Frontier, what ever happened to...

Cassette tapes??? What cave were you living in? 5.25" Floppies were much faster.
Caves???What sumptuous dwellings.! Ah yes,the lovelace/babbage binary digital signage system never really did catch on,but my goodness was it swift...E-peen even then.

Interesting.

I'm missing a lot of context when reading this, also when reading the initial Splitting the user base issue thread. It's as if players/voters weren't fully aware of the existence of modes back then, even if Sandro makes it clear in one of the later posts that there will be private groups and inadvertently there will be player segregation.

Wasn't it obvious to the voters at that time that, like it or not, you would end up with stuff like Mobius anyway, with tens of thousands of players being apart, never being able willing to meet each other in-game?

This poll was a bit over a month before the Player Groups DDF topic was opened.

This summary post is a handy way to look at the development of DDF topics: http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=431507#post431507

First they need to give us multiple save slots per account. Iron man mode isn’t workable if you only get one CMDR profile per purchase. Fortunately FDev also PROMISED (yes promised as in they are liars if they don’t do it) multiple save slots per account. So whenever they decide to start behaving honestly they can add both features into the game and it will contribute to the value of Elite immensely.

Where did they promise this ?

I don't have an original promise, but it was certainly the understanding to kickstarters (with offline and all) we'd be able to play with many positions... and I'm sure there were DDF discussions along the lines of having multiple saves.
Heck I backed to a level that I have half-a-dozen or so different scenarios to begin the game with, but never have been able to try them because I hadn't wanted to wipe my beta commander and start over. Yeah, I waited for slots to be implemented - but when the first year ticked by had resigned myself to playing a "do it all" slot & advancing with both Fed + Imperial military to unlock the ships... totally against the previous 2 Elite/Frontier games and how I'd wanted to play. :(

But here's when upset about the Founders of the Elite benefits not being implemented spilled over into the main forum and MB answered. Multiple save slots not being implemented was one of the other questions from the plucky KS pitchfork wavers.

In spite of the assurances, nothing really changed. (The private KS sub-forum was abandoned by devs even before launch and remains so).
Yes we did get the golden decal in 1.3 after further upset and argument - only then for FD to delete the few Elite/Founder missions in the move to a new mission system - but they won't even discuss if they'll add them back in spite of being asked for 2-3 years now. So much for the Rare + special missions we paid £50 extra for in KS to get access to - they aren't ever going to happen are they.

I really hoped that the Beyond season might have remembered some of us original backers and the promises that were made to us.
I guess we just don't matter that much any more.

I feel you bro. I remember waiting for this game for 15 years. Backing it in KS. Believing in it. Tonight I was told I don't matter because I'm in the "minority" due to my playstyle. I'm not one of 10000 players going on distant world's expedition. I always look back on beta, gamma and PvP which went on before each save reset. Dozens of Cmdrs in s/c, lots of advice, lessons, victories, defeats but no salt, no combat logging, no cheating. I am amazed at how FD have managed to polarise the community through poor design decisions and broken promises. It has become a toxic dump. I even tried open PvP piracy in my Cobra tonight. Haha what a waste of time. Caught between the anvil (combat loggers) and the hammer (seal clubbers). Role play didnt help. Perseverance didn't help. Reverberating torpedoes did when they eventually arrived after 40min "imerssion" timer. The seal clubbers then disappeared but so did the traders. I was left alone in empty s/c to ponder what did I do wrong and why I am trying so hard to play this game which clearly does not want me... And then I remembered ... I backed it because I wanted to be an "honourable" rogue/pirate in a Cobra MkIII.

That does sound like a promise to me. I understand if someone says that the DDF was just a place to pitch or present ideas and that nothing there was set in stone, but when the game director makes a statement on the forum to a specific issue, I take that as commitment from the company.

Then there are all the things said in livestreams, diaries and all the other PLEASE-BUY-OUR-GAME videos prior to launch. I won't go looking for the needle in the haystack to see if commander slots have been asked for and/or confirmed on some livestream, but people need to understand that if a potential customer asks about something like this and receives a positive answer, then that answer influences his purchase decision and probably the decision of many other people watching that material.

There is a point where you can no longer simply say "this does not constitute a promise" or "no ETA, no guarantees" and then go on talking about magic space unicorns for an hour. Of course, there is absolutely no legally binding agreement there, but I do reserve the right to call the promiser a liar, when the same magic space unicorns are nowhere to be seen 4 years down the line.

I wasn't part of the Kickstarter, didn't pay much attention to the tiered pledges, but reading now... wow, I wasn't even aware there was so much different stuff which was supposed to be in the game. Did people get their naming rights at least?

That is correct. And topics like these are why game studios in general dont like to try any real discussions because every fart is taken as a promise.

it's quite easy really, if a form of words like 'we will be' is used, then you can reasonably expect the developer to implement, or at least give some explanation why not.

If a form of words like 'we're considering' is used, don't hold your breath.

Using feedback from a feedback forum as a reason not to respond to your player base isn't very logical.

The DDA has loads of stuff in it yet to come, shame we don't get the updates we used to get.
All communication seems to have dropped off since Michael B and Sandro S have moved to other projects.

Which is why I thought I'd ask about Ironman.
Be nice to know it still is planned to be added at some point.

indeed and i think this is where some of the glass half full people get the wrong idea about the complaints from the glass half empty folk. IF i picked ED up now and played it for what it is i am sure i would be blown away and have little bad to say. IMO the game is pretty good!.

however it isnt really that close to the game which many early backers bought into and paid a relatively large amount of money for. The game outlined in kickstarter etc etc i was more than happy to pay £150ish for..... the game we have now i would be more than happy to pay money for esp considering how cheap it is when on sale (£10 for complete edition a few weeks back), but not as much as I did as it is missing too much content which i look for in a game and focuses too much on stuff i am not bothered about.

PS i may be showing my age here but every time i see the thread title The Likely Lads! pops into my head!

You aren't alone, I can assure you.

Well I didn't want to put just "Where is Ironman" or something so clear, as it gives them the opportunity to scroll right on by because they know what the thread is about.

So I decided to try the "click bait" method, and see if at any point the "Users in thread" at the bottom of the page would show a Frontier person reading the thread.

It never occurred to me until it was pointed out I'd gone and referenced something.
Shame I didn't accidentally reference http://eu.ironman.com/

:D

I wasn't here back then. If I had this option, including to only be matched with fellow Ironman players, I would click yes within a heartbeat.

I was here back then, and I was (and still am) really hoping for an Ironman mode myself. Since I primarily play in Open, I'm not a fan of playing Ironman when antagonistic players are not doing the same, so as a compromise, I'm playing with the Pilot's Ejection Table.
