Frontiers Financial Report is Out 👀

No and yes, FY ends on the 31st of May
Off topic but 1 July is the date for all new legislative and superannuation material to be published and up to date in regards to the financial year in Australia. It is an annual design nightmare for me.

Welp, Frontier's full report is out. I'm still reading it. I don't think it gives us any new hints or clues.

Quotes about PZ:

-"The future for Planet Zoo is bright with its ever-growing community of players supported by our strategy of free and paid content." (They always say this every year so I'm sure they plan to end support at the end of this year)

Wow, Frontier increased its workforce by 251 to 919 in just one financial year, clearly they will cut PZ support now to focus on new projects because they have such a pressing need to redeploy resources to new projects to make a better return.

No jokes. PZ has dropped to 5th on the OUR GAMES index, it was 3rd last year behind F1 and JWE2. Now two Warhammer games are ahead of it, which is to say PZ ranks 5th on Frontier's list of priorities. Not great.

"The release of F1® Manager 2023 in July 2023 has so far not delivered the expected sales contribution" The F1 franchise may be in some trouble.

Frontier's CEO chapter titled "Getting Back on Track". Pretty much summarises the current state right now. It's very philosophical, basically Frontier plans to focus on CMS and "adjacent games" similar to that and pick underserved markets where they can be genre leading. Games will have "non-linear emergent gameplay" with "player-led narratives" providing "rewarding playstyles" and "player agency", "easy to pick up difficult to master", similar to PZ. They are definitely trying to find a similar new game. They actually say they prefer picking titles where they already have core expertise and ip, so maybe an indication for PC2.

"After nearly 10 years since its first public beta, we have greatly exceeded the original vision for the game." I'm guessing Elite support is about to end. Planet Zoo hasn't quite reached this stage yet.

"For some of our development teams that means growth in terms of both headcount and capability, and over time we will look to increase the number of our development teams in order to grow the number of projects that we can support at any one time." PZ support to increase + better chance they decide to continue support?

I bet one day before someone else says it isn't proof that support is continuing
Why do we have to do this everytime

SOOOoooo, the strategic report has been published. Unfortunately it doesn't reveal any more than we already know:

"Jurassic World Evolution 2 and
Planet Zoo performed especially well, each supported by four new PDLC packs releasing in FY23, alongside free content. In FY24 new PDLC packs and free content for both Jurassic World Evolution 2 and Planet Zoo have already been released, with more planned during this financial year."

However it does also say:
"The future for Planet Zoo is bright with its ever-growing community of players supported by our strategy of free and paid content."

So, the future looks bright for Frontier, but to us it's pretty opaque! Nothing concrete to be gleaned from this sadly but very positive that PZ is one of their top two performers and that their strategy is to nurture their creative sim games.

Oooooohhh Thanks, I love them nice graphics and spreadsheets. Gimme gimme. Although nothing really new, it's the same data just more beautiful.

Financial years are not the same for everyone worldwide.

Frontier’s FY is June 1-May 31.

On another note, it’s important to know that in video game businesses, sales alone don’t inherently, necessarily mean guaranteed continued content adding support. Sure, it can help, but what’s most important, which includes contributing to those high sales, is overall player engagement with the respective game, until or unless something terrible happens or if a planned/agreed deadline is approached. If a game has excellent sales but very low engagement than satisfactory for them, then it may stop, because there’s no justification revenue.
