Frustrated with pirate AI, fear mechanics broken?

There is no honor among thieves, or the police, or the government, oh wait they are all thief's.. My only question is this...

...the police reinforcements came endlessly, including an ANACONDA. The system doesn't even have a bloody starport, only an outpost, and where would they even get that sort of firepower!?

EDIT: Alright, I was a slight bit overzeaous, it's fine for pirates to attack each other, but if you read through the thread you'll find the problem with my encounter.

Heehee, last time I looked, most Anaconda class vessels mount a jump drive.

I've been doing RES bounty hunting for a while now, to the point I've reached Elite combat rank so I've killed a lot of pirates. The 1.3 update may have given the NPCs the ability to radio "Woah there big guy, I wasn't doing nothing" after they scan but it's still very rare. Countless pirate Eagles have plinked at my Python with their tiny multiguns or flashlights or whatever it is they're armed with in the hopes of taking my 8 tons of bait-gold.

Pirates aren't sane. Unless I fell asleep for an hour there's no way that an Eagle would beat a combat Python, especially with an Elite combat rank.

Was the hauler clean? Usually when they're mining, in a wing with a couple of escorts, the miner ship is non-hostile.
Or, one of the police scanned you, saw the bounty and began to open fire; returning fire probably just makes them spawn faster.

Yeah, Conda's have jump drives, but the system's government has no other controlled starports.

I saw the Adder (not hauler) killed it's 2 sidewinder buddies, and shot it until it dropped 6t of palladium. Then a cop came by which was promptly killed, then that pirate onslaught/meat grinder, then cop onslaught/me grinder.

Maybe it's their value of cargo. 8t of gold might have attracted that pirate, although he should've simply been cursing to himself. "Why can't I have a cargo like that", or "Where'd you get that cargo!?" are my suggestions as to what he should say :)

Limiting what police can use based on the largest spaceport they have would be a good improvement.

On the other hand, maybe they have planetary bases?

The only planets are gas giants. Besides, what is a population of 2,300 people doing with dozens of fighters and 2 Anacondas? Even if they had the money, isn't that overkill?

Since the latest patch (1.3.07?), I'm being interdicted by harder and harder ships; I'm in a trader Anaconda, but still fairly well armed. I'm running 4A shields though, 860MJ or thereabouts strength.
Yesterday I ended up being interdicted by a Deadly Anaconda with 5 turretted beams... I took him out but at about 50% of his powerplant destroyed, his wingmate dropped in - a second deadly Anaconda with multicannon and pulse. Yikes! I popped the first 'conda and fled boost after boost with dropped shields and escaped to SC with 77% hull. 80K repair bill, ouch.

So before 1.3 I was getting interdicted by silly Sidewinders, Cobra's, hardly anything larger than a Cobra. And they were toast in seconds.
Now its Pythons, Clippers and Anaconda's bailing me up for my cargo.

At least in the SC arena, the smaller ships leave me alone.

My bet is SJA will have some simple/quick ranking system in play for the 'fear mechanic' based on your ship type, bounty, combat rating, shield/hull strength and cargo value. Simple metrics to compare against a table of actions. Its probably already completed at the spawn time, so any ship that heads your way in a RES has hostile intent (as it was before 1.3).

Perhaps I should drop a chaff launcher and mount a KWS.

Ooh, nice. Are you trading in low security systems? I may take up trading if this continues.

All I got for the double Anaconda encounter was 200cr when he opened fire first. I didn't kill the second one.
The two 'conda's were aligned to a different power (Antal iirc), so not really after my cargo of palladium per se. I was a PP target for the NPC's, although my cargo would have jumped me up the ranks I suspect.

I'm pledged to Hudson; I think security is lowered in the systems I'm trading in due to them being independent but no civil war states etc.
No I'm not telling you where I am (although I am in Open) :D

If you do find me I'll drop enough to fill your hold (I had to stop myself from saying 'fill your Asp'!)

:) I could never attack a CMDR's Anaconda in my ASP. I was sweating when I did it in my Imperial Clipper! :D

I sold the ASP and am flying a T7 around the old worlds hauling regular cargo. Quite fun! Just wish there were more CMDRs.
