GALNET - Prototype Frame Shift Drive almost production ready, competitor sceptical - 04 APR 3310

I mean from the update log they already have noise problems. I'm not gonna be first in line to try Achilles shoddy tech. It right there in the name Achilles doesn't scream quality.

Super Cruise Overcharge:
  • New Rating C Frame Shift Drive modules will be available. They can be found at a number of Outfitting services, especially in more technologically advanced markets, and these will introduce a new functionality: Super Cruise Overcharge.
    • Known Issue: SCO audio is missing from some ships

Since they recently changed the UI from displaying "slow down" to "gravity well" after so many years, I wonder if it will be related to overcharging.
I looked at some footage of the old Stargoids since I never got the chance to see them myself and it seems they never slowed down much when moving through systems. I'm betting if there's any passive effects on the flight model, it's that ships running the new FSDs could be able to retain more momentum when travelling at high speeds through gravity wells which could serve well when trying to move through denser shipping lanes.

I'm guessing it'll be pretty simple. It'll be basically a supercruise version of boost, dramatically increasing your handling and speed for a short period of time. The main utility being getting out of deep gravity Wells more rapidly. I highly doubt this will have much effect on really long trips, like going to Hutton orbital, as there will be far too much gravity to fight, but it will probably reduce the travel time by 10 to 20%. Where it will really have an impact is on shorter jaunts, where you spend most of your time deep in the gravity well.

Presumably, this will also have impacts on thargoid interdictions, increasing your handling enough to actually fight them.

I don't know, any pilot knows that if you are intercepted by someone you should immediately surrender to avoid engine cool down.
In other words, the mechanics of the intercept game just don't work.
Interdictions by Thargoids or players are difficult/impossible to beat interdictions by NPCs can be beaten regularly if you have learned the tricks and/or have the right ship.
So the mechanics work for the majority of interdiction encounters we meet.

Shame it's not a module that augments your FSD like the Guardian FSD Booster. Don't think i will be giving up my jump range for some extra supercruise speed.

I’m intrigued but also slightly confused … why add a new FSD type?

I mean, if it’s significantly better than current FSDs, great … but still, why?

Or if it’s a niche side-grade …

Or if it’s going to be limited to only new ships …

Why?

Or, maybe … why now?

There has to be more going on here …

Well the much less straw clutching than usual reading of the update message has by many been taken to indicate that the main difference will be in supercruise rather than jumping and that it will possibly work like the boost button in normal space letting you get away from things trying to wrench you out of cruise.

Just sounds like faster supercruise, which was a common complaint, so I'll be interested to see how it works and how it could potentially effect other things... whichever way it goes.

Another thought occurs to me that this may not be faster supercruise, but a way to do in-system jumps to a secondary star, the overcharge wording and mentions of sounds seems to indicate it's a short term thing like a thruster boost, so just an overcharged extremely fast SC jump to the local stars, will make Hutton trips really short!

I don't think they'll do that. That would likely
upset a fair few.
But sure, let's see what comes...

Actually this might have been. Super-cruise is a player invented concept that occurred during development feedback. FD liked it because it add something to the original concept and would showcase the Stella forge more (orbital bodies in motion etc).

Beforec Super-cruise, FD original concept was in-system mini-jumps. Where players would need to think about navigation.

*sadly it just seems to make you go really fast… shame.
