Game audio that sticks with you

Few would argue that the audio in Elite Dangerous is absolutely top drawer . Everything about it from the music to the engines to the weapons I would say is exceptional.

But for me when talking elite franchise the sound effects which take me right back to being a 12 year old playing in my bedroom on a 14 inch tv (playing instead of doing homework) is from Elite on the amiga..... For some reason it is the sound of the fuel scoop as well as the ECM. Those 2 simple sound effects I doubt I will ever forget and will be able to ID as I go to my grave .
Other ones that stuck is the slightly spooky sound of the wind blowing around your landing pad when on an atmospheric planet in Frontier .

I also wonder how many kids had their 1st into to classical music with elite and the blue Danube.

It is no doubt elite games have left a lasting mark for me more than any other game.

(I admit I am bored baby sitting on a sat morning ;) )

My fave sounds: an anaconda's engines as they roar past your ship, and that creepy piano music when you're driving around on planets.

I loved the hyperjump sound from FE2, and every time I hear golden gates of Kiev I get goose bumps as I associate that piece of music with promotions/rewards in FE2.

For E.D - Sound of an imperial hammer firing, the supercruise suite of the OST, and the throaty metallic sound of a Cobra mkIII.

An honourable mention would also go to the sounds of thargoid probes/sensors etc, as the sounds are fantastic and utterly alien, as intended, but they are just too alien to stay in mind or be associated with real life things.

The ECM from FE2 (“WibWobWibWobWibWobWib”) and the opening music / cinematic, ooh yuss!

Not much from the original Elite, the Electron didn’t have a whole lot of the rich kid’s version :)

ED is just ace sounding the whole time - though one standout moment was during the SRV planetary circumnavigation; I’d stopped to watch the sun rise and as light flooded across the landscape and shadows raced past me, the plinky-plonk piano mood music kicked in. It couldn’t have been timed better. Proper awesome VR moment.

From the original game I enjoyed / feared the honk when you were jumping to the station, knowing it was an imminent pirate attack and you had a cobra full of computers. Also the crunch noise when the pulse laser made contact with the hull of an enemy, it sounded really juicy!

In the current game I'm visiting a lot of surface geological sites to collect mats and the piano piece that comes in perfectly fits the creepyness and solitude of the planet surface.
The music and sound design of this game is excellent.

It's nice, but only yesterday I found myself wondering just how the positional audio is set up - never paid any mind to it before:

I am a VR user, and swung by the Golconda, to check out the audio logs.
...so I glided past one of the rotating section hubs, and this is where I got this jarring experience, of the howling noise from the hub muting entirely, if I faced away from it; Turn my head in its direction: Really loud; Turn back just a few degrees: Complete silence. Maybe that's how the (game lore) ship's simulated audio for things outside is supposed to work, but it felt really wrong. :7

(Didn't help that it came seconds after my wondering why the tower inside the dome I flew past was clipping through it, and why all the soil and vegetation on its floor isn't flung out to the ceiling, considering the structures face outward... :p (EDIT: ...or maybe they weren't rotating... don't recall now - need to pay better attention :7.))

So much to choose from. The noise from the engines as an FDL decelerates, the music that plays when you're driving around in an SRV, Thargoid sounds etc, etc.

I've been back in my Courier for the first time in a while and I love how the sound levels really help the 'space go kart' feel.

My first foray into elite was actually FE2 on Amiga.

The inbound missile warning is what sticks with me... coz unless you had a cobra iii or bigger, or had shields up (good luck with anything smaller than an asp), or the right ECM , that was your death knell.

Sadly missiles in elite are just party poppers.

The crackle as your canopy ices in the cloud of a VO core is one of my favourite sounds. Not because it means $$$, it's just an amazing effect along with the visuals.
Others - the deceleration of my Corvette; the chatter of Med multiguns on the Cobra.
One really great sound is the subtle rush and creaking of your ship in Glide as you descend towards a planet - marvelous!

The Thargoid sounds are a bit too "Hey, let's be aliens!" for my taste; it actually takes away from the creepiness, IMO but that's a small niggle in an absolutely gorgeous soundset.

Cheers!
