Game freezing spontaneously from anywhere upto 20 seconds at a time?

i don't know if this is relevant to anyone else but I noticed tonight that my game freezes are only happening when i have EDMarketConector running.
I did some testing and it only happens when it is running if anyone else would like to test this out I would be interested in there results.

Cmdr Praematurus

I get freezes with EDDiscovery (always running when I play). Could still be related but it's not EDMC specific.

The truth is: there are no freezes, what you experience is just that you cannot remember what happens during these 20-120 seconds. The Thargoids know. And TJ.

I'm getting the freeze/pause every so often. Doesn't matter if I'm running anything else. The time varies, up to 20-30 secs and frequency is about 15-20 mins.

I get the same time but the frequency is much less at about once an hour.

The game music and SoundFX continue even though the screen freezes, and last night it happened whilst in the Galaxy Map which was a first for me.

i think this is a video driver issue. I have an nvidia gtx 1070 and when I check my windows errror log, I keep seeing video driver recovered from an error.

This is definitely a video driver issue, when i freeze, and it's getting more frequent, the 1080 fan throttles down to nothing whilst it decides if its going to come back to life.

This doesn't imply a video driver issue, as GPU and CPU load falling to near zero are symptomatic of the freeze. If the card isn't loaded, it's not producing much heat, and the fan will spin down.

Doesn't rule out a driver issue, but as I've seen it happen across about six releases of NVIDIA drivers and other people have experienced it on consoles that don't run Windows or any NVIDIA hardware, it seems unlikely.

so i was mining void opals, i had about 80tons in cargo, when suddenly game froze for about 50 seconds, when it started again, i get eject eject eject, boom, i dont even know why i died, i was just sitting there not near any asteroids, so not sure what killed me, lost 6 mil insurance or something, but no biggy will be a few hours work, im just sooo glad i didnt have my npc pilot with me, because permadeath... will simply not be using crew until this is sorted, its not worth the risk.

Really fail to see how this is a video driver issue, unless every graphics card has suddenly decided to 'freeze' Elite Dangerous and no other game across hundreds of computers and platforms (Even PS4 users have reported this issue) not only is it across different platforms but also people who do not have Nvidia hardware. If you were to email Nvidia support to say that your graphics card was faulty because, after a major game update, a game keeps freezing I know what the answer would be. Remember that this issue only started AFTER the update and will not be sorted out until FDev return to work in January.

i have this happen in many games and other things. if something is full screen, sometimes windows 10 or something else will just seem to grab priority or something. ctrl alt del will bring up the blue screen but then i click for task manager it will open in the task view window you can see it but you cant switch it to front and if you do manage to its blank. nothing but a blank window. sometimes if i open another desktop the system will wake up again, and depending on what game it is i have been logged out or it crashes to desktop (skyrim CTD on those occasions more often that it recovers.)

so are you sure its the game (if on pc)? it might just be whatever it is windows is doing in secret when it seems to freeze everything. what confuses me is, it is definitely windows because you cant open anything else even task manager; nor can you alt tab to anything and have it come to the front, but its not using up the cpu or something - you can still open a second desktop for example almost instantly. its like windows 10 just freezes all programs running for no reason.

I think you can rest easy with the Win 10 question, this issue is affecting all platforms (PS4, PC )and pc's with different o/s (Win 7, Win8, Win 8.1, Win 10) and different graphics card manufacturers, also the reported instantaneous 'freeze' on different systems at exactly the same second and 'unfreeze' as well does not point to an Operating system error but to a server side issue that, as yet, has not been resolved because they are on holiday. It is strange how after an update everyone jumps on the 'update your graphics card/update Windows' bandwagon then when a patch is released the problem is resolved without the user doing anything to their system. Windows 10 just freezes all programs running for no reason, hardly it's more than likely that the server you are connected to has frozen and taken the game code on your system with it so that even the keyboard will not respond until the server resets.

Bad use of "driver" on my part, i was meaning implementation within the game engine, not card specific drivers.

graphics cards aren't freezing ED, there is a bug in ED which is causing the bug across drivers, and since it is probably a D3D error and all GFX cards use D3D, then it affects all cards. Because all cards use the same inherent software based on DirectX. It's like saying you can't believe a million compuiters could be affected by a bug, but all those computers are running windows. This is ED's error and it is causing video drivers to act up.

And I never said it was nvidias fault, I just said which card I had. I know it's not a card issue, it is a coding bug causing the fault in all our drivers. Not the drivers fault either, so it really ISNT a driver issue, but it's related to that interface between the game and the drawing.

No it's a timing issue on the EliteDangerous64.exe thread on the CPU, if you attach the debugger to the thread you can see it's waiting on a response, as to which response I can not see that as I do not know FD's code, but it looks likes it's related to the comms server.

The next frontier (pun incidental) of spyware/censorship...games that have to phone home to ask for permission to draw the next frame!

I don't think its a GPU issue. For one, I don't have any driver error in my event-log, and I get a freeze maybe every two or three hours.
The GPU throttling down during the freeze is most likly a secondary effect. The game freezes, the GPU has nothing left to do.

The client is probably waiting to sync for the server tick.

Sometimes when you are jumping, the transition takes a few seconds more than usually, in these cases the countdown often starts a few seconds in. For me this suggests that client and server need to sync and that could be related to the freezes.

Played most of today (31st) and up to 9pm and not one lock up. Maybe FD are fiddling with knobs and pulling levers behind the scenes. Hoping so.

According to steam charts there are currently 25% less players than at the 24 hours peak. It's probably just less server load.
