Game loses something by not forcing Open play

Getting in on an epic thread.

Solo/Group players are all akin to thinking, "OMG the sky is falling! Let's hide under this rock and we'll be safe!" when in fact there is no sky.

Given the scale of the Galaxy, and as evidenced by my own experience in Gamma, you'd thank the stars to even see another player once you get out there. I haven't seen a living breathing CMDR since the first hour of Gamma. I dare say the majority of players hiding in Solo/Group have never ever been killed or even shot at by another player. What are you all so afraid of? And of all things, afraid for your virtual pixels in a bleedin game, I wonder what you all are like IRL. The same old boring, safe, and insulated 9 to 5'ers?

This... unfortunately vast majority of players appear to be some kind of hermits that want to only play solo (which I am fine with)... but at the same time are strongly opposed to have separated worlds of solo and online so that you cannot jump between them with the same ship/location/etc. Hypocrisy much? This is what I really don't understand.

Awwwwww damn. I thought it might have been something interesting (like leopard replying with his list of concerns). Turns out it was just a common Troll. The Troll does have a point though. There is basically no difference between grinding for a ship in Solo and grinding for a ship in Open away from the nearest human player. So that blows one commonly held misconception right out of the water for a start.

I had a post yesterday asking why use open play, and it turns out the only reason is to gank or be ganked.

But the fact you can advance in the game running solo only, imho, really makes the game lose something.

A lot of the fun of Eve is the fact that the risk is always there, and the level of risk is reflected in the level of reward.

But in ED, you can go do everything with no risk. (Interdiction by NPC's isn't a risk, its easy to avoid).

I really wish you could only advance in Open play, or that Open money/ships/reputation were separate from Solo money/ships/reputation.

Yes, I know some don't want to have to deal with other players, great, there is a solo mode.

But the fact that solo and open are tied together means you can play in complete safety, get your uber ship, then jump into open.

Really feels like the game is losing some of its potential by having a 100% safe mode.

That's your opinion to which you are entitled. However there are many gamers who don't like to play in Open PvP environments. Why should the game ignore them. The people playing Solo are not hurting the Open players in any way. You act as if there is some competition going on here. You are only competing against yourself. There is no set goal or ultimate challenge to be overcome before the other guy. You are just being silly.

Just because you have seen few people does not mean everyone else is the same - quite a few other threads on these forums people talk about how many folks they see. So it must be where you have decided to play you don't see anyone as other found some very busy systems.

I dare say the majority of players hiding in Solo/Group have never ever been killed or even shot at by another player.

Well, d'uh - Solo you are on your own and group play you share with those you trust not to be morons to you.

What are you all so afraid of? And of all things, afraid for your virtual pixels in a bleedin game, I wonder what you all are like IRL. The same old boring, safe, and insulated 9 to 5'ers?

So nothing to actually add, just stroking your own ego by insulting others. If it's just "a bleedin game" why are you getting so worked up then insulting people?

I think you need to read up on what "hypocrisy" means.

Wanting to jump in/out of open when *I choose* and being forced in to it *because you say so* are 2 different things there matey ;)

Solo/group players who don't want to see other players are irrelevant to the conversation. This is about those who do want to play in open, but also have the solo option (with the same commander). Our motivations are entirely different.

That you don't understand is obvious, but it is not the fault of those you falsely accuse of hypocrisy.

I think the problem is most people consider players being "Dangerous" to other players griefing :-/ Like players shouldn't be allowed to Pirate CMDRs or something. I'm starting to think this was almost meant to be a single player game for the classic fans while the "Multiplayer" tag is just used loosely to attract new players.

I kinda agree that Open and Solo being interchangeably does hurt certain facets of the game. I have a feeling all that's going to happen is Elite will be split up into two communities. Elite: Space Truckers and Elite: Griefer. I think having ONLY Open play would force things to balance better. Perhaps making a separate CMDR for each mode would be a compromise.

How would it force things to balance? Truckers are gonna truck, griefers are gonna grief and potatoes are gonna potate!

Solo / Online all makes no difference in this regard, I'm flying around in my asp system to system, trucking and not seeing anybody, stations I stop at have not seen another player in 24 hours... you would think I am in solo mode at this point. Of course, when I fly back to somewhere like Sol and see players... it might feel like I have swapped from solo to online, except.. I didn't!

It's not a compromise, what you are describing is appeasement.
Compromise is when something is changed to the advantage of both sides. But that's not what this is about, it's obvious.

Appeasement is where one faction/group forces a change that is only an advantage for the side requesting the change, and says "see it's not that bad, we could have demanded more". .

It's about restricting Solo and Open mode play options, That's all it seems to be about is Building a 10-ft tall barbed wire Fence. But it won't stop there, then next they complain "everyone still hiding in Solo mode I have no targets to shoot", so then they'll get on the forums and complain that Solo mode needs to be Nerfed (slower progress etc) to "encourage" people to start in Open mode and be locked-in to their online fight-fest in space.

You cannot Appease (satisfy) an argument by continuing to give and give and give until Solo is completey eliminated from the game, that's how a faction wins over the long-term is by taking little by little until they have all they want.

A lot of people playing solo only, may have chosen that path after bad experiences in early PB before security forces turned up. Half the players were bored and liked nothing better to camp out in safe systems and prey on any other player that crossed their path.

Currently much depends on where you start out and where you venture out to. I have only seen two other players in the past week or so. Saw someone must have been here because at least one other person is currently using and uploading Slopeys BPC trading tool in my area.

I am sticking to open till I have reason to go solo, but I don't really care about MP other than it's interesting to see others off doing their own business. I don't have much interest in actually interacting with them, I typically only talk to people I already know.

Quite the reverse, actually. Separating open and solo will mean anyone who's not "all in" for open only will play solo only. As I said a few pages back, restricting which commanders are allowed into open is not a good way to get more commanders in open.

All the snide remarks aside, FWIW I think FDev is just playing us all, different modes to appeal to everyone. If they could have surmounted the "problems" with providing an "offline" mode, they would have had their cake and ate it all. A version to sell to and satisfy every single person.

As it is, I am disappointed that FDev did not make ED just one Open mode for everyone. The options are still all there in one mode. If you want to play alone you have 400 Billion stars to hide in, if you want to play pew pew you can congregate in wherever the action is. None of this Solo, Group, Open now splitting the player base.

Probably true. In my case I am curious enough to quite like seeing others going about their business. But if I had to choose one or the other I'd go solo. I do play games like War Thunder, but not socially, I rarely chat outside of the forums. MMO's tend to have simple controls and boring mechanics that don't suit me.

That's exactly how...you force them to play together...

Carebears + Griefers = Balanced well rounded game ;D

I don't know, I just have this fear that being a really good Pirate will just help Open play die off into bascially solo mode anyway. I'd prefear to have super deep emergent gameplay with Traders/Explorers verses Pirates and Bounty hunters to save the day. I don't what to see all the Pirates to scare away all the prey, and Open play is just left with Pirates fighting each other.

Yeah your are probably right about that...Open only then ;D

Allow me to add something to this comment - whilst you perceive it as "splitting the player base" the fact remains it was split to begin with. There are a number of players who will only play solo/group; and a number of people who given the either/or choice would also play solo/group if they had to choose. A Dev commented some time back that allowing the shift from solo/group to open and back again could tempt people into the open to try it out. That, in my book, is a good thing.

Oh but thats the thing... they don't want 'safe solo players' in online mode, not that it makes any difference where the credits came from lol.
I would rather people decide to give it a go and be able to without starting a new game than not bother at all. But, some don't see it like that.

no, the Solo/group/Open was in the game since Beta even when they still promised an Offline mode, the mode groups were always part of the game. Not a recent change.

None of this Solo, Group, Open now splitting the player base.
The way I see it we are not split by any large gap now, since everyone can freely join Open at any time.
But the irony of this thread is that By asking to seperate Cmdr's from Solo/Group/Open, such people are even-furthur going to split and fragment the community, and then then will cry even harder that their radar shows no other CMDR's.

You missed my point. I am playing online all, not solo. I don't see ANYBODY! therefore the only way to force people to play together is create a PVP bubble surrounding 20 systems similar to the beta bubble. When I return from solitude (online all) how is that any different to somebody coming from solo to online all? Answer.. its NOT!

Your fear is unfounded so let me put it to rest.

The galaxy is huge - in effect this game will be a PvE game (mainly) with the odd PvP here and there due to the fact that there are so many systems and players will naturally spread out. It should also be noted that many of the starting positions are random. Yes, the PvP players will naturally congregate around a set of systems to duke it out, but the chances of meeting someone outside of this group is slim.

On the whole a typical player will be pirating NPCs and occasionally meeting another player.

You have nothing to loose going into open :)

If the game had been marketed as "Open play only" - it would never have gotten through the Kickstarter - because the original Elite was a Solo only game and the people who put in to the KS wanted an updated Elite.

So anyone asking for forced open play is basically insulting those who got the game off the ground to start with, to be quite frank about it.

As for the whole "400 Billion star systems" - that does not stop someone finding you, it does not stop someone ganking you so it is not a defence for trying to force open play on people. My first time in open play I almost got killed by the station I left killing ANOTHER HUMAN PLAYER... 400 Billion systems and they just had to annoy the station I was docked at and I all most got it in the crossfire. So no, your whole *space is big* excuse wont wash with me or another person who within 5 minutes of being in open got ganked (spoke up earlier in this thread).

The only way the player base is splitting is by people trying to force others in to being their play toys in open - I'm not here for anyone elses amusement, you pay me £15 per hour and I'll fly around in open all day long for you, until then, it's my time to do with as I want - so I will jump in solo or open as I see fit in my own time.
