Planetary landings but no picnic...as you will not be able to get out your ship. Still if I could fly down to a newly discovered ELW that would be better than a pork pie and a pint of Adnams.

Playstation 4 port. And everything else "soon" according to the not-public internal ten-year roadmap.

Oh, and new "maps" for 1.4 Capture the Flag every month, each with extra power-ups.

Even on the "in station" exploration there are lots of possibilities. I spend as much time on the forums here as playing the game, it'd be great to be able to go into a station and interact "in game". Go into a pilot's briefing room and bring up (Youtube) gameplay videos on a big screen. Or perhaps consoles where you can view more detailed exploration data (explorer's heatmaps maybe?). If they wanted to be really clever, allow 3rd party plugins, such as trading tools / EDShipyard or Coriolis to be viewed through in-station consoles. Likely? probably not, but there are lots of options out there.

Interesting! If dog fighting in an atmosphere and around ground targets adds variety.. great! But it would be hard to see this before landings?

It has to be the other way around, surely? They have to implement atmospheric entry before (or at the same time as) planetary landings. I'm a little worried as I heard comments previously that planetary landings would be easy - that makes me think they'll go for something basic like higher-resolution planet textures and stations/outposts on the surface. I want varied, dramatic terrain that provides a cool backdrop to combat. That also provides places to run and hide, or ambush. That give a real sense of speed, which you don't get in space with nothing for reference.

I fail to see what this adds except a glorified station really.

Surface-side stations could provide some variety, both visually and in terms of landing/takeoff (mountains etc. which need to be avoided on approach). I do agree there would be nothing ground-breaking in just adding station on the surface, apart from the visuals/setting. But it would have to be done if you want to add surface exploration afterwards.

Again, what would you do? There would need to be insanely complex coding to allow for missions to go and do things.

I agree, it would require a huge amount to be added to the game. Considering the existing missions are little more than collect/deliver/kill, they could implement similar missions but for surface vehicles, without needing to start into an FPS module. I played a game before called Dropship in which you flew fighters and larger craft, but could land and deploy armoured vehicles which then could explore the surface. Lots of fun, and it really gives you a sense of scale which you miss if you're just zooming about in the air.

I hope they're not going to throw aliens in already. The game has plenty of other things to improve first!

Maybe so, but they're not mutually exclusive. I think FD need to add "marquee" features in addition to tweaks and bug-fixes to prevent the game from getting stale. Since they don't have a subscription model, they're going to have to bring in money another way too, so they need something big for the paid DLC.

Not sure what the leaves in the speculated upcoming features: Thargoids? (please no) Planetary landings?

Thargoids - long way off also. So it could be Phase 1 of Planetary Landings (planets without atmosphere), or (if it is not an expansion announcement) ship crew, passenger missions with improvements for mission system, persistent NPCs, tier 2 NPCs. Or maybe big fleet fights with more than one Capital ship (like in the last trailer), more politics, territory conflicts, etc. I don't know what else could be "It’s something we’ve be building to for a long time and something we can’t wait to reveal." Lots of new ships, maybe... or something completely new that we didn't see in DDF/KS/else.

I still think - an expansion announcement, but if not FPS, then Planetary Landing.

Well, I dunno - landing and walking around were among the most tedious and boring parts of X: Rebirth; what used to be a menu you could race through with a few keypresses was turned into a multi-minute slog through uninteresting samey stations with ugly NPCs and no interesting interaction to speak of... :(

I'd rather pass on those, honestly...

It won't be planetary landings.

Just saying - it would be ridiculous to launch that feature as a part of tbe update titled "close quarters combat".

It's going to be something smaller scale than CQC, otherwise it makes no sense for CQC to be the title of the update.

There are still a lot of cool smaller scale things to be added.

It's definitely not FPS as confirmed by FDev.

The surprise feature is an announcement, not a launch, and not part of 1.4, aka CQC.

Don't mix it up. 1.4 is NOT Gamescon reveal. It's big and long in development.

It is expansion most likely.

The 1.4 update is not the big Gamescon announcement, as confirmed by FDev.

What I think they will unveil is landing on rocky airless moons.

What I hope they announce in addition to that:

2nd tier persistent NPCs - they would have ability to communicate with the player on a deeper level, remember past interactions and keep track of your reputation/trust based on those past interactions. They could also give out exclusive missions, send you to another NPC as part of a larger mission or give out data needed to complete a mission, and maybe join your wing.

Longer, deeper missions - these would require more than just the use of your guns or cargo racks. Surveillance and recon, tourism and passenger transport, more extensive exploration with planet surface and asteroid topology scanning and organism cataloging, finding hidden pirate hideouts, direct help with construction efforts, interaction with second tier NPCs....etc

Some more hand-made visual assets associated with concepts in game such as characters, commodities and GalNet news articles. Reading walls of text only gets you so far. Having your eye led between colourful, immersive visuals makes it so much more interesting.

That would be lovely.... But I fear that just isn't on the cards for some reason...

Why only atmoless moons?
I think that flying in atmo of gas giants and water worlds is also pretty doable. The only planets that would require more work would be planets with life.
