Greetings Commanders,

The Gamescom Fleet Carrier Reveal was such an exciting moment for us, and after reading through your feedback, we can see that it was also exciting for you! We wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of your questions, keeping in mind that we will be revealing more about Fleet Carriers, closer to the December Update.

Will Fleet Carriers jump on the Thursday Server tick?
Fleet Carriers will not be restricted to the Thursday server tick in order to jump.

Can you clarify what 'unique' resources are?
It will be a new commodity, which can be mined or bought from certain starports. We will be exploring this in more detail in a future livestream closer to the December Update.

Will Fleet Carriers be bought with Arx?
No, Fleet Carriers will not be purchasable with Arx.

Can we customise our Carriers?
Yes, Fleet Carriers can be customised, but this is something we are going to be looking at in livestreams closer to the Decembers Update's launch.

Can Squadron members contribute to the cost?
The cost for a Fleet Carrier will come from the single commander who owns the carrier. Squadron members will not be able to contribute.

Is the Fleet Carrier restricted to the 'Bubble'?
Fleet Carriers can be purchased from certain systems and can travel outside of 'Human Space', providing they have the fuel to do so.

Where can I buy Fleet Carriers?
Fleet Carriers are purchased from certain systems, which we will look further into during our 'deeper dive' livestream.

Do Fleet Carriers work in Solo?
Fleet Carriers will work and operate in all game modes, so Open, Solo, and Private Groups.

Are Fleet Carriers destructible, and can they defend themselves?
Fleet Carriers are not destructible, but they can defend themselves and other nearby ships.

Do the loadouts have a practical effect in-game?
We will be delving deeper into loadouts, and Support Vessels in later livestreams.

Can you sell Fleet Carriers?
Fleet Carriers can be scrapped, however, it will be for fewer credits than the original purchase amount.

Will a commanders Fleet Carriers persist when logging in and out?
Fleet Carriers are persistent and will remain in the game regardless of whether or not the owner is online.

Can you change the type of carrier you have?
The 'type' of Fleet Carrier that you have is determined by the Support Vessel assigned to it, which in turn, determines its loadout. As mentioned above, this is something we will be talking about in a future stream.

Can Fleet Carriers jump into permit-locked systems?
No, Fleet Carriers will not be able to jump into permit-locked systems.

We hope this gives you an initial insight into Fleet Carriers. Do keep in mind that Fleet Carriers will be released in the December Update, and we will be showing off more about them in livestreams and forum posts closer to its launch. Thank you all for your feedback and questions, and we can't wait to reveal more as time goes on.
I think the main questions people have are:

Can you fly either of them?

Do either of them move (outside of jumping)?

Can you get a carrier without a support ship?

Is the support ship always next to the carrier or does it dock to become the front of the carrier?

Can you jump while docked like the gnosis or does it kick you out like jacques?

Is the massive frame shift hyperspace sequence something we can visually experience and does it look any different than the normal witchspace sequence?

How big are the support ships?

Do they have to be fueled separately?

How many credits would be a safe amount to save up prior to carriers if we want to get in on the action day 1?

Can you transfer ships to/from a carrier and if so what happens when you schedule a transfer and then fill up the carrier before it arrives?

The fact they indicated this Uniqueonium can be mined strikes a couple of chords.

1. Carrier Owners are very likely going to want to carry a mining ship with them to ensure they can refuel while "out there".
2. Mined resources are generally Cargo, which can be taken by Pirates, NPC or otherwise. This could increase NPC activity further from the bubble. It also gives us a potentially valuable player-to-player trading commodity.
3. We can infer from this that Frontier really wants us mining, but to what end? I suspect there may be some surprise future content based around mining. Just imagine if that "rock" you're getting ready to cut into turns out not to be a rock after all, and objects to your lasers and abrasion blasters on its "skin".

Just a few thoughts as they occur to me.

Not Frontier, but have an abundance of common sense, so I'll try to field some of these:

I think the main questions people have are:

Can you fly either of them?

Carriers, I doubt. I suspect they will be static in systems, just like the Gnosis.

Do either of them move (outside of jumping)?

Again, I suspect Carriers will be stationary, like any other megaship. Support ships... we just don't know. Speculate wildly.

Can you get a carrier without a support ship?

No way to know, though I would suspect yes. The Carrier would be a stand-alone purchase, the Support ship sold separately, but very likely to be highly desirable to add functionality.

Is the support ship always next to the carrier or does it dock to become the front of the carrier?

I'd prefer it to just hang around. Some of them look darned cool.

Can you jump while docked like the gnosis or does it kick you out like jacques?

I think the keyword here is "Carrier". If you couldn't jump while docked, it would be a "Fleet Ejector" instead of a "Fleet Carrier."

Is the massive frame shift hyperspace sequence something we can visually experience and does it look any different than the normal witchspace sequence?

I suspect they will recycle the same animations used for Capital Ships. Maybe they're make something new, but I'd be satisfied with recycled Capital Ship jumps. Those look cool.

How big are the support ships?

Smaller than a Carrier, larger than a fighter.

Do they have to be fueled separately?

Seems likely, though could potentially be a part of the Carrier's fuel supply of the Carrier.

How many credits would be a safe amount to save up prior to carriers if we want to get in on the action day 1?

400 Billion. Can't go wrong with 400 Billion. I think you dropped a Void Opal....

Can you transfer ships to/from a carrier and if so what happens when you schedule a transfer and then fill up the carrier before it arrives?

No idea yet, but seems reasonable that you would be able to transfer ships to and from a Carrier. As for what happens if you transfer to and then fill the thing... I suspect one of the following:

1. The Transfer marks the corresponding sized landing pad as "Occupied", and it is unavailable to be used.
2. The Transfer is delayed until a suitable pad is unoccupied.
3. The Transfer is cancelled, your ship returned whence it came, and you're out the credits you paid.
4. The Transfer is cancelled, your ship returned whence it came, and you're out half the credits you paid.
5. The Transfer is cancelled, your ship returned whence it came, and you're refunded what you paid, minus an Idiot Tax.
6. The Transfer is cancelled, your ship returned whence it came, and you're refunded the transfer cost.
7. The Transfer is cancelled, your ship impounded in the Raxxla Impound Lot, which you then have to find, and you're charged twice your rebuy in Impound Fees.
8. This:
Faulting application name: Elite.exe, version: 0.4.6576.0, time stamp: 0x5cb5c920

It says can't be "destroyed". There's no mention about damage.

What is the point of needing ship defenses if it's indestructible?

To keep squatters off your landing pads.

Or to keep those who have achieved Elite status in being a duck with a different vowel from sitting just above your Carrier popping you with a reverb torpedo and a few rail darts every time you try to take off.

This does, however, bring up a good, valid question:

Are Carriers utilized as a "respawn" point for a destroyed ship, if that ship had previously been docked on said Carrier?

And then to really muck things up...

If a ship is docked at a Carrier, as an Invited Guest, but then has that status revoked, and then said ship is destroyed, where will it respawn at that point? Especially if said Carrier were out along the fringe of the Galactic sector called "The Abyss"?

I don't follow - are you saying the Fleet Carriers are indestructible and can also defend themselves, even though they cannot be destroyed?

Were you there for the Gnosis fiasco? This is exactly how the existing mega-ships -- which the forthcoming fleet carriers seem likely to emulate -- operate.

I was too smart for that. A blind cyclops could have (and did) see that coming from light years away, and thousands of years in the past.

Some Megaships can be damaged and looted. That should also be possible for the FC to make PVP interesting (for those who want to PVP with FC).

The non-dockable megaships can be damaged and looted. The ones you can dock with can't.

I think we can safely assume that fleet carriers can't be damaged or looted. But the support vessels are another matter. They seem to be just another kind of non-dockable megaship, so maybe they'll have the similar gameplay attached.

This last should follow the current destruction rules so the ship should respawn at the nearest available dock, if they aren’t on the acceptable list for the Carrier it would be the same as if the nearest station was hostile.

Fleet Carriers are not destructible, but they can defend themselves and other nearby ships.

why would they need to defend themselves, if they are indestructible?

hmmm, ... and you say they are persistent? i'm picturing a bunch of carriers in a circle, shooting at each other indefinitely. what a monument!

Part of me thinks it would be cool if you could store things on your FC.

The other part of me worries that some ganker is totally going to pirate my FC while I'm not online if I keep cargo in it.

I can't see how they could not include shipyards. Amazingly they're available to solo players now, and without a shipyard it would be impossible for these to be "carriers" for solo players. They would be just a mobile station / very glorified slf.

Pending any reclassification of these things id assume they would have shipyards.

So just like any space station in the game then... a no fire zone and armed response to firing at the FC or nearby ships.

And as for the ability to refuel from mining meaning "FD are trying to force us all to mine for some unknown reason"... more reasonably, FD have given us a way to refuel when away from spaceports where we can buy the stuff. Otherwise there'd be no going exploring with them.
