Newcomer / Intro Ganked for the first time.

NPCs don't target modules or I haven't seen it. Live players do with engineered weapons designed to take out your shields, reboot your FSD and take out your power plant. With a wing you would be dead in 30 seconds. It is a totally different ED world in Open mode because many players wanted more intense combat versus NPCs in Solo or group. Enjoy.
From the description of his drives failing, it sounds like the typical NPC "your shields are down, time to spam you with missiles" and his drives got killed because he had his back to them and the drives are what they hit.

In fact, the steps he's going through almost exactly describe my first experience accidentally shooting an authority ship and becoming public enemy no. 1 while I tried to break the ring's mass-lock.

I does very much sound like NPCs to me. The game's throwing tougher ones at you because it thinks you can handle them. Of course it is possible you did get lynched by human players, and the reason you got away is because they let you live

The best thing to do is just rack all of this up to experience. The best way to get comfortable with engaging with fellow human fighters is practice, and the best place to do that is in the CQC/Arena. If your computer can handle it I'd also suggest you turn on screen recording, so if something like this happens again you can see what happened clearly

I've only been playing this game for a couple of months... and I've went thru a bunch of ships.. first ship I bought after the sidewinder was the Cobra Mkiv... did not like it..to limited.. jump range sucked. I grind a lot.. to get a lot of creds.. I bought a diamond back explorer... saw videos comparing it to the ASP Explorer.. and traded for the ASP.. that ship I loved.. for grinding.. cargo.. jump range.. etc.. but I wanted a fighter.. so I kept the ASP and bought a Fer de Lance.... Hated it.. same weekend I traded it for the Mamba.. again.. did not like it.. so a week later.. I traded for the Python.. the Python was a great ship.. but again.. jump range.. unless you engineer it... is bad.. didn't like the cockpit.. just like I hated the Fer de lance.. it bothered me... I thought.. well.. I've got about 500mil creds.. I did a stupid thing.. I bought that big flying tank the type 10 defender.. I still had the ASP.. I almost blew the stupid type 10 just getting it to my home station.. because it barely could pull up good enough to keep from frying in a sun I jumped to. Did not like the way it flew.. so.. I traded it for the Anaconda.. I put a lot into that Anaconda.. 99mil for a power plant.. etc.. I unlocked a bunch of engineers and engineered the Anaconda to the max. I ended up selling the ASP.. and bought a Chieftain.. which I am working on right now.. engineering it.. getting all the materials.. etc.. I did all of this in just a couple months.
Sad story ..
For Anaconda you need some turreted weapons in auto shoot mode + fighter maybe., because Anaconda is too slow against small ships who attacked you.

The thing is.. is this really what we have to deal with.. idiots.. sitting at a jump spot and attacking anyone that comes into the system.
I thought they were NPCs at first.. but on the radar.. Npcs are square and humans are triangles.

what it's come to, people give salt to NPCs, normal game activity :ROFLMAO:
but if people do the same thing, it's not normal activity anymore, then they are "idiots"

LOL, dude can afford an Anaconda but hasn't yet learned the difference between a human player and NPCs. THIS is what's wrong with Elite Dangerous these days :p

500m and a 'Conda in a couple of months... <four Yorkshiremen accent> you were looky Back in ma day we used ter lick rerd clean wi' oor tongs </four Yorkshiremen accent>
Good old Marty Feldman, was that on TWTWTW or The Frost report?
I mean the original not Monty Pythons cover version.

I did not see an ASP... do you know anyone that has ever made an ASP for fighting?

Asp Xs are potent in the right hands, its just you have to be aware they are giant targets and not particularly fast.

The KI Asp joke is about a mythical Asp X AI that obliterates all players regardless of what they are flying.

I used one to do bounty hunting in various grades of RESs back when I had only been playing for a few months, while not ideal they can be quite rugged and deal out useful damage a quick change of the internals and you have a fair freighter or a good explorer, another couple of months got me to the point where I could consider multiple ships such as the FdL and Python.

I loved my ASP but I used it only to grind and make creds... I upgraded everything in it to A.. then I engineered it... that took a while.. But I was mostly trying to get an all around ship.. I never put weapons on it.. just lasers for mining. I got the jump rate up over 45ly .. I know it could do better but I wanted things in it that would help me make creds.. Passenger cabin.. Srv.. etc.. I made a LOT of creds really fast.. I would swap out cargo for passenger cabins and do long sightseer missions.. I could easily make 10 mil an hour. I did a dirty drive.. etc.. and had it pretty fast.. faster than the Anaconda.. I got interdicted a bunch of times.. NPCs get sent after you when you are carrying certain passengers. But I learned how to maneuver the ASP pretty good to the point almost never got interdicted completely.. the few times I did.. I would boost out of there fast.. and jump back in to hyperspace.. I only lost the Asp 2 times.. and one time it was because I had a bounty on my head and local security force jumped me at a station.

You're a good sport for taking all the ribbing in stride ClownGod, thumbs up for that.

Truth is, the reason a lot of us are laughing is that we remember all too well when we were the ones making the same mistakes. Myself, for instance, discovering litho-braking (our slang for "slamming into to a planet") in my lovely Asp by foolishly boosting while nose down on approach because I got impatient, then discovering that the Asp, lovely as it is, has the absolute WORST brakes in the game and ventral thrusters aren't worth jack when it comes to stopping a rapid descent either (I should, of course, have flipped and thrown a boost upwards, but that was noob me, so he didn't know of such arcane arts).

Since your NMEs were solids as opposed to hollows, they were definitely NPCs. I think you just missed the NPC bravado in the comms panel because you were busy doing other stuff, I know I have. Also, human players will always have "CMDR" in front of their name, NPCs don't, they just have the name.

As to being blown up by NPCs: For all that we "older" hands say about NPCs, there's always that first time you go up against a few that are flying good ships, have good ratings and some engineering on top, and you'll be positively shocked at how much damage they can do in a short time. Then you learn their flight patterns and they become a lot easier, no matter how tough they otherwise are. The biggest gun in the 'verse ain't going to help you none if you can't hit your target, and all that. Or, as we gun "nuts" say: One .22 cal in the target is infinite times better than 4 .50 cal rounds in the wall behind him. :)

Keep at it, CMDR, it's a fun learning experience full of surprises, some of them more unwanted than others.

Maybe get a.blister on your limpet controller
Maybe get some VO's in your hold
Oh, that ain't working

I'd say that you did pretty well. Like you mentioned, the repair was only 1/16 of the rebuy. Can't complain about that too much. Maneuvering to effectively engage small ships in something like your Annie is something that takes some learning. Knowing their tactics and being able to predict what they're going to do helps a lot when you're up against more agile ships.

If I understood correctly, Your episode of nearly flying into the star upon arrival in a system can be eliminated if you turn ON the setting called "Hyperspace Dethrottle." It's in your right panel, on the "Ship" tab & "Flight Assistance" page.
Keep having (dangerous) fun...
