I assume that the players of Elite are mostly male, but some of the best SF writers are women (as this year's Nebula's demonstrate).

What is the male/female ration in Elite: Dangerous, I wonder?

Why are you concerned about the plumbing of a person that may not even be correctly identifying gender in the game?

I always wondered whether a game like this would appeal only to males. My wife is a fencer, SF&F fan, loves action films and we share a lot of interests, but gaming is one of the few that we don't. I'm curious why that is. My ten year old (boy/girl) twins love gaming and frequently play together. Is there a generational divide as well? I'm a boomer, she's Gen-X. I played the original in 1985 and am a Kickstarter backer. I love this game and wonder who's playing.

I'm also interested in players' political identification and whether that affects how they play. May do a poll about that in the future.

Oh boy....
I can see this is gonna get sideways.

Might as well do my part.... :)

I'll mimic what you posted and offer up some data.

Male.
40 (today's my birthday)
American, Texan
Father. My son (12) plays on Xbone. But not much. It's a little too hard for him. He's used to the 'hold my hand' of today's games.
Divorced. New Girlfriend is not a gamer. Unless you call candycrush a game. Technically it is, I suppose. She did enjoy the RIft demo, maybe I can get her hooked on a VR game.
Conservative. More Republican than Democrat.
Combat Veteran. Infantry.
Full time professional, construction/building automation project manager.
In game, I play as mission runner, BH, smuggler, slave trader (imperial), scavenger of USS's/POI's, part time assassin. Very little mining and exploration. I normally fly in a non-sober condition.
Never pirated. Never griefed/ganked/murdered other CMDR's.
4 ships in the fleet. Viscount and Petty Officer ranked. Based in empire space. Non pledged currently. Used to align with Patreus. 33mil in accout. Life's OK.
Never played any other elite game. Played Elite since first beta. Love the game, love this update, looking to be here for the long run.
Backed SC. Still waiting.....

There you go.
That should give you a good bit of who's playing, at least for this guy.

Oh yeah- I almost forgot...

I hope no one does anything untoward with my personal data.

Please pardon my nose, but what drew you to this game?

I'm here because when I booted the game on my C64 thirty years ago, my imagination lit up like a Christmas tree. I wanted to recapture that feeling.

Flight sims mostly.
I was playing DCS style sims but I have always like outer space types.
There was nothing on the market that interested me. X series maybe, but I never played it. EVE was too boring/speadsheet'y. I want to pilot and manage the ship myself.

I heard about SC and ED at about the same time. Jumped on both at the same time.

I liked the openness of the game. The fact that you aren't the hero and they have a ten year plan. The game will never end theoretically. It will hopefully continue to grow.
Of course the game could use more fleshing out, but I enjoy the fact that I can just put on some music and go space trucking; or I can go kill mode and pew pew all night. This game is really what you make it. And like yourself, imagination plays a big part of it.
Hardware is another thing. I like the fact that I can interact with the game and never touch the keyboard. Between HOTAS, Rudders, VA, MFD's and OR.. It feels like a ship instead of a simple game.
I wouldn't mind more in-game complexity, but to each their own.

Male, 33.

Girlfriend absolutely hates any video game of any kind. No idea why.

She'll sit and watch TV or go on social media/blogs all day.

She also says games are a waste of time. And childish. And anyone playing past the age of 16 is a pedophile. (Sorry guys!)

I'm not entirely sure where she gets this information.

Women eh?... lol

So, in answer to how the thread is evolving...

Male, 48
Wife does not play, although we coop WoW and played Battlefield: Heroes when it was still a going game.

Since the US has functionally given up its space program and I grew up in the golden age, this is as close as I can get to living elsewhere than Sol-3. We SHOULD already have a moon base, orbital power collection and an elevator. Instead, we have a bunch of short sighted money grubbers that cannot see beyond immediate profits.

MALE, but not the alpha of the pack.
contruo peronagens depending on momentary inspiration.
like reading, writing, and drawing very well.
then spend a lot more time in the fantasy world than in the real world
I was always facinado Star and space physics, in addition to follow the trends of science fiction.
And I try to split the nerd within me with the father and caring husband, passionate and homey. like attention and affection, like the game of seduction, people fall in love easy for me but I am very indiscreet and sometimes indecent a seductively.

I'm a male man, 39 but always play as female characters where I can choose a gender (mass effect, Fallout etc).

I'm practically a commie and fly for the Alliance as much as possible with a bit of Fed thrown in. I roleplay in that I never carry slaves of any sort (except to rescue them if they are dropped). Weps are fine though obvs.

I use the pilot ejection table when I die, only fly in Open (as mainly a trader but I do all sorts tbh), have been to Sgr A* (and use Sgr A* rather than Sag A), use the Computer Trade Extension, and understand Hydrostatic Equilibrium.

My wife extracts the urine because I use Voice Attack and she says all she can hear is "Boost, BOOST, Engage jump drive,    , engage jump drive,    , ENGAGE. JUMP. DRIVE. oh jesus"

I played the original in the mid-eighties on a Speccy, then dabbled with Frontier on the computers at the University of Central Lanacashires observatory, which was sweet because they had massive screens.

What drew you to THIS game in particular.

I've usually played strategy games, with the occasional dip into FPS, but I've always wanted to explore the galaxy in an open ended way.

If that was to my post then the reason I play is that I wanted to be an astronaut when I was little!

I have always been fascinated with Open World games and broke my MP duck on FPS ages ago so an Open world game, with spaceships and MP is like my dream game! I've also very interested in emergent behaviour and absolutely love the fact that the Fuel Rats exist, there is racing and any other emergent/player led behaviour - like the Dukes of Mikunn - just wow!

Male here. I usually play as a male commander, but my daughter plays from time to time as well, and I often forget to change the commander model back. I usually play strategy and RPG games, stopped playing FPS games because they're too stressful and twitch-based. My wife plays some games (Heroes of Might and Magic, Skyrim, etc), but can't stand space games. Space in general makes her extremely nervous.

That's what I'm trying to get at with this thread. What are the differences? What is attractive and what is repulsive in this activity? Is there a difference in attitude that correlates to gender? Or is it a personality thing?

Amen to that!
