I'm past the hype. So please tell me. What purpose does Colonia serve?

All I see is a 22kly journey to shoot some rocks under a slightly brighter sky box.

No, this isn't a complaint thread. I'm genuinely confused why people are putting so much effort into something that appears, to me at least, to be objectively pointless.

It's because if that opinion I'm not going. But I would like insight from those who do enjoy it.

Means I don't have to go back to that Wizard infested cesspool of a bubble to change my ship loadout.

I can't speak for all, of course, but for me it's mostly about having a bubble so small it actually makes a difference what you do with the BGS. It also helps that the majority of the stations and systems out there are named and (hopefully) maintained by actual player groups.
Yes, we hope that the BGS interaction will be tighter connected to your CMDR than it is today. One can hope we'll soon be able to get faction names connected to our CMDR's. Maybe even have our CMDR finances rely on the wellbeing of that faction.

Content coming soon.

Also when you are out that far it's a useful little nugget for a change of pace. I've been planning to head out into the Black again for a while and will no doubt tick it off my list when I do.

Colonia is like a scenic oasis of humanity far out in the deeps of space. It has hints of the bubble but much less of the drama or “civilization”. Plus it makes for a great jump off point for deep space explorers. It also provides excellent potential for future storylines within the game.

Humanity has to expand at some point, and Colonia was the first major step towards that. I’m all for it!

The point is that it's 22kLY away. It is the wild frontier of humanity. A lot of people want to feel out on the edge and far from home, building something new.

It's why I'm always a bit incredulous about 'I want to go there, but it's too far and there should be a instant warp-gate there and all modules and ships should be on sale!' threads. They rather miss the point.

If you mean why is there, then the answer is simple. After the 'discovery' of Jacques station there was a large number of players who felt that other stations around that area of space would be a good idea. FDev agreed and set up community goals for that very purpose. So is it 'for' anything? No, not really, but it does provide shelter and support to hundreds of pilots in that neck of the woods.

The bubble will be invaded by thargoids in season 3, a small outpost will stay to defend the solar systems and we'll all migrate to Colonia via the ferry new ships introduced in 2.3 . Then in season 4 we'll take our bubble back with a fleet of panther clippers.

It's a microcosm.

I.e., there's naff all there in exactly the same proportion that there's naff all everywhere else.

Is there one?

I think it's mostly there to make the bubble look incredibly dumb by building stations 22k ly away without resources when in the bubble, Sothis is still "Under Construction" and no faction can be bothered to expand to the thousands of nearby systems.

All weird people are 22 kly away from the rest of the humanity:p. I am not sure if its enough, i would have preferred if they had formed the Colonia around the beagle point i.e as far as possible:D.

Getting away from the BGS and faction influence rat race.

Oh, my mistake, you asked was is the point of Colonia. So sorry, I read it as: what was for you the point of Colonia. I'll try again.

The BGS and faction influence rat race.

ask jaques hes the madman who tried a cross galaxy jump in a starport.

it could be FD plan it as the last refuge of humanity when the thargoids take over the bubble to enslave humanity or wipe it out or probe everyone or whatever it is aliens want.
