General / Off-Topic getting old sucks

Yes, I saw that. Good for her!

Having turned 49 not too long ago the whole getting older thing has it's ups & downs, I suppose.

Started running in 2019... as of now I'm 12ish kg down from my weight then, am running 60km a week and have a place in the London Marathon in October assuming that it takes place. Will be aiming for around a 3hr 40m time which is pretty aggressive but should be doable (have run sub 2hr half on Saturday runs which are striaght forward if not easy).

Pretty much everything else is broken, though!

Although tbh the worst thing is seeing my mum get old, and we've not been able to meet up for a year now...
Sport (when we can do it) is excellent for fighting old age.

I also do a lot of sports. And I'm lucky to have my old mum who's still in her house and that I can see every day.

There are good times in old age, revelations, but overall the old age is something cruel, a shipwreck. :(

I would like to leave before too much physical and cerebral decline, and preferably during my sleep :)

Agreed, I would rather avoid all the physical woes, memory loss and general incompetence that comes with it. I am also aware enough to know that there will be no one to baby sit me once I reach that stage. Easier to just check out, no fuss no muss.

Yes, the best solution, go smoothly and before the worst.

It's a curious thing, life. When you're young, you cannot wait to be older, to enjoy all the freedoms. When you are older, you look back at your youth with affection as you were free of many responsibilities.

I have a few minor ailments/injuries I have collected over the years, nothing that impedes my life really. I tend to see them as pictures in a book, that further illustrate my story.

Anyway, I might not like the idea of getting old and creaky but I would not be a teenager growing up today, for anything.

Old age opens our eyes.

But too late.

I’m 50 next week, and I’m certainly in the Autumn of my years. But I still think I’m in pretty good nick, especially for my age.
Staying active (both mentally and physically), and still enjoying the things you always have done, is key I think.

Sure I’ve had key-hole on both knees, my muscles ache for longer, my hip is giving me problems, I can’t just brush off hangovers anymore, I’m less tolerant of other people (aka grumpy!), I’ll soon need reading glasses (wow! Just.. wow!), my prostrate needs check-ups... 😳

But... Im still clocking in 50min 10k runs, weight training twice a week, I love my job (which keeps my mind occupied) and can still unwind playing Elite pretty much whenever I want (if my wife allows it OF COURSE!).

As my wife rightly says I’m 50 going on 15, and the man-cave is basically a teenage boy’s bedroom, with LEDs, an x-rocker, HOTAS, VR set up, gaming posters, Star Wars memorabilia, dragons... Will be even more so when I start printing off ED ships with my new 3D printer I’m getting for my birthday!

Plus, with added maturity comes added wealth. I’m fortunate enough now that if I wanted that new gpu/system/headset or whatever it’s perfectly attainable.
20 years ago I would have had to think long and hard about even ordering Odyssey.
30 years ago I couldn’t have afforded the base game.

Now I enjoy much better holidays (Covid aside), I’m drinking Chateau nerf de pap instead of Thunderbird, I actually have a car that doesn’t break down every 30 miles, I can shower in the morning instead of having to have a bath at night and worrying about using all the hot water, the heating goes on when it’s cold, every football game I want to watch is available to me at the press of a button, so I don’t have to listen on the radio anymore, or avoid the news entirely and wait for Match of the Day (“if you don’t want to know the scores, look away now”)...

And in 10 years time, I won’t even have to work anymore, and I will be able to do pretty much whatever the hell I want with the rest of my life.

Just gotta keep young in mind and body boys. It’s the path to happiness 😊

Old age is a blessing
