I’m 50 next week, and I’m certainly in the Autumn of my years. But I still think I’m in pretty good nick, especially for my age.
Staying active (both mentally and physically), and still enjoying the things you always have done, is key I think.
Sure I’ve had key-hole on both knees, my muscles ache for longer, my hip is giving me problems, I can’t just brush off hangovers anymore, I’m less tolerant of other people (aka grumpy!), I’ll soon need reading glasses (wow! Just.. wow!), my prostrate needs check-ups...
But... Im still clocking in 50min 10k runs, weight training twice a week, I love my job (which keeps my mind occupied) and can still unwind playing Elite pretty much whenever I want (if my wife allows it OF COURSE!).
As my wife rightly says I’m 50 going on 15, and the man-cave is basically a teenage boy’s bedroom, with LEDs, an x-rocker, HOTAS, VR set up, gaming posters, Star Wars memorabilia, dragons... Will be even more so when I start printing off ED ships with my new 3D printer I’m getting for my birthday!
Plus, with added maturity comes added wealth. I’m fortunate enough now that if I wanted that new gpu/system/headset or whatever it’s perfectly attainable.
20 years ago I would have had to think long and hard about even ordering Odyssey.
30 years ago I couldn’t have afforded the base game.
Now I enjoy much better holidays (Covid aside), I’m drinking Chateau nerf de pap instead of Thunderbird, I actually have a car that doesn’t break down every 30 miles, I can shower in the morning instead of having to have a bath at night and worrying about using all the hot water, the heating goes on when it’s cold, every football game I want to watch is available to me at the press of a button, so I don’t have to listen on the radio anymore, or avoid the news entirely and wait for Match of the Day (“if you don’t want to know the scores, look away now”)...
And in 10 years time, I won’t even have to work anymore, and I will be able to do pretty much whatever the hell I want with the rest of my life.
Just gotta keep young in mind and body boys. It’s the path to happiness
