Getting use out of those X52 extras (pic hvy)

I highly recommend using the pinkie for Flight Assist OFF (hold). Makes you feel bad ass holding that down then pulling back on the stick to get a bead on your target

I'm still trying to find a use for the rotaries and precision slider though. I really want to be able to cycle fire groups, change scanner range, and cycle targets with them but I see no way for this to work with this kind of input. Any suggestions?

I use the wheel on the throttle, near the HAT, to change scanner range.

Still haven't found a use for the other two rotaries. I also rebound the small button near the mouse stick for my SC jump button, though I think I may swap that one with the reverse throttle and see if it's more 'organic'.

I'm not entirely sure that the precision slider can be programmed from within ED. I'm with you though, I'd love to be able to find some uses for them. :D

Who's he calling a middle aged illiterate elite players out there.

Oh right that's me ;-)

Really many thanx for the effort and the post I think things will work much better now with my X52 non pro now

Hi!

Nice guide, thanks for taking the effort.

On a somewhat related note, I'm considering buying one of these beauties, but I've heard some worrisome rumours about the X52 - in particular related to win 8.1 and future compability support. Aside from that, it looks nice - but how is it to live with (compared to an x55 for example)? In particular, and I know this guide isn't in favour of that, is it fairly easy to get to work nowadays? I don't mind a bit of messing about, but I've grown tired of compability issues.

Any advice for a potential fellow X52'er? :)

The driver/software disk that comes with it is fossilized. Use it as a coaster or trash it but don't even think of installing from it on any system newer than XPSP1. Those downloadable work just fine under win7, can't speak to win8 because I hope to go a LONG time before putting that digital turd on my HDD.

As for the hardware, I personally like it a lot. I have large hands with long fingers (octave+2 stretch on a regular piano keyboard) so I didnt need to adjust the rest on the stick but it was trivial to adjust it for my kids smaller hands too. The controls on the throttle fall easily under the fingers, the only difference needed for folks with smaller hands than mine would be to adjust exactly where on the throttle you choose to rest the palm.

I've owned my X52 (not pro) for almost a decade and have never had even the slightest problem with hardware reliability and it barely has any cosmetic wear showing. However, I do know that the initial hardware batches produces after madcatz bought out saitek were widely reported to have build quality and reliability issues - and some of those initial batches may still be in the supply chain. Pre-madcatz and the more recent batches are rock-solid.

I'm running the X 52 Pro on Win 8.1 and the latest drivers/smart software from Saitek since about a week, everything works fine if you follow Calabans excellent tutorial and unbind all buttons ("i", pinky button, mode selector, ...) . It just took Win one restart and (but I'm not sure about that) on unplug/replug to fully identify the stick (it already worked more or less before, but I couldn't program any buttons).

This might interest you, too (i use both):
Two-Stage Trigger
Programming to mode selector via macros

EDIT:
@ DaveB: Win8.1 with 7+TaskbarTweaker and Classic Start Menu installed looks and feels just like Win 7, but you still profit from an up-to-date OS. (this means, of course, that I haven't seen a single tile since setup :))

I'm running the Windows 10 Technical Preview. The 7.x drivers off the Saitek site work fine. I'm pretty sure that the 5.0 XP64 drivers the disc happily installed were the root cause for making my system unbootable though and needing to do a full OS reinstall. (Yes, silly me for installing the drivers that came on the disc, what was I thinking?)

Ahh bummer. Macros bug out for me and repeat ad nauseam, and trigger a bsod in the Saitek.dll if I change the profile while they're going. So no actions on entering or exiting Modes for me. :(

It's being interfered with by something polling the stick - probably Teamspeak or similar. Switch Teamspeak to mouse/keyboard only on the push to talk and you'll be fine. Might need a complete reinstall and removal of Saitek drivers if they're broken.

Basically - hunt for anything that's polling the stick for inputs outside the game and disable that function

Its a good guide sir, but I believe by simply not having the Saitek software installed, and ONLY the basic driver, you can use all the buttons and controls in Elite Dangerous anyway, thats certainly how mine works (Non-Pro) and I have never run with the profiler...

Yes, but you can't do more complex programming of sequences of things like open gun ports, power to shields and guns and the dynamic reallocatuon of buttons to differing schemas

I would appreciate any profiles for my x52 non pro stick to test out and check I am doing it correctly.

I have tried the OP and it seems to work fine but I have suddenly encounter an issue where the axis goes off center. (for example the center suddenly moves up and to the right) I have read this is common issue with saitek hardware and looks to be to do with the profiler. There are suggestions about removing possible corrupted data in the registry and removing them has removed the problem, but most just pull the usb cable and reconnect. Whilst this isn't a problem in general flight, during a firefight it will be problematic.
If I remove all profiles but leave the control panel for the stick up it works fine and the pinkie button works. I would be interested in hearing if others have had a similar issue when using the profiler and if so how they got around the problem.

I have this exact same issue (x52 non pro) You can fix it in game by pulling the cable like you said, but it's not really helpful during combat.
So I can't use any profiles and just have the control panel open when I play Elite so the pinkie trigger works.
I'd also like to know if anyone has a solution.

Very interesting thread! So far, I had no issues with my X52 pro, but the ideas to use the mode switch is intriguing. Currently I use a moderately customized version of the the default X52 (pro) setup so I would have to adopt to the new bindings, but it sounds to be worth it.

But that leads to another question for me - how to do something like that (Macros, Mode-Switching) then the OS X version is released? (For now, I'm running Elite: Dangerous in BootCamp on Windows 8.1). Having two different setups for playing Elite: Dangerous on Windows and on OS X is not very appealing, so I would like to research for a similar solution on OS X.

I wonder if ControllerMate would do as a replacement for the Saitek Software. Has somebody some experience with it, especially how well it performs?

Currently, I'm using the stick with X-Plane, FreeSpace and Oolite on OS X and I was quite satisfied with the inherent (OS based) support for it. Despite the fact that FreeSpace has even more bindable actions than Elite: Dangerous, not to mention flight sims like X-Plane. But I took it for granted that I still have to use the keyboard - the HOTAS is just for the "most important" controls. So I took the same approach for Elite: Dangerous. But it definitely would be nice to exploit this stick to the max on OS X, too! :)

Hi CMDR's just got an X52-Pro for christmas from my wife. All working great, with just one small question

Can we replace the;

-------------------------
Mode 1

No Profile
-------------------------

Display on the MFD to something custom like;

-------------------------
Welcome

CMDR Aquila Oculus
-------------------------

Or something like that?

Basically does anyone know a way to alter that text?

Thanks, and merry christmas :)
