Giant monitor => weightless VR?

Have been drooling over a 55" Curved 4K Samsung for ages to replace all the monitors on my desktop... reckon the curve will add to the perceived FOV! Not sure how well it will work for photoshop and other desktop activities though ;)

In all fairness dude, my setup is 3 46" TV's with trackIR (for DCS), it has been made completely redundant with VR. It's not even remotely close to experiencing everything in true size and depth. Everyone holding off consumer versions are in for a big treat.

Pretty much ruined gaming for me, prior to going the VR routes I thought trackIr and big screen TV's was the ultimate experience. Now I can only play VR compatible titles. It's like going from a game boy to a high end rig.

Still, big TV gaming is pretty awesome, I still have a PS4 hooked up to the big screen for fallout & GTA :D

Agreed I have been trying to tell people this for ages. VR changes everything, it is something you can't explain, it is fundamental.

The thing I wonder about curved monitors... The spatial distorts that happens on edges/corners disappears if you sit at the exact right distance from a TV. However, a curved TV could only be non-distorted either horizontally or vertically, but never both since those requite two different viewing distances. Unless I am mistaking how curved TVs display images?

I don't even know how it is on a small Monitor, I have always played Elite in my Livingromm where the PC is hooked up to the TV. Main Reason for that is that I simply do not have any space for any kind of seperate PC setup with monitor and all that, my Livingroom is to smal for that and I'm glad I managed to get my Bed in somehow in the Bedroom :D

I just took the advice of a friend and tried plugging my PC into my 46" TV. Was previously using a 27" gaming monitor.

In a word: WOW.

Turns out I've been playing the game wrong for almost a year. Now I can see so much more, even at the same 1080 resolution. I am cleaning house in CQC. Exploration is a grand visual feast. And best of all, now that my screen is roughly "life-sized" I feel like I'm really in the cockpit! My stomach even drops when I buzz neutron stars or get too much air in my SRV. Head tracking works soooooo much better as well since I don't have to use my peripheral vision to look 90 deg anymore! I can just look at the top/right/left half of the screen! Actually look AT the screen to check my flanks. It's nothing short of game changing.

Its almost like having free VR, just by carrying my TV from the living room into the computer room.
I just got a 32" 1080p monitor instead of spending more than twice as much and getting a 980Ti. I absolutely agree - it really makes a difference. I was previously using 3x24" 1080p monitors, which added a nice amount of peripherality to the experience, but having one massive monitor right in your face makes headtracking much smoother and allows me to up the quality settings without sacrificing 60fps vsynced.

It makes forum combat better too, as I don't have to squint any more to see small text. [/old man problems]

The biggest negative is tha I can't see people coming as easily any more when playing Battlefield; I've lost a big chunk off my FoV in that game.

I play on a 32" 1080p Panasonic flat screen. It's good, but I'm kinda blind as a bat, so I have to sit on the floor right in front of it. Lol
Looks good though.

TVs getting old now, so I may replace it with a 42+" TV one day. Maybe 4K, but then I need to upgrade my PC to cope. Lol
Money money money money.....

If only earning momey real life was as easy as ED. Lol

i recently got 28 4k samsung monitor-the problem with bigger monitor i have is that 1080 p resolution i used to play with looks washed out and almost blurry now
if i switch to 4k it does look amazing but my gtx 970 just doesnt cut it
i compared 4k and supersampling and i can say they about look the same-4k has more detail clarity on everything and 2.0 supersampling has a tiny almost unnoticeable difference but it take much less power and framerate doesnt go bad that much

Yeah.... You have to have good gpu if you planing go 4k.... That's what mistakes ppl do.

along this line though, will FD every plan on displaying the game on multiple screens?

Specifically, It would be ideal to be able to access the 1 & 4 side panels without completely taking your peripheral vision off the front. Right now it's like "texting" and flying.

But the scale is off and if you look around you dont see to the left or right. so VR IMHO is better

Probably so, but if you set up the distance just right on a 46", the scale is pretty darn close. If you set up head tracking just right, then you don't have to turn your head as far to see the same view, which means faster response time in combat. Also, you don't have ~0.5 kg of gear on your face, so its more relaxing ;)

Gotta wonder what text looks like if you up-sample to 4K from a lower resolution like 1080 or 1440? If it's readable, maybe you don't need a better card? Especially if your eyes are as bad as mine.

I think what Privata is trying to say is no matter how big the screen, you are still looking at a TV screen. Kinda why I said earlier that VR has ruined a lot of older games for me.

To put it in perspective - I can stare at one of those massive planetary skyscrapers on a 60" TV and it would be very impressive. In VR I am actually looking at a real size Skyscraper. Kinda hard to explain, but imagine the difference between looking at the Empire state building on a big TV, then imagine actually standing next to the Empire state building. That's the difference between VR and Monitors.

But hey, am definitely not knocking the Big screen TV experience, it is pretty damn cool with head tracking :)

Ah, I thought he was just talking about the size and spatial perspective. Which is very close for me if my head is ~20" from the center of the TV. Probably not great for my eyes long term... I do wonder about the long term effect of VR too though. Google is claiming it causes brain damage, but I think that may a bit alarmist. Especially since their logic is like saying a new glasses prescription causes brain damage, lol.

Btw, for a bigger TV, I'd have to sit farther back to get the same effect but that would be focused at such a long distance that it would feel more like I'm looking "at" something rather than "through" it. With my current setup, I feel like I could fall through my monitor and into the cockpit. So 46" seems to be a "sweet spot". Again, I am sure that VR is much better, for the time being, this is pretty darn good. And I am willing to wait for more mature VR solutions which will be even better I am sure.

My only worry with VR is long term psychological effects in certain people once it goes mainstream, and its potential for desensitizing people, but that's a whole different topic!
