Give the python an SLF!

Have never really understood why the forums are generally opposed to the idea. I guess I don't use fighters enough, What huge advantage do they bring in PvP and PvE?

I have fighters installed on all my large multipurpose/mining/freighters ships, however they are not necessary at all for PvE, and I have not used them for PvP, essentially they are just a nice toy to have on-board a ship. I might use them to distract an enemy or if I want to drop into a RES or COMP nav Beacon to spice up a trade run.

Just struggling to see how they would make the Python OP? personally I'd take the cargo space on a Python over a fighter, you pretty much need all cargo racks to make the Python a half decent pure freighter, would maybe install a fighter on a multi purpose build.
I find them quite useful, especially when taking on a large wing of tough ships; they can keep one of them busy for you. But for me they also add to the immersion plus they're quite fun.

Exactly, yet I keep hearing they would make the Python OP. I have never installed a fighter bay and suddenly thought my combat capability has massively increased, they are just a bit of fun, very handy in certain situations, but that's as far as it goes in my case.

Anyway, the Python is not going to have a fighter bay installed, purely because it was never designed to have a hangar. The devs have been very matter of fact about SLF hangars on ships, and I doubt they would spend time/money redesigning the Python for no real reason.

Isn't that a bit like suggesting we should give the Corvette another pair of C4 hardpoints cos, y'know, it can already mince any NPC with the 2 it's got so fitting another 2 wouldn't make any difference?

As a diehard Python pilot (ummm, may get edited....) who still rates it the best all-round ship in the game, who would love to see it with a slightly higher number of util slots, mil slots, quicker eng's, one more weaps slot and a SLF I have to admit that pretty much all of those additions (except maybe the util slot) would make it too damned good.

Python should be left alone. (I can't believe I said that)

Ooh now there's an idea! All lined up in a row just above the cockpit. That'd be a fun ship!

As for the OP. I remember buying my Python and just sort of assuming that it would have an SLF and being really disappointed when I realised it didn't have one. I think the medium pad thing is the deal breaker here. Having a relatively capable ship that can carry that much cargo AND fit on a medium pad. There's just no room for a hangar.

I seem to recall a same subject thread last year where someone posted diagrams showing the python couldn't contain the rectilinear edges and volume of the fighter hangar due to the tapered sides. While the more rectangular volume dimensions of the keelback can.

For some reason, I had it in my head that the Chieftain was going to have an SLF bay. Probably due to all the talk about what the various hatches were in pre-release pictures etc.

When it was released, I was kind of disappointed that it won't fit an SLF cos I was looking forward to building one for my NPC to fly while I piloted the SLF.
After testing out the Chieftain, though, it's apparent that it, too, would have been way overpowered if it had an SLF.

This where having varients would be nice - the ship kits are just cosmetic, if we could actually turn a mark 3 cobra into a 4 for instance that would be neat, or have a "stretch" Orca (like with 747 varients), heck even have say a sidewinder with just one large weapon strapped to it and nowt else etc etc.
it would even make sense for engineering to come into play as well - be an awful lot to implement and balance, but we can hope that we might see something like it one day

I tend to bumble around in a very multrole manner and find the Python to be my long term 'default' ship as it's often hard to find a reason to use anything else.

Rather than muck around with the Python, I'd welcome a competitor with similar characteristics as a viable alternative. Please though NOT a Python II. History to date suggests increments, and in the case of the Asp, decrements are often 'less than successful'. And as for the Keelback.....

Said the same thing myself.

Personally, I wish there was some kind of "used ship dealer" in the game, where you could "gamble" on buying a used ship which might turn out to be a pile of junk or it might turn out to be a standard ship with some useful pre-engineered modules or, at best, might be a non-standard configuration.

Alternatively, perhaps they could be offered as rewards for completing an especially difficult series of chained missions?

Aye, the problem is of course the vast complexity of ship models and varients this would require the game to "fully" support (cosmetic kits while adding some work don't affect game balance, flight mechanic and so on) - one of the many reasons for Star citizens delay is the sheer number of different ships they are trying to have - nice if someone can pull it off though.

It's a no from me. If the python had an slf the FGS would be totally redundant imo. Python is already the joint most useful all rounder in the game along with the conda.

Whilst some medium ships do have slf bay (fgs and keelback) they make other compromises to have them

But, the python would be sacrificing a 5 slot, and all that extra weight.

Compare the FAS to the FGS and we can see the sacrifices the slf bay forces... Even without an slf installed. IF FD did that everyone who enjoys the python as it is now would (rightfully) be up in arms.
Don't get me wrong I have no issues with more medium sized slf capable ships. And afaik the krait will be one such ship
