Horizons Glide transition is annoying

I am still wondering how atmospheric transition is going to work seeing as how all the ships don't look in the slightest like they could handle re-entry (no signs of heat shielding/exposed thrusters and cargo hatches/various other do-dads on the bellies of these ships). But then again we sit on top of stars sucking in fuel so I guess they could handle it.

A wild guess...Planets with atmospheres are not online yet. When they arrive there is going to be a transition as we're going to be flying slower or burning up. Maybe this transition is part of what is to come.

There has to be some sort of transition, you cannot simply cruise into an atmosphere. You can blast your way out, but you gotta ease into one. It will be cool to say the least.

Don't see why we have to 'ease' into it seeing as how our ships are able to sit on the event horizon of a black hole or scoop fuel in the corona of a star. I would think landing on a planet with an atmosphere would be just as simple as landing on one without it. If it is different then its pretty immersion breaking seeing as what I said before we do with out much effort.

Ships in ED wont need heat shields. My guess is you will take shield damage on re-entry and provided you are well shielded you will be fine. May need to play with moving power to shields dependent on gravity of the world maybe also the atmosphere value (high atmospheric pressure might degrade shields faster). Well if I was an ED dev thats what I would do :\

There should only ever be a delay if your dropping into a heavily populated instance. Dropping into an empty instance on a planet's surface is instantaneous, you literally shouldn't be able to see any pause or hitch between glide and surface flight.

Sadly I think the delay is a necessary part of getting everyone synced up over a peer to peer network. Last night dropping into "base camp zero" in Pallaeni took almost 30 seconds!

Maybe I wasn't absolutely clear in my OP - I am referring to the horrible delay transitioning from "Orbital Cruise" into the "Glide". Glide completion is really smooth but going into glide is annoying because you are hurtling along (in orbital cruise) and suddenly you seem to be held in suspension whilst the transition to glide occurs. It seems strange because the planetary surface looks as though it is detailed already so what exactly is being "loaded" to require that transition effect?

Atmospheric shields. Presumably the shield envelope will shape itself into an aerodynamic lifting body or elliptical wing shape regardless of how brick-like the ship is.

On topic, yeah the drop from orbital cruise is usually quick enough for me, though still with a noticable delay even into empty instances. Over starports or places with players though I can be left hanging for several seconds while the network catches up, and I have good internet. It's exactly the same as dropping from warp in space but it's more noticeable when you stop moving for several seconds over a planet surface.

The graphics become more detailed as I settle into Orbital Cruise, but I see a smooth transition from approaching the planet all the way through orbital cruise, glide and landing and I am only using a laptop (HP Omen 15).

One question to OP - are your drivers up to date?

This has little to do with system specs, it's all about the network. It's the exact same problem that happens with regular normal space / supercruise / hyperspace transitions. Depending on your connection and the health of the matchmaking servers it might take a while or be quick.

The last planet I was on, going from Orbital to glide took 3 seconds. i7, 2x gtx 970 ftw+, 16 gigs ram, 70mb download. Only way to really make it feel somewhat seamless, is to fly straight and don't move the stick when transitioning. Otherwise you'll notice obviously, the stick locking while it loads. The planet still moves forward during the transition though. So they are trying to blend that part of the visual. Its the frozen stick that pulls you right out of the 'moment'. So I avoid touching it when I know i'm close to glide.

You can see here where its a little jarring when turning, heading into glide mode.

This is definitely to do with hardware. There was always a pause of a few seconds on my GTX 660 but when I got my GTX 970 that pause disappeared entirely.

Since Engineers dropped, it's taking me anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. I'm on minute 5 right now trying to drop into Martuuk's base in Kuhn.
.
Really annoying. Have a monster system and internet connection, so it is definitely not that. I think it may have something to do with playing in open because I've noticed it's far, far worse than solo or Mobius.

In the time it's taken me to type this, I'm still awaiting transition to the surface. Ridiculous. It's been about 7 minutes so far ...

Same here :(

It's a network thing. In areas with lots of players, it can take a stupid long time to transition.

On the bright side, I've noticed that when alone it usually goes faster than 2.0.

It is network lag due the higher than normal players logging in to play the new update. Instance transitions have always been flaky when a lot of players are playing, it is happening when switching between systems too.

Stick on the bandwidth monitor with Ctrl B, and you will see it keeps stalling at 0 during the transition; normally it would simply transfer the data and you would be in.

Wow - necro my old complaint. Actually I had found the transition time had basically vanished before 2.1 launched. I have only made two planetary landings since 2.1 and both were seamless, no tardis-timey-wimey-effects at all.

It's definitely the P2P networking.

I have a GTX980ti and a 200Mb connection but transition to glide sucks because I'm in another country.
