Going Exploring

So it's been a while since I've been out of the bubble (Did a Sag A* run for the Sirius CG, so got back late June). I've had some fun - got an extra rank in both combat and trading, upgraded my freighter from a t-6 to a t-7, got some good powerplay upranking and took part in the series of Bast goals, but my original plan was to go exploring, so I've pulled my Asp out of mothballs and finish upgrading it.

Plan is to go east (well right as per the map) as it's the rough general direction I've not gone in. I'm going to go for 8-10 Light Millenia, and then pick out a big, uncharted nebula and remove that second descriptor from there.

At present I'm at 5,067 systems visited, I'll check when I reach my target nebula, but I'm hoping once in full survey mode to pick up 1,000 systems, plus about 600-700 for the transit.

Here's the configuration I'm taking out - Since last time I've stripped the guns off, and pushed the FSD up to top level. I've dropped the shields to minimum, and kept on a chaff just in case I get an interdiction on the way out or back

I'm away for the weekend, but looking to set off Monday evening and clear the bubble

Day 0: spent a couple of jumps trying (and failing) to get Captain's Log connecting, so here are the final pre start stats:

Started with a push out the galactic south for 150 light years or so to clear the bubble (without incident, although I was in solo so only NPCs were a concern). After that I turned eastward and started honk jumping with an initial target of the Puppis Dark Region B. Got there reasonably soon, and nitced that tagging wasn't fully up so picked up a copule of full scans, but mostly to get my scanning arm warmed up again- One was a boring rockless M class binary, the other was slightly more interestin - a sting of icy planets plus a HMC. Still, there were a lot of tagged systems still in there, so I decieded to push on for anothe light millenium, and found a nice system to park up in - 5 stars and a bunch of planets - half way through, and mostly airless - mix of metal, rock and ice but still good to get something tagged in for myself.

Took a shot of a nice close trinary on the way, enjoy:

What's the problem you're having with Captain's Log? Perhaps I can help?

Good luck Cdr

Want to see the inside of a black hole...this is what it looks like when you get dumped in from hyperspace and hit the back of the black hole!

I manages to supercruise out, but my heat went up a LOT, take at least 2 heat sinks (no reloads out there!)

Fly safe and avoid neutron stars and black holes...

Day 2 - deeper into the void

Another day of jumping, pushing to the inner edge of our galactic arm and pushing along it. Still mostly honking, but i did stop for an explore halfway through, and got some good shots of a ringed gas giant, and a ringed iceball - I love how the planet's shadow on that seems to slice a hole in the rings:

I'd also like to thank Commander Maximus Sosirius for going out with only an Intermediate scanner - just seen a system first tagged by him, but only the outer worlds.

This is all good stuff. :)

Also - you never did reply to my question about what your problem was with getting CL up and running ;)

I feel snubbed. Snubbed, I say! :p

Sorry!

I tried to get it fixed with you on the thread on your website - it isn't pulling through from the logs into CL. I'm afraid I've ended up using EDDiscovery instead and i'm pretty comited now.

Day 3 - On (to) Liberty

So, I've chosen a place I'm going to start a detailed survey on - the Statue of Liberty Nebula, near 6 light millenia from the bubble. Here it is on the approach:
HighResScreenShot_2015-08-27_20-14-06.jpg

I've started doing fullsweeps of systems, getting everything but the 'roids, which is why I've slowed down somewhat. I'm also trying to get the systems fully mapped into EDDiscovery, which involves a series of measurements to registered systems that the calculates the coordinates pretty exactly.

Also decided to have a look back - I think this is roughly the bubble, but I might see if I can find these bright stars on the way back...

HighResScreenShot_2015-08-27_20-16-39.jpg

Also a technical question - ED by default saves screenshots, so I have to jump into paint and resave the interesting ones as jpegs for uploading - can you force the game to do that bit?

Hey that's okay - EDDiscovery is a fine app to use as well :)

On my site you say - I'll have to read it to find out which sub-threads I didn't answer - sorry about that!

This has to be me to be party ruiner it seems. If you think to find an uncharted nebula, expecially not randomly genrated, and especially that close to the bubble, you will have a big dissappointment. Statue of liberty is scanned to the bone, i don't think there's a single M left untagged.

Your best bet is a random generated nebula on Map 7 of galactic mapping community project (see signature), altough i doubt there are some completly untouched.

Of course, as i suggest you, you can ignore those tags and do your stuff, enjoy your trip, and for sure you will have the opportunity to tag a whole lot of things outside nebulae, ELW and other oddities included. In every expedition i made the travel was far more exciting than the destination.

OP,
how are you able to jump 2000LY in a day? How long did that take you? I'm 1850LY from the bubble and that has taken 2 hours. I've found so many non-discovered is funny. I only get about 1-2 hours of game play and try for the 1,000LY per day, but, already falling behind.

It depends how much you stop to surface scan. This is why if you have a goal cherry picking is the only way to go (told the one that after 2 months is just halfway to Sag A*)

I've had a slow day of detailed scanning on the rim of the sector - just 5 systems, all scanned dry though. Tagging has been quite light so far suprisingly - a copule where the primary star/close worlds have been taged as if it were a refulling stop for the commander, but nothing too onerous.

I'm going to spend a lot of Sunday exploring a bit mire of here, and then look to make a decision- I'm eitherr going to push on, or I might turn back briefly and deposit the so far data in the comunity goal before jumping straight back out. We'll see.

I'm tending to get 3 hours of play in of an evening, and whilst I travel I'll normally only honk the systems on route and do a more detailed search at the light millennia stops where i recalculate the jump route. I'm almost certainly missing nice stuff, but the aim this trip was to travel to a place and then do detail there.

Having the ipad set up with netflix next to me helps -gives me something to take my mind off the slightly more numbig bits.

Day 4 - Around the Liberty Nebula

Spent a day getting scans out in the Statue of Liberty nebula, almost all already discovered, but will have my name on some oceballs at the edges I hope.

Mostly a mixture of icy, rocky and high metal content rocks, but did find a system with two water worlds (was a split binary, one orbiting each of the stars:

I've aslo decided that I'm gonig to take a quick break for the CG, so tomorrow I'm going to shoot back to the bubble for the shortest of visits.

Day 5 - so many systems

Well it's been a busy day! I've got 12 hours of play in, and visited 213 systems in total.

I started with a bit more in the Statue of Liberty Sector, doing a last few full system scans. One of the systems I ran was a trinary with a single planet. Everything was scannable from being stopped to scoop, and yet only the primary star had a first discovery flag on it. I jumped out a bit to get this shot:

HighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_13-13-08.jpg

I also got some lovely shots of star rise over a gas giant:
HighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_10-25-07.jpg
Once I cleared the Sector, I started to mostly honk'n'scoop, occasionally dropping out ot pick out interesting sites, and doing the odd Triliteration in EDDiscovery to lock in the location. On one of these, I noticed I was just 5 light centuries below GCRV 715 in the Blue Planetary Nebula, which I thought I'd take the time to have a look at, as per below:

HighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_15-21-06.jpgHighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_15-19-38.jpg

By this stage it was abut twenty past three game time, so it was time for the long slog toward the bubble. I decided to aim to approach via the coalsack. I'd lost track of how close I was getting to the bubble, until I saw this:

HighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_21-47-43.jpg

A sign of humanity, which of course I had to look into.

HighResScreenShot_2015-08-31_21-50-00.jpg

Seems like some poor schmuck had got themselves lost on the trip to Slough, and had ended up being destroyed out here, scattering their toxic waste everywhere, 698.68 light years from Lembava.

I'm now bedding down for the night, having powered up the shield generator and chaff launcher for the first time since I left the bubble on Day 1. Plan is to jump the last stretch to Cemiess, and drop off this batch of data, before heading back out somewhere.
