Gonna be some moody explorers..

Nice new bug where you cannot map fire groups unless you have a weapon on your ship. But, since you cant map fire groups and all the fire groups have been blanked by the update, weaponless explorers are screwed if they are out in the black as there is now no way to use the surface scanner or honk. (i worked around it by nipping back to the carrier, putting a weapon on, mapping the fire groups then unequipping the weapon.)

As a partial workaround while they fix this, you can still honk by going into the FSSS view and doing it from there, you just need to map a key in the game controls menu under Discovery Scan.

Are you sure?

I am currently in my unarmed exploration Hauler, and I was able to map the fire groups just fine, after I found out they had been wiped by the update. 🤷‍♂️

I managed to map fire group 1 but when I tried to set up fire group 2 I couldn't, so I have the FSS mapped but not the surface scanner, strange.

OK, upon reading this thread, I went back to make some trials, and the remapping of fire groups was not working any more, so I have run a few tests in different situations and I found that there are specific situations when it works:
-during a jump to another system (in the hyperspace tunnel) you are able to remap
-upon relogging, before doing anything else with the ship: if you are landed (or docked) go straight to remapping and it should work. if you are in flight, again, do not touch the controls, go into the fire groups immediately

Looks like an annoying bug, but at least there is a workaround and we only have to do the mapping once. 🤞

Got it working, it's only when you create a new fire group it plays up. How I did it was when I created fire group 2 the interface becomes unresponsive. Then you log out to the main menu and back in, it then allows you to assign keys for the new fire group, and I assume the same process for any further fire groups you create.

Appears there are a number of odd workaround that can help.......

TBF I did have some unarmed ships but it just felt wrong. It's 2 pacifiers and 2 frags on my explorer Phantom nowadays. +50ly jump range is more than enough.
i just dont see the point. My explorer is poorly shielded and has a weak hull, so im running from combat every time.

I am tempted to fill it with reverb cascade lightweight torps though, 2.4 tons of weapons isnt much and that would definitely be a disincentive to would be chasing gankers (chase me and lose your shield gen or let me go)

Ah, that explains it.
It's also why, contrary to what OP said, at least some unarmed explorers might actually not experience this issue at first :)
I usually double map: Discovery and data link scanners under one button, composition scanner and detailed surface scanner under second. Without weapons, there's no need to have another firegroup :)

Apparently, limpet controllers seem to count as weapons for this bug (or, it only affects you if you only have the utilities group). Went to fix long range explorer that has a limpet, and its not a problem there. LIkely wont be that big an issue - i was in my specialist long range Krait II thats specifically designed for raw mat gathering in Odyssey (having a fighter is very useful, and its easier to land than a Conda), and that has no need for limpets or guns.
