GPU advice ASAP

If the 1070 OC cards match its performance you will see the 980Ti going for a lot less than that.
Instead of a 1070 OC, get a 1080 standard card. Will run a lot cooler, be more stable and you can OC it as an option. Some games do not handle OC GPU's very well and if your card is OC out of the box, you don't leave yourself wiggle room in case of issues.

As for the 980Ti prices coming down, I don't see it happening soon. I paid $659.99 US for mine on Amazon and a price check shows the current price is $659.95 which is a four cent difference from February. If prices were falling, Amazon would be leading the pack. Demand for HMD's will go up for a while and the cards that can drive them will be in demand. 980Ti is a damned good card and it's not going to lose a significant amount on the asking price any time soon.

Jeezus, that link... 500quid for a 980Ti. Ouch.

Waiting for a 1070 or 1080 is the prudent option.

Significantly more power (and therefore longevity) over a 980/980Ti if you're coming from a R9 290. A 1080GTX will have a lot more in reserve for potential driver updates, developers making use of the SMP features for VR.

Try your 290 for now and wait. Stay on target!

That link is on the cheap side for a 980 ti (as at 19-05-2016) but I hadn't realised how close the 1080's were to being delivered. Really the choice is made I'm waiting for the new cards - chances are I'll get a 1080 some time in June but I'll see how much the 980 ti drops. The 290 was a guess it's actually a R9 200 or Radeon 7970 but it still runs as Adam has the same model so I'll stick with that for the next few weeks.

Holy carp, I really wasn't expecting this! :D

Just getting into the tutorial is mind blowing, the only VR I'd tried before this was cardboard and it's not even close. Yes you can make out individual pixels, a bit like sitting too close to an old cathode ray tube TV (actually nowhere near that bad but it's a similar effect) but only if you really look for it.

The scale is so real but thing that really did it for me was the controllers, when I placed them on the floor for calibration and they're there in VR. I reached out for them and they're there in my hands in VR (sans hands) but I just picked up a virtual device and I can feel it and move it and it just reacts the same in VR!

Hehe aye. Nobody understands!

VR is great yes, room scale VR is another level. :)

"(I've got a mini displayport to HDMI cable on order)"

You might be better off with a displayport to mini displayport instead.

Possibly (and thanks) I'm thinking Mini DisplayPort to HDMI for the TV and real HDMI for the Vive, no great rush as I can get into most of the Vive stuff fine but ED is going to be pushing it until I get the new card.

So much this :D

I've really not set it up properly yet but the quality is better than I was expecting, thought my IPD would be an issue but it actually goes slightly higher than 73. And I really need to get it all setup in a dedicated room rather than tripping over furniture! But when you hold the controllers up and they're real! - I'm very impressed with the quality - hope ED will be good when I finally get in but I can wait for the new card if it's a let down on my old one.

If the 1070 aftermarket cards from MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac and EVGA match the 980Ti performance for around 300 quid no one is going to fork out for a brand new 980Ti and the second hand market prices will reflect this. I reckon we will see 980Ti hitting less than 300 quid second hand by the end of June.

Like I said the 980Ti is an awesome card but it's not going to hold its value when the new cards are released - at least on the second hand market.

Right I got approximately 5 minutes at lunch to just try the mini displayport to HDMI and it works just fine. I just managed to fire up Elite in Low VR mode, basically got a few seconds to look around and it looks amazing. Can't wait to get back to it!

Also I just looked up when I got my Radeon 7970 (or R9 200 if it wants to call itself that) and I placed the Order on the 4th of May 2012, that's a 4 year old card and it looked pretty damn good to me. Guess Horizons will suffer planet side but  it was way better than I was expecting.

Thanks to all those that talked me away from the Checkout button! [up]

Me this weekend...
