Gravity in ships, how does it work ?

I hope that ships will ONLY have gravity when they are docked somewhere with some form of gravity! No gravitic hull plating please! Magnetic shoes are fine.

Space legs will be sooo much more fun with varying gravity and no gravity situations! I think everyones suits should have tiny thrusters and magnetic boots.

I can't wait for this kind of thing! Frontier, forget planetary landings for a while and do this first!

Artificial gravity could work, scientifically. I don't mean by centrifugal force, but that would probably be best for such massive structures as the power requirements would likely be prohibitive. I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of a torsion field or some such. Maybe a some kind of rotating magnatron that surrounds the ship. Or some kind of projectors on the walls (bulkheads) of the ship that create a gravity field. I think the reason why such isn't in the game is that we've no evidence such would work. We do have at least a plausible theory concerning an FTL drive. We don't have a compact enough power source to actually make it work, as yet, but I'm sure that will come.

We'd die of anemia. They've levitated a frog in the Netherlands but I'm pretty sure I can predict the long-term effects of living inside a magnet. The magnetic field required to recreate this artificial gravity would be so great that the ferromagnetic materials in your body would be pulled outwards and away from your organs, leading to a terribly slow and tragic death of internal suffocation and organ failure...

lol :)

But if you combine that with genetic manipulation as stipulated above, then maybe.
But only after we will have decimated 99% of the population by some Terminator-type event because we tried to achieve this through robotics and artificial intelligence decades before.

lol :)

Explaining the current lack of robots I've noticed around in the Elite Universe.

See? Everything's still cohesive.

P.s. Thanks, 't was very interesting to 'sort of' catch up on these subjects!

Found some more info: Some research on how power-lines can affect the blood-stream. It would make a very interesting research indeed![h=1]Biological and Health Effects from Exposure to Power-line Frequency ...[/h]edited by Hiraku Takebe

Why do they stick to zero-G ? Because of one little, tiny, minimal plot hole when it comes to AG : if you can mess up with a fundamental force of the universe such as gravity so much that you can practically generate instant 1G everywhere, why would you use this kind of tech just for AG ?
You could imagine some kind of Gravity-based superweapon, why would something like not be used everywhere ? Or hell, why would we be bothered by low gravity driving in SRVs, when you can generate 1G attraction under said SRV to stabilize it ? Or why wouldn't we use this kind of tech to move ships, generating gravity ahead of said ship to move it, instead of using costly and heat generating fusion drives ?

You get the idea, and that's only some examples on why they chose not to up one of the most basic principles of the universe and be a little imaginative... Because as a wise man once said : "If it's easy, it's not funny..."

On a side note, telepresence and instant communications without range limitations are not unrealistic, as far as our current understanding of quantum magnets go... The ONLY issue with this, is that data delivery missions and the impossibility to buy system data from afar now makes no more sense... Is that THIS bad for everyone to whine about it 24/7 ?

Because basically you would end up with a clone of the Honor Harrington novels.

And because the AG cliche is so abused in SF that not using it means you are original!

Part of the planning for manned missions is to avoid radiation hazards.

But, Elite lets you scoop fuel within light-seconds of a sun, and not melt, or get irradiated. Shields? Same.

Every last bit of this argument is over keeping the old game's mechanic of making you suffer.
