Green Lights, some people need to be told...

NPCs go right down the middle (really slowly), then stop and flip on their side just inside the entrance, then kind of float sideways to their landing pad. If not, explode inside the entrance and spew debris everywhere. I've also seen a few get blown up by the station guns for whatever reason :p

That is a NPC using a docking computer as when I had one on my hauler it did the exact same thing.

Mind you the original DC also behaved pretty erratically at times so no change there.

Plus, some of the stations have the inner ring of lights half red and half white - the red half on the green-lit side and the white half on the red-lit side. So in addition to traffic lights, some stations have set up their exterior lights like traffic reflectors. I think it's pretty clear what the intention was.

Americans do everything backwards compared to the UK.

The rest of Europe does most things backwards (compared to the UK) too. ;) Until you hit the South, that is, and then it's as much a free-for-all as ED. And yes, the driving too. *shudders*

The only collision I've had with a player was when we both entered the station and were sent to landing pads that were close together, mine directly behind the other pad. The player in front went to his pad, and I flew as to go over the player to my pad and he suddenly flew up and reversed and I bumped into him.

Yah, you wouldn't think a rear view camera would be a hard ask would you? I've got one in my car. Oh well, I guess I don't have a scanner. :p

I thought that the green and red lights were like the red and green lights on a ship. One for starboard and the other for port?

You have made an incorrect assumption on what the lights mean.

The actually are port/starboard lights, so you enter the station with the correct orientations. They are not go/stop lights.

IF that was true, then the colors wouldn't be reversed on the other side of the slot. Also, the ads wouldn't be upside down when entering the station.

I know its probably a bizarre idea but perhaps the station designers should have considered a separate entrance and exit for stations, though I dont want to be too controversial here (having played the original game..)

Actually I quite enjoy the mayhem :)

The other end of the station is valuable real estate. It provides a location for the stations's fusion reactor, zero-g manufacturing, and anything else that would benefit from a zero-g environment. In addition, it provides a place for future expansions, since as the orbis station demonstrates, additions are placed along the axis of rotation.

There's no up/down/left/right/port/starboard when you're heading into a rotating object and plan to move in any of 360 degrees of directions once you're inside.

What there is is a slot with a green side and a red side. These colours (colors to our American cousins) are reversed when looking out from within. If everyone always keeps to the green side, then rude AI, arrogant DCs, and jumbos aside, we're more likely to have less crashes.

Hot going full speed or boosting helps too.

This.

Except the full throttle and boosting thing. I know it looks cool, and everyone's impatient, but we'd get less crashes if we're going slow enough to react to what we see with our eyes, and on our scanner.

Most of the time the NPC's are doing barrel rolls inside the docking slot or something equally mad,

Players are usually trying the same and failing.

Ok guys, now I'm totally confused. I also thought I should enter/exit on the green side. So the green should be on my right then, and just look for a safe side when approaching the letterbox?

Your first thought is actually correct - enter on the green side.

People claiming that green should be on the left or the right or the port or starboard or whatever are actually all Khan. They have not grasped the 3rd dimension enough to realize that these ships can fly upside down. Hell, they can fly sideways.

Not that trying to stay on the left side is that useful - the NPCs don't do it and the magnetic fields push you into the middle anyway.

Just buy a lot of guns and stay on whatever damn side you want.

Yup. They're not stop/go lights. Nor are they port/starboard lights. If you need a real-world analogy they're channel markers, the same as the red & green lights on either side of a shipping channel to/from a harbour. Stay between the lights and you're fine, go outside the lights and you run aground.

Except the full throttle and boosting thing. I know it looks cool, and everyone's impatient, but we'd get less crashes if we're going slow enough to react to what we see with our eyes, and on our scanner.

Yah... while it potentially clears the space lanes a little clearer, it also prevents you avoiding ships that suddenly appear in your path and guarantees that both parties will be damaged/destroyed if you do run into someone. Use your scanner, use your eyes, turn on your ship's lights so you can be seen more easily, and don't be afraid to give way to someone else coming the other way. The only time you should even think about boosting is once you're exiting the "toast rack" into clear space.
