Engineers Guide: Fast way to find Occupied Escape Pods near Colonia

Here’s a tip if you are looking for Occupied Escape Pods to unlock Etienne Dorn in the Los system. It’s a fast way to collect them.

1:
Equip your ship with a Hatch Breaker Limpet Controller, a Collector Limpet Controller and a good number of limpets. I bought 60.

2: Go to the Luchtaine system near Colonia. When you are there head for the A 1 Gas Giant.

3: When you are within 1000 ls you’ll spot a Distress Call in the Nav Panel. Head for it and drop out of Supercruise when you are close enough. (Changes were made in 3.3, and if you don’t see the Distress Call try using the DSS to probe planet 1).

4: You’ll immediately spot a large Megaship. You’ll also spot a number of ships flying around, and they may be pirates and hostile. Fight them if necessary or go into Supercruise and drop again and hope you have better luck this time. Often you’ll only meet rescue ships.

5: Approach the Megaship. It’s badly damaged, inoperable and decommissioned. What you are about to do isn’t illegal here.

6: Target the Megaship and scan it with your Data Link Scanner and head for “Escape Hatch 3” under “Contacts”. When you are close enough you can use your Data Link Scanner again which will reveal a “Limpet Docking Point” under “Sub-targets”. Target the “Limpet Docking Point” and release a Hatch Breaker Limpet.

7: When the hatch doors open a good number of things will be blasted into space, and among them most likely some Occupied Escape Pods for you to collect with your Collector Limpets.

8: While your limpets are collecting you can target the “Limpet Docking Point” again and open the doors again with the Hatch Breaker Limpets. More pods will be ejected. You can do this a number of times.

I got 17 Occupied Escape Pods on my first try. More will spawn if you leave and return.

You may have to move your ship around to let the limpets get the pods without getting destroyed, and some of the pods may be trapped within the graphics and be unable to reach. You may also find a few in the Cargo Bays on the Megaship.

Hope this helps some of you. Sure beats the loooooooooong time it will take to collect Occupied Escape Pods on planets or in USS’ :D.

Have fun (y)
Nice Clipper! Lovely ship. Great tip too. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for this thread. I came to Colonia to unlock these engineers and get some additional blueprints pinned. When I saw that Dorn wanted 25 escape pods I was ready to accept not unlocking him. Trying to find them through the normal channels would have been too tedious for me. But I found this thread and just got it done using this method. The third screenshot in the OP is awesome by the way, a beautiful image. Thanks again!

This guide in concise and precise. I however, am not :)

As C64Fan noted, you may need to leave the instance a few times to reset it to grab enough pods. I did this a few times and on the last one, just enough pods were ejected to get me to 25 exactly. However, this final escape pod was seemingly caught up on the hatch. The limpets couldn't reach it and just kept circling. I moved in close for a look to see if I could scoop it up manually. There are a few antennae type things sticking out around the hatch though, which prevented me from wedging the ship in there.

Needing just this last pod I came up with the brilliant idea of giving it a burst with the guns, maybe sending it spinning away to where the limpets or I could scoop it up. As soon as I opened fire though I became wanted and the cargo ship started lobbing missiles at my Krait. Not my finest moment. I quickly fumbled the cargo scoop closed and boosted away. Flew back to Jaques to pay off the fine and returned to grab another load of escape pods, turning in the excess at Jaques SAR.

A colorful image of my Krait looking for a way to grab the last pod, moments before deciding opening fire was a good idea

Glad I found this topic :)
26 oep's first go, emptied the three cargo bays too, plus a load of salvageable canisters. No other ships around. ,👍

I was a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of doing this but I will try this method. Thanks for posting C64Fan.(y)

More overwhelmed than by the prospect of finding them randomly on planets and USS’ over a looooong period of time? ;) . The method is pretty simple actually, but I’ve made a very thorough description and I totally understand that it may not look that way. Thank you - and I am glad to help :) . Take care out there.

Thanks for that, that saved me a bunch of time ! (y)

Worked for me about 4 times in a row before the Escape hatch seemed to get a timeout.
I had to relog one time though, because it looked like all canisters and pods were ejected inside the ship and my limpets were immobilized.
Killing them with a controller power down didn't help.
Btw no ships were around when I collected the stuff.

Still works. I found it is best to keep firing hatch breaker limpets until all the OEPs are free, then fire the collectors and fill up. Otherwise it seems the collector limpets can become stuck in a state of waiting for a pod still in the hold to become free. It seems it takes 2 or 3 HBLs to fully open the cargo hold.

I’m on XB1, so I’m not sure if this applies to the PC version, but I found a much faster way to get Occupied Escape Pods, on my way to Ram Tah tonight. Ram Tahs base is in the Meene system. In orbit around his planet were 4 Salvageable Wreckage sites. Each one contained 5 Occupied Escape Pods. I picked up 20 in about 15 minutes, with my limpets. Not sure if it’s a permanent thing, but they were there tonight. Selling mine to Search and Rescue. Not ready for a 22k Ly trip yet.
Meene AB 5 C is a really good place to collect them when you're inside the bubble - there are Salvageable Wreckage sites where 5 of them float around inside a debris field. When you get there first there might spawn a hostile NPC but system security forces will spawn soon too. Get close to the pods, scoop them up, switch to menu, get back in the game and they'll respawn close to the ship. I'll get some more to put them in my carrier cargo hold (mainly for roleplaying reasons - I like the idea of keeping a replacement crew in cryostasis ;)).

Still works like a charm. I can't believe I thought I could farm them from USS's. Barely took 10 minutes. Thank you so much!

Nice guide. I just farmed the 25 occupied escape pods from the SRV wreckage site not far from the crashed "Bug Killer" Anaconda. Loaded onto my fleet carrier to be transported to Colonia soon.

You’re welcome everyone, and I am glad that it still works :D.

But to some of you: Bear in mind that the title says “....near Colonia”, and the reason being that Etienne Dorn is in that region.
