[GUIDE] How to Improve Elite's Graphics with Mods and Tweaks...

I gave SweetFX a try yesterday. First time I tried it I got a blank screen, and this was downloaded from Guru3D. I then noticed the other version under the download section in the linked post, and that worked for me.

I haven't really done anything addiational with anti-aliasing yet, but have you tried modifiying it through the Nvidia control panel? This guide looks like it should cover what you need: http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_...]http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/149/?

The music is "Digital Goddess" from Sonicfire.

reshade crashes the game at the optimising shaders

Seems the button to turn on and off doesn't work for me, but I tried Reshade with sweetfx2 and it made all the stuttering issues come back, so sadly a no go from me. Unless someone's been experimenting with it and have a solution?

+1 rep for you, Granite! The EDFX mod from nexus is a game changer for me. Had trouble with the sweetfx tweaks. EDFX is exactly what I was looking for. tyvm

Thank you, Granite!

Here are a couple more graphics tweaks:

In the same directory as GraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml (X:\Computer\Users\"yousirormaam"\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics), the settings.xml file contains the Field of View value FOV, which makes the cockpit zoom in and out; too much gives you a fish-eye quality. I set mine to 70 (normally at 60, I think).

Also in that directory, in the Custom.fxcfg file there is a value for LODDistanceScale; I set mine to 2.000, stops that annoying "bay appears suddenly in front of you when docking in a hub" problem everyone complains about. (Remember AppData is normally hidden so turn on 'hidden items' in Explorer's 'view' dropdown to see it)

Don't forget to back up your files first!

Enjoy!

A little tweak I found that lets you tweak the brightness for the surrounding milky way nebula.

OpenGraphicsConfiguration.xml
Look for
<LocalDustBrightness>0.0</LocalDustBrightness>
and set it to
<LocalDustBrightness>1.0</LocalDustBrightness>

Best setting IMO is 0.3.

Going back to the OP, I've altered my Planets texture size but I'm seeing no difference in game (yes I made sure I changed Ultra and I changed High just in case), is this "broken" with 1.3? can anybody confirm it's working please, I've tested and simply don't see a difference :(

I don't see a difference either
I stopped using SweetFX also and other mods , i found that it only makes things worse instead of better :)

Definitely working for me.

@Anopheles I5 is fine, overclock if you are using a K series, it's only your GPU that is letting you down.

It works for me and all I did was edit the config file as described, I didn't have to enable anything anywhere else. I increased the planet texture size to 16384 and the GalaxyBackground texture size to 4096.

Under the <Environment> section I also increased these settings to 4:

<Ultra>
<LocalisationName>$QUALITY_ULTRA;</LocalisationName>
<Item>
<Feature>GalaxyBackground</Feature>
<QualitySetting>4</QualitySetting>
</Item>
<Item>
<Feature>Planets</Feature>
<QualitySetting>4</QualitySetting>
</Item>
<Item>
<Feature>DamageDecals</Feature>
<QualitySetting>4</QualitySetting>
</Item>
</Ultra>

I don't know if changing those settings beyond 3 did anything but the bigger textures definitely made a huge difference. I run ED in 2560x1440 with V-sync enabled and I get rock-solid 60fps except for a ~2sec stutter when entering hyperspace. I can live with that because the visuals are spectacular and there is no other hit to performance.

I have a pair of HD7970s, an i7-4790K and ED runs off a striped pair of SSDs. Your mileage may vary.

.

Can someone confirm that changing these variables actually do something in-game, please.
I don't see any difference and I don't experience any impact on fps as well.

Is this worth it for a mid table set up(i5 4series processor and gtx650 card)?

I have an i5 4570k myself but the gpu is an Radeon R280X, so might be a bit more powerful then yours, can never tell. But neither really mind tuning up Elite with a SweetFX profile, the FPS doesn't seem to be impacted at all. Not sure about the other graphical tweaks, would have to do some testing, but I'd say it's more what your GPU can take then the CPU.
