Guide / Tutorial Guide To Missions

I have a question concerning bounty hunting type missions.

When you're just starting out, you don't have any fancy equipment, but really want to do some bounty hunting type missions because they pay good. How do you actually get to fire on ships if all you can do is approach them in frameshift speeds and cannot deploy weapons and have no way to force them out of FTL drive?

I'm currently facing that dilemma. No interdiction drive, no warrant scanner...just the starter ship with a pair of pulse lasers and the basic equipment. I've never been able to complete a bounty hunting mission mainly because I cannot force the targets out of frame shift drive. Suggestions?

Get an interdictor! its the only way in supercruise :)

I have done some research on this, but I feel I may have a different problem than others.

I was progressing in Federation military, doing those simple early missions. I got the Sol invitation thing. Accepted it, new Sol invitation messages started to pop up, ignored them and was just doing what I liked - some trading, bounty hunting etc. but had no intention to travel to Sol. After some time (a week or two after first getting the invitation) I went to Sol. Nothing happened when I visited stations there. So I started looking for info here and there, turns out the wording of this 'mission' is inaccurate, this is supposed to be only a reward, not an actual mission. I should be getting new missions soon. Fine.

The thing is, a month or so has passed and I haven't got a single Fed mission. I have visited numerous Fed systems, completed some missions for Fed factions. The Sol thing disappeared from my "transactions" (IIRC it was there for some time, I may be wrong though), bulletin boards still have the Sol invitation as unobtainable mission. I get no new Fed missions though.

I sold a lot of exploration data to Fed factions, I got "allied" status with them, I am welcomed by Fed stations by something like "welcome trusted ally". I accidentally noticed I have got 2 more system permits - Beta Hydri and PLX something - but never got any news/update about these permits, like I had with Sol. From what I read they are given for higher ranks than Midshipman yet I am stuck at midshipman since before that Sol invitation first appeared.

Is this some sort of bug, do I need to do something to start receiving missions again?

On a sidenote, I have visited some Imperial systems recently but never saw any missions for their military offered.

Will the transaction page do a live update and tell you how many pirates you have killed, or how many kills remain to complete the mission?

Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, this will live update with an 'X remaining' entry on the transactions tab.

You'll need to do more missions with Imperial to get the missions, generally you'll have to at least be friendly with a system before those missions will begin to appear.

Hi all
I have taken two Kill Trader missions but just cant seem to record any kills for traders and ran out of time.... the kill pirate missions is fine but traders don't come off my count any idea if its a bug?

Many thanks

I just started playing about a week ago, and I need a little bit of intermediate help on the bounty hunting missions if you don't mind.

At first I found the "WARZONE" targets to be my favorite. As long as I could find a conflict zone in the system that the mission is located in. When there is no conflict zone in the system, who exactly is the target? Is there any way to accomplish this kind of mission, sans conflict zone, without incurring a bounty? I'm trying my best to stay on the right side of the law here. Thanks in advance.

You may have taken the mission at the exact time the civil war ended - in this case, you'll not have any Combat zones in the targetted system.

Otherwise, you should know that the Warzones only appear in your list when you're close enough of them (I don't know how "enough" is computed). For example, while exploring, I found a warzone around a sun distant from more than 150K Ls from landing sun, so the Combat zone were not visible when I reached the system!

To know for sure if there's a Civil war in a system you're in, open the right window (bound to key "4" by default), and use the arrow keys to scroll among the different factions. If 2 of them are in a "Civil war" state... You have some Combat zones around: Otherwise, no warzones.

The thing about that is I keep getting the same missions for warzone targets in the same system. They're coming up a ton, and I'm passing up some good money if there actually is a warzone there. I didn't know that warzones could be around stars though. There is a second star that I may have overlooked because I assumed that warzones only spawned near stations or outposts. I also forgot to check the page that shows the different factions in the area. That is a great idea, and will certainly help me out in the future when trying to locate a new zone to fight in. Thanks :)

I was just wondering- sometimes I read a mission text that asks me to kill traders.

That is going to be files by Authority as Piracy, right?
I mean, I just have to find a transport ship and blow it up? That's cold... :/

Pictures

I don't know if somebody has mentioned this or if you have plans to do it. But could you add visual adds? ex. pictures for the mission types. Because when I first found your guide I was extremely happy that somebody made such a awesome guide to help beginners with the game. But when I first start to go through the guide it took me a while to find the mission I was needing help with (assassination). I just think that having pictures of the mission types will help people who are starting the game for the first time a lot more and make it easier for them to find the help that they are looking for. Though it is an amazing guide, if you want me to even get the pictures for you, I will be more then happy to help knowing I have help such a great useful become even greater! :):)

Yes, I'm sorry that I haven't put more in. If you have some that you feel would be helpful please feel free to send them and I'll include a credit for any I use. I'll try and make updating the guide and including more pictures a priority for this week.

How do you want me to send them to you? Via PM or did you want to give me your email?

OMG, thank you for this. I was trying to figure out those big anaconda kills missions and couldn't figure out what to look for in the systems and was always failing. Thanks!

Thank you for this post. I've been selecting missions based strictly on reward. I've decided to take the game for seriously. I figure that would give me more direction/purpose, thus making it more fun and immersive.

Learning about all the mission types was my first step.

Salude!

II.) Assassination Missions

Assassination missions will instruct you to kill a specific NPC, providing one or more target locations. It is important to note before attempting these that currently these are almost always Anacondas - don't get wide eyed at the mission reward and get yourself in over your head before you are ready to take one out.
Travel to the location of your choice and begin searching for Unidentified Signal Sources. Once you find and enter one check for your target. In most cases you will not find your target or anything relating to the specific mission right away and will have to search multiple Signal Sources across the listed systems. This is the most frustrating and time consuming part of the mission - Hang in there!

Eventually you will either find your target or a different ship which will update your mission information in the transactions tab. You will get a notification on your HUD that this has happened. Check your mission information as it will now either show the system where you target is located or offer you alternative rewards for abandoning the mission.

A question about these Assassination missions;
In the event an alternative reward is offered by one of the target's accomplices, the target's location remains unknown and all you get is the destination for the alternative award. Is it still possible to find the target you agreed to pursue, and if so; where would he normally be? In the same system that gave you the alternate reward, or rather in one of the two other systems?

I've had this alternative reward about 5 times now, and none of them ended up in me finding the original target. I kinda want to keep true to my promise to take down evil Anaconda overlords in stead of whimping out for around 17k credits. So any suggestions will be most welcome!

Cheers!

There is a known bug with assassination missions that is supposed to be fixed with the next update. Currently, when you are given a counter offer before you are given the target's actual location then you will be unable to complete the mission the original way. Here's the sequence as it is supposed to happen...

1) Accept Mission
2) NPC, likely a trader, gives you the location of the target. Usually saying something along the lines of, "I just escaped with my life".
3) NPC, accomplice of target, gives you counter offer.
4) Target found

These events can happen out of order though. It is entirely possible to encounter the target before ever receiving the location or a counter offer. The key here is that if you receive the counter offer first, then the mission will be impossible to complete.

"coff" hmmm why are the "current" comment dates from 2014 if it's an update? nvr mind I see said the blind man to the deaf son as he pick up his hammer an saw....:D

Well then, many thanks for your reply! This will save me a ton of time searching for targets that don't exist!
I'll probably just abandon the missions upon receiving that counter offer then in the future.

Revise Pirating missions.

In regards to piracy missions. I have been doing some trial and error and I had a epiphany this morning.

So far I have been doing the following with very low luck.

Randomly going to USS, nav points or resource extraction sites.
Various forums have pointed to me to camping the above locations in systems that are importing this resource.
Various attempts to go to systems that are exporting this resource and interdicting various ships with low luck.

What my epiphany was.

It made no sense to me that I was having so much trouble finding the resource I need in systems that are major exporters.

So my tips would be

A) camp outside a major starport in that system and cargo scan all ships that are "leaving the starport" as most incoming will not be carrying the goods you would like.
Once they leave, follow them and wake scan their frame shift wake. Once scanned you should be able to FSJ on their scan, locate and pirate the goods that you need from them.
I have yet to test this as I had to leave for work before I could follow through this morning. It took me about 10 minutes to find a ship with the goods I needed. I attempted to follow him without a wake shift scanner (IE orientating to his scan and clicking on systems until on lined up) but could not find the npc on the other locations. I have read so far that finding the same npc will only really work if you jump off the scanned wake (not scanning and manually selecting the system in which they have jumped to).

B) Interdict ships leaving the exporting system as they will more likely contain the item you are looking for.
