Had the urge to play elite dangerous

Got a spiffy new wireless headset, a new i7 8700, i could very likely find one or two of my old in game friends to wing up with.
Hey sounds like fun, right?

And then i remembered that one of the last things i had done before quitting last time was buy a new federal corvette.
A new federal corvette that needs to be engineered.
After remember the process of engineering my FDL, python and the shields and FSD on my type-9, i decided to do something else.

This is pretty much my typical elite dangerous play session for the last few months and as long as i remember what a pita the engineers are, im not likely to get sucked in again.

I am prone to obsessive behaviour, so FD, thank you for the engineers.

Sounds like you have already unlocked the engineers you need. So it shouln't be that much of a pain.
Besides, don't rush it. Do what you want to do in the game, and pick up materials/data along the way.

Sometimes the mere thought of doing a task is actually worse than the actual doing of said task. I understand though, if you don't have all the mats you need to engineer your ships, the simple idea of gathering them is just too much. And flying unengineered is to me, like flying naked, so I understand. However, you might take a peek again at ED. Do it little by little? A corvette is an absolute beast engineered......

As Shreddog said: if you rush it, it'll still be the pain it formerly was. If you are in a hurry, you still "need" to search HGEs. But if you take your time, perhaps even invest in a small collector limpet controller and a cargo rack, you can get piles of materials while just fighting in a RES or CZ. (And data you also get automatically, simply by targeting ships. ) The materials thus come in "for free" there. When you have plenty, visit a material trader and get what you actually need. Conversion rates might seem bad, but as long as the stuff came in "almost for free", it's still a good deal.
.
Then, if you have the most important blueprints already pinned, engineering itself also is a breeze. For example when i engineered my Krait, much of the engineering was done before travling to the first engineer. And for special effects i wanted, a good deal was done in Deciat. Even if an engineer can only do low grade upgrades, he can still do special effects. So my Kraits G5 DD thrusters with drag drives never went even close to Maija yet.
.
Unlocking Engineers can still be a pain. But once you have that done, the process isn't as bad any more as it formerly was. Also note that any engineering actually is an upgrade, the stupid lottery is no more. So as long as you don't want to hurry it and press yourself into HGE hunting, it's really not that bad any more.
.
Mind you, i still believe that the power creep of engineers is way over the top. A lot of balancing still should be done there. But most of the process of getting equipment engineered by now is in a good state, not the mess any more which it formerly was.
.

I haven't bought any new ships since the new engineers, since I haven't finished re-engineering all my existing ships yet. I promised myself, no getting sidetracked with new projects while I've got a fleet sitting.

eventually I'll get around to trying one of the alliance ships or a krait.

Meh, is that all that's holding you back? Did you sell the other ships? Why?

Yes, engineering is a pain. I hate it now when you do engineer something and find out it won't work the way you want it too so you have to redo it all again. But, whetever. Believe it or not, I acually rode around in an unengineered Krait for a couple of days. Amazing, I know. Silly me.

[rolleyes]

No modules lying around that you could reuse ?
Anyway you dont have to get everything to grade 5 in 5 mins - if you've already engineered a Python then it shouldn't take more than an hour to engineer the Corvette enough to be interesting (and that's including lifting materials from Dav's hope). Grade 2 or 3 will do for most stuff - and I bet you can take at least weapons of the Python.
Being able to pin blueprints and material traders take a lot of the worse slog out - I'll often start to engineer a weapon or module just to see if it will work as I hope, and some things are actually best left at lower teir anyway as the tradeoffs aren't always worth it - eg moving around resistances on shields that sort of thing.

Might I suggest that you find something else to obsess over then?

Ther are several in-game avenues to explore this aspect of your personality. If you don't wish to do that, there are other games.

I rarely find a need to max anything out in Elite, though I do usually pop by Elvira's shop for a bit of tuning first thing when I fit out a new ship.

I saw some people using a 'vette with long range gimbaled beam lasers to farm pirates in a HazRES and I can't imagine how that is any fun at all.

Maybe you should actually run the 'vette for a while before you decide what needs done to it rather than theorycrafting based on (usually terrible) suggestions from the community.

With the loadout i have the power plant needs to be engineered before i can even turn everything on. After that the non optional FSD and shield engineering, and while i do have some weapons i can swap out from other ships i dont have a complete weapon loadout without engineering.

Its worthless as a trade ship and too much drudgery to engineer, im content to wait. Maybe X4 will be released soon.

I'm guessing you don't have Guardian tech unlocked ?
I don't bother engineering powerplants or distributors at all these days - Guardian does the trick and the frame shift booster is good for Corvette as well of course.
Oh and congrats on the new I7 btw -not long updated to a new Ryzen myself - holding off on a new video card till I see how the new Nvidia cards turn out.

Pulse lasers and multicannons exist for a reason, bro. Stop theorycrafting and try to make do with what you have available.

I sort of liked unlocking most of the engineers. It got me to do things I wouldn’t otherwise do, like mining. Now flying 5000 light years from my starting point for Palin sounds like a chore, but so far it is the only one I’ve really found daunting.

Black tea, no contaminants, is the only correct answer. ;)

I'm afraid I'll have to go with milk and two sugars - standard British workman tea - Civilisation as we know it in the British Isles would collapse without that.
