You can but you will be transferred to a prison ship in a different system. If you go to an interstellar factor you will be able to just pay the fine without having to go to penal colony in the process. however if you don't know where the nearest interstellar factor is you're probably just better off going to the penal colony. it's usually only a few jumps away

Because if you received the bounty in that system, and there isn't an interstellar factor available, you would have to go to the authority contact at which point you will be sent to prison which is inconvenient. The easiest system to do this is CD-33 8748 at Viktorenko Holdings station which is only 16 ly from Shinrarta.

The option is in red. I've paid 200CR bounties before, went to prison.

Not sure then. I've never been sent to prison when paying a bounty at an interstellar factor. Possible bug, but don't know for sure.

As stated elsewhere notoriety, to get that down to zero where the IF and other options are available play the game for two hours per point of notoriety.

Alternatively if you are in a cheap ship hang around a station controlled by the faction that put the bounty on you and wait for their security to destroy your ship and send you to jail, this is a bad alternative but some people have limited game time so this would be quicker.

Yeah we all know how that happens. That System Authority Anaconda was in a wrong place at a wrong time. Indeed they were looking at you funny. Or perhaps that Navy interdiction happened at a really bad time, and someone had to pay for it. Slaves, Landmines and AI Relics won't move themselves you know. When things get too heated up, like totally spiralling out of control, it's usually best to hang around in low security or anarchy systems for a while, to get things sorted out.

How do I check notoriety?

I went to this system. Still cant pay. Notoriety is at 1.

Correct. Once your notoriety hits 0, then you will be able to pay off the bounty. Its 2 hours of in game play to remove 1 point of notoriety.

As stated already, if you have notoriety other than 0 then you can't pay it off until you get your notoriety down to zero - then you can pay it off at IF. Until then you have 2 choices - prison if you hand yourself in or stay 'on the run' (good luck with that).
