Hang on...what happened to shields?

If they keep targeting the "Niche" market they will go broke. I fly the dcs world with my warthog. When i want hardcore simulation i go to a simulation game.

Actually, I would suggest that if they DON'T keep targeting the Niche market they will go broke. SC is not the only other space game on the horizon, and several of the big names in the gaming industry are supposedly looking into or actively working on space games. I don't believe that FD can compete directly with big name, big budget productions in the mainstream arena. However, by sticking to a Niche market (well more like a group of niche markets) but still making a game not too far off the mainstream, FD will bypass the competition and stay in business.

There are other games targeted at the same "niche" markets, but they are small indie titles, without the budget, quality or production values of Elite.

uhmm brother this is a sim game....might like to check the category again...FPS shooter and eve its not. but maybe you didn't play the original iterations of this...and doubt very seriously they would go broke in the space sim market....might be smaller than the mainstream stuff but it is still viable for cash cropping...you think SC got funded by enlarge a crowd that had no idea what a space sim was??? aside from what was that game that came out a while back in the X series...had nothing out there cept modded games like freelancer(which really wasn't a sim) and freespace(another fun ware game)...tbh this game is no where near as hard as the originals where...and making money was even harder there. they have dumbed down ED a lot for the masses that have no idea how tough a space sim could be (that is not to say it isn't fun, but rather it doesn't need to be made any easier)...trust me when I say you had to struggle to even keep your cobra up to snuff without running out of cash at one point.

Don't worry though...anytime there is a game that works off the feed back rather than the vision...it gets changed to suit the masses and what could have been a stand out tends to go the way of mediocrity...I know, I know we all have our opinions and everyone screams that the minority screams the loudest...its funny though...I feel like I am one of the minority and I don't scream or rant at all.

If something comes out that suits my "flying" jones in space with additional pew, pew and unending game...I would probably play it and not give a damn one wit on how some not all want to butcher ED to fit a play style that originally ED was never intended for.

a personal opinion only and only that- if someone doesn't want to play a hardcore space sim...then don't try to change one that has been in the past...obviously they had done enough right to make 3 iterations of this game before this and sales where good enough to have warranted that...and this was from 84 thru the 90's....at the peek of space sim games...it fell on in the early 2000's and pretty much about died except for a few titles the x series (which not sure if it qualifies) and evechron...and 2 others I can't recall at this time(not that there might not have been some additional)....just go back to the history of these forums...look at the massive posting that came when people started asking about game controllers and you will see that many didn't even know what HOTAS was much less how intuitive a joystick was for this game...wanted mouse and pad controls...this alone shows a trend away from the sims.

yes a few people still know DCS and other titles such as yourself....this is also suppose to be a sim just not one that is limited to a planet.

a side note...I loved being in the world of dsc...hated the immersion break of the loading screens and stuff...that is one game that needs a rework in my humble opinion to not drop to windows while loading ...keep a person in the game somehow...when someone is jonesin to be a armchair pilot they don't like to see those kinda breaks...completely off topic lol...anyhow cheers my friend...me and my wall post lol.

Well said.

Anyone remember WarBirds?

There were no armor buffs, no shield cells, no gimbals. No docking computer.

If you wanted more armor, or more speed, or to dance around the sky - you had to learn to fly that particular plane. And sacrifice something else. You could have the speed of the P51, or the maneuverability of the Zero, but not both.

True multiplayer, inside a B52, each member manning a gun, with a wing supporting you - all in a coordinated bombing run, to capture a new territory. You couldn't just jump to a new system when a 109 was tearing you apart, you had to fly or fight your way out, or die. You picked your battles carefully. Ramming was avoided at all cost, not a tactic encouraged with PIP management. Pilots didn't combat log, they respected each other for the kills they dished out, and the kills that took them out of the sky. And none of it was "twitch FPS".

Good times.

Thank you, Reaper, for a well worded response. Duly +1'd

actually do recall warbirds...used to fly it with my dad before he passed a number of years ago...we flew in the janes sims to...those were a hoot to. had to really work hard for the kills. some good pilots out there...wasn't an easy sim either...figuring out how to get off the ground was challenging enough to start...then you had stalls, red outs blackouts, absolutely no shields...not that I don't like shields...we are in the future ya know...but truth there was no combat logging...maybe disconnects due to errors...but most of the time if the guy was disconnected...they'd be back with a big apology and would own up to getting thrashed...lot less griefing and :):):):):) talk back then...more respect for everyone...even the newbies...there was always a squadron willing to take on the new guys to help em out....good times...would have to take the toys away from a lot here to get that kind of gameplay back, not here in the forums but you get the drift...its not so much that you shot someone down or they shot you down...but the sportsmanship and mutual respect given ...even to the fallen...that some not all do not carry into to ED...on the otherhand...I've met a good number of great pilots out in the black that always get a friendly wave when I see em...its a game true, but any public interaction should be respectful in my lowly opinion...and griefing or disrespect shows either a lack of proper upbringing or something one should actually be ashamed of doing as it reflects ones character...RPing ...well that's completely another topic and very grey shades...also seems this post went way off topic...so grampy shuttin up ya onrey pups!!:)

Peace and prosperity by any means!!

OK, so I take my new 1.5 Vulture out for a spin, drop into a USS, and my shields are promptly shredded by a couple of NPC Cobras.

I don't mean "they outflew me" - I mean in a couple of passes, they'd practically taken my shields out completely, whereas exactly the same amount of hits yesterday would barely have taken half a ring away. Same against a pair of Vipers.

Also...my A4 shield cell barely even managed to fill one ring of my shields - less than a third of the 1.4 refill - whereas (to my understanding) they're supposed to be filling twice the amount of shield energy (ie same power output, twice the active time).

Now, I know I haven't played since beta 2, but I'm fairly sure there was nothing in the patch notes about reducing the Vulture's shields to paper thickness.

Is it just me? Did I miss something significant in the patch notes? Or is this a punishment for not buying Horizons?

To be honest I am still taking down Anacondas and FDLs (npc) in my Imperial Courier without problems and my shields are holding. The only thing I have had to change is how I use the SCB.

I want to rep this so unbelievably bad, but unfortunately I'm browsing the forums on a mobile device. :(

Yep. Also had a lot of fun in AirWarrior 3 on the Full Realism server. Flying a fully crewed B-17 was a thing of absolute beauty and pretty damned intimidating to all but the best pilots. Az land for life. :) I generally don't see that in games now days. Instead of embracing that an A6M2 Zero's wings rip off at high Gs and is no match for an energy fighter using energy tactics, they want to whine about nerfs and balance. There was no balance beyond using your strength against your enemy's weakness. That was the whole point and what made these games so fun. I'm sure the British were whining about nerfs when the Luftwaffe would lure them into negative G dives during the Battle of Britain.

I remember those days....Played Warbirds 1.0-2.0(Did you ever see Godzilla standing in the water?) ,Fighter Ace,CFS1,CFS2,CFS3,and just about every other Flight/Combat sim ever made(Even Flew a real USAF F-4 Simulator anyway, pilots then did show more respect to one another. How many times have you seen someone who was just shot down say GK(Good Kill) and the person who shot them down say: GF(Good Fight) Followed by a ~S~(Salute)? Yep, how times have changed in the gaming world but, because I'm old school and old world when I come into a system and start talking, I give all the CMDRs within "chat shot" a hearty ~S~ CMDR's Well I've said my two cents worth and to all here ~S~.

There are other games targeted at the same "niche" markets, but they are small indie titles, without the budget, quality or production values of Elite.

ED, by being the pure virtue of being the first among equals, has already guarantee it's market share and created it's client base.

It try to go niche or not, that point is not important, because all the other games now (especially SC) has to play catch up because they are so far behind release at this stage.

This has been proven to be true if you look at other industries - just like at car industry for example. Toyota's GT86 has been absolutely killing it in it's space and now every other car manufacturer is playing catch-up.

When you create the market, you become trend setter. Majority of client base are fine with minor shifts in gameplay, as long it doesn't detract from it's main genre (ED's genre is space strategy simulation. Space combat is only 1 component of the overall experience, changing how SCB work isn't going to impact what the game is about overall).

This is, not to mention, FD have been open and reasonable with it's changes so far.
