Just a suggestion.

1 So people talk about what type of computer setup they will have when Elite dangerous is released.
2 What spec. we might need for elite Dangerous.
3 If you want to build a system you can get suggestion on what you should and should not buy.

Well trying to collect all the topics that deal with hardware. The mods can use this as a starting point. (Note Not adding Founders page Yet. I will make a Topic on Founders forums to collect all hardware info.

There are a few threads spread out over several forums that talk about hardware. It would make sense to put them all together in one forum. There seem to be quite a few people looking at upgrading/replacing their systems for E: D and I think most of us would appreciate any good advice.

No substitute for an informed buyer. Do your home work or go to someone you trust. The user review on newegg are a good place to start...But some people are idiots...so take it with a grain of salt.

Anandtech covers SSD reviews and this case. It's very quiet.
HardOCP and Guru3d cover the rest

Unless you need 3D or specifically PhysX I would choose ATI/AMD over nVidia VGA cards...

If you got more dough get an i7 CPU

If you are cutting corners. Buy local and have it (mobo/cpu/ram) POSTed at the store. Most prebuilt store system are S#%*!

Can we ask a mod to find out exactly what spec Frontiers computers are that their actually testing the game on...

What better spec to go for :)

Trying to be polite but that's a bad idea.

Most games during the initial stages of development are built on beast machines as devs don't like waiting for things (waste of time). Nearer completion many parts of the game tend to be re-written and optimised thus reducing the requirements needed to run the game.

In all honesty I would stop stressing about what hardware is needed for ED until ED is released (or very near to it) .. why ?

(a) The power of hardware increases the longer you wait
(b) Prices over time tend to drop
(c) You will get better value for money if you wait

If you can't wait as you have money to burn there are a lot of us here who could build you a spec as there are only a few obvious choices for a gaming rig :)

I agree that most prebuilt systems suck - they always use the cheapest available parts so you end up with a mobo you've never heard of in a case you can get for a tenner.

if you are getting the PC build for you/building it yourself don't get conned into buying the operating system at full retail price, ask for OEM and you will get one at near half the price of retail, the only difference? fancy packaging.

To be honest if you have a pretty good rig now that plays the most up to date games well then it will probably run ED fine.....If not you could upgrade then...

Mines pretty good but when the time comes I will just see what it runs like and assess it from there

I've been putting aside around £25 a week in a building society account for a while now. Elite comes out at the same time as my car insurance/MOT/tax is due, so whatever is left over from that can go towards hardware. I might build a new rig specifically for gaming, but otherwise it'll be for a graphics card and peripherals.

You just have to find the right supplied. DinoPC are fantastic in my experience. I used to build my own machines and build for friends but now I use them instead and point friends there. If they blow a CPU during contrstruction it's no longer my problem ;) But the big deal is they use good parts and give you complete customisability over the build.

What he ^ said.

And, in addition, such things can happen during and after Alpha/Beta too so do not judge what spec will be needed even on the Alpha and Beta releases! I've played games at Beta that ran way below what I expected on the PC I had at the time... then, come release, it was all good!

Many people are saying they'll wait until Alpha/Beta... it'll give an idea but it's not guaranteed to be polished enough to be categoric (unless Frontier specifically tell us so).

Agreed - maybe swap out an item or two (which tend to be the most expensive parts ) and you should be good to go.

I have my eyes on a Titan card by NVidia .. way too expensive right now but come mid 2014 it, or something similar, should be more reasonably priced ... 4K TV's should be more reasonable too so (if it is supported) playing ED at 4K resolution will be awesome.

Well I have some questions - was going to start a thread but might as well put it in here... am hoping you peeps can help. I'm either going to build it myself or get a pre-built jobbie.

I need to have a PC always on at home for my work - other than my laptop. Been using an old XP beast which sounds like it's taking off most of the time.
Did a clean Windows install a while ago and maxed out it's RAM at 2GB but basically it's pretty much had it.

Sooo it seems to me I could get something decent that could also play the game - need to get it signed off by the boss but as that is me I don't forsee any issues there :)

Would it be sensible to try and share a machine as follows?

Work requirements - straightforward - basically anything that will run Win 7. In a virtual machine?

Gaming requirements - would it be possible to over spec it a bit so that 2 people could run two different installs of the game simultaneously - two keyboards/joystick/mouse/monitors etc?

But also be able to re-assign all resources to one user when I'm playing on my own? Is there any shared cost saving - or would the additional cost mean you might as well get a second machine?

Reading recommendations so far SSD sounds like the way to go and was thinking of two maybe three monitors.

Any advice/recommendations much appreciated..

I've never heard of running two accounts on the same machine. I'm pretty sure it would be close to impossible. Computers are very hard-coded towards single input and single program instances. I doubt even getting two keyboards working separately would be very feasible.

If you want two players you'll need two computers.

Yes I thought it might be impractical. Was gonna try and get my brother interested, but realistically not sure if his laptop would be up to it. Can't see him buying new kit..

yup, what he said^^ that's a little too much multi tasking for one pc, you will need two.

as for the rest of it the best advice i can give you is to start with a good quality motherboard and build around it.

it doesn't sound like you will need a monster rig so an i5 or a 6 core AMD will be more than enough to start you off.

if you go with AMD you get a little more headroom to upgrade later as the 4 6 & 8 core CPU's all use the same AM3+ socket, not so with Intel as the i3 & i5's use the socket 1155 while the i7 uses socket 2011.
