Has ED made you realise just how insignificant we are?

Looking at the Sun today, I suddenly realised that through playing Elite that just how insignificant we are, I suddenly realised that we are just a a mere speck in the known universe. I suddenly realised that the sun is just "not in the sky" but millions of miles away yet we (I or some) take it for granted. Just thought I would share my "self aware moment" when I realised this because I have never thought deeply as this, and this is through playing ED so thanks to the Devs and the community.

That's the feeling I wanted ED to convey, and I'm happy to see that others feel the same. There wasn't that same feeling in the original Elite, as it was basically a 3D shooter/trading game. Frontier and First Encounters had the feeling to some extent.

I think our tininess in the general scheme of things is well conveyed by Elite Dangerous!

:D S

Yep, you get a vague idea of how big our galaxy is not to mention the whole universe with its COUNTLESS galaxies.
And still the real distances between those galaxies beyond imagination of most minds.

And think again how selfish and unrealistic it is to claim that we are the only sentient beings in there.
Aand think again about all the selfish religions that claims they know about something like "god"
But as long as gives peeps a friendly direction in their lives... ok.

I totally agree ED blew my mind in terms of the spec we are in an enormous galaxy.
Then leads you to think of our Galaxy amongst the millions around us that are bigger I.e Andromeda.

I then watched a documentary that explained that even billions of galaxies clumped together is still I dot compared to millions of clumps of galaxies that make up the wider universe.

In short we are a dot in a dot in a dot In a dot in a dot in a ln an ever expanding desert we call space.

Head blown yet..... Mine hurts....

Frontier was similar in that way for me. Dangerous just takes it that extra mile using the real omniverse in such a way :)

The debate continues today, so It's rather unfriendly to claim people are selfish based on their worldview. When we make a statement like "look at how massive it is and how small we are" and then go on to make statements of absolute knowledge, it puts yourself in quite a difficult positon.

It would be great if this forum could stay accepting and open minded so we can continue to enjoy a great community within a great game.

For me personally ED has given the sense of scale to my existence, the Earth where it is in relation to the known Universe, the Sun and the billions of other stars in our own Galaxy and the billions of other Galaxies in our cosmos. Mind blowing.

Well if anything trying to understand the vastness of the universe tells you how little we actually know.
Maybe not "god" as in a spirit but "god" could be another sentient race seeded the earth.

Anything is possible lol.

It's one of the many theories.

Thargoids, obviously, though. [yesnod]

Well. If I remember right the Religious People take this as even more Evidence for the Existence of God.
Because its absolutely Impossible for them to Believe that this sort of Gigantic Thing just appeared without someone making it.
My Grandfather always Preaches to me about this. Saying that all of this is bound by Rules like Gravity and other Stuff. And that this could never have happened by Chance but must have been Made by Someone.
Someone so Powerful and Allmighty that he must be God.

Well much to his Annoyance I am not very Religious tough. And usually Prefer to Belief that there is no Higher Being Controlling all this.
I usually assume that this is just how things Are. From the Start the Idea that something that is there and which has a certain Order to it must have been Created by Someone is Fairly Human. But not really Acceptable to me.
Who Decided that something has to have been Created to be in Order. Who said something had an Order at all. Maybe the Order we have is just the Result of what happened and what survived the time before everything had an Order etc.

As for the Topics OP.
Nope. I knew most of this before Elite. i like the Topic in General. :)
But to begin with I dont think we are Insignificant. Because we are an Race which might one Day be able to actually go to all this.
We have Progressed. And we Found out alot. If we Continue to Search. We might one Day also Find a Way to either Travel Faster than Light. Or to increase our Durability to a Point of not being Stopped by a few Hundred Years of Travel.

I believe we have the Potential to actually someday leave our Solar System and maybe even one Far away Day our Galaxy.
So calling us Insignigicant is in my Eyes not Correct ;)

I really dont want to start a discussion in this direction or offend someone personally or his worldview.
English isnt my first language and I hope my comment dont come along to rude cause of the word selfish.

Stay open minded is a good advice
Just wanted to give 2 cents

Absolutely my friend, that's all I ask for.

All opinions and theories are of interest.

Au contraire it's an egotist's wet dream, a simulation of the whole galaxy lovingly painted around you for your own entertainment.

Also, spaceships :)

Thank you for calling me selfish........
You know this thread was actually a very nice read, untill you had to get all up and personal, dismissing all people who believe something else as you do.
I don't want to start a discussion about religion, you were certainly aiming for one, just don't......
A little respect for the guy next to you goes a long way you know.

And now consider the Hubble photo of the Andromeda Galaxy:

Each point is a Star

It's the Hubble Deep Field that blows my mind.

Bar a few scattered stars from the Milky Way, every light source is a galaxy.

Sometimes I stare up at the stars in the sky and feel truly humbled...bit like that guy in the audi earlier when he tried to undercut me and didn't realize I have about a hundred more bhp than he does...near put himself into the crash barrier trying though...silly boy racers all the gear no idea...

We are but grains of sand on a very large beach...does the grain of sand let this fact trouble them? No it does not. I have to go now, my nurse says it's time for my bath and we both love playing with the rubber duck ^^

Look at the previous page I already apologised if my first comment come along to rude, I dont want to take this thread in a direction like this.
Should have picked better or smoother words to explain my view.
English isnt my first language.
Everyone has to settle this questions for his self.

Stay open minded and yep, fly safe

Yea I knew kind of in a way but just didn't get the sense of scale before playing ED. As for God/religion I knew this would pop up and didn't mean to start a war but for me personally I am an Atheist, I believe God is made in mans image and so if other sentient beings exist then our own god kind of becomes moot.
