Newcomer / Intro Help I cant slow down!

Hi,

Well this is v odd. My thrusters work fine when I am cruising around space in or out of hyper cruise unless I am aproaching an orbiting space port or have just entered the system and want to refuel at its star.

Then the ship refuses to slow down and blasts past the target.

I have checked my control bindings and everything worked fine until the update. Landing at a planet or surface port is not an issue.

I have an old engineer mod on the thrusters and a new mod on the FSD. I don't really want to convert the thruster mod as its only l1 (so would go down to nothing) and I got a lucky roll in the secondary which added power to a sheilded thruster tweek.

Has anyone else found problems with mixed old and new engineer mods on their ships (since that's the only thing I can think it might be)?

Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

<edit>

Just discovered that I can slow down approaching a star if I first accelerate. Then the decelerate button on my controller works, but not before (!)

OK, this may be a dumb question, but if you throttle down does your ship indeed slow down?

Nope its not a dumb question but the answer is errrmmm. I have 2 keyboard keys bound to speed up and slow down. I use them mainly when I am scooping cargo.

Using the slow down key works if I am cruising in system or poddling around out of super cruise but it is not effective - or does not work if I am appoching the parent star having just jumped in, or if I have targetted a station and am supercrusing to it.

The two controller buttons are throttle access forward only and throttle access forward only throttle reverse. Its the latter thats behaving oddly.

I'm going to reboot and see if that fixes it (should have tried this before posting).

You seem to be in need of the 7 second rule.
Once your ETA is 7 seconds, hit 75% throttle. In most cases you will slow down properly.
I hit the button at 10 seconds jic, the rule doesn't work in complicated gravity wells

It's this, OP. Basically your Frame Shift Drive can only slow you down very gradually.

When aiming for a supercruise target, at 7-10 seconds out put your throttle indicator into the center of the blue region. This will time your deceleration perfectly so that you can safely disengage and drop in on your target.

Planets are a little trickier. Still use the rule, but as you get closer to orbital cruise you may want to throttle back significantly, and adjust up from there once your approach normalizes.

The bolded bit might be due to the fact that in 3.0. the throttle seems to do strange things all by itself during a hyperjump.

I always set my throttle to zero during the countdown, but as soon as the jump starts, the throttle goes to full (I can see this from the throttle animation), and I need to move it again to get it back to zero. Moving it any direction, just slightly achieves this.

On occasions, having even made this 'correction', the throttle will not be at zero when I exit the jump, but will be at about 50%. And on other, rare occasions, it will stay zeroed when the jump begins.

So it's somewhat random. This behavior started in the beta, was bug reported, but the response was it's working as intended. Frankly I don't believe that, as even with FD's love of random, I can't see that they would randomly mess with and override a player's throttle setting for laughs...

There are key Bindings that set your throttle to 25%, 50%, 75%. I suggest you bind these to F5.F6.F7.

When you are 10 seconds from your target just hit F7 (75%) and you will steadily fly to the station or uss.

Hi,

Sorry its not in the 7 second area. I have now found his is happening when I leave a station as well and given that I set to 50% while I do it I'm stumped as to what is causing this.

It appears that the throttle is stuck and only moving the increase throttle, even a slight bit, will free it. Trying to decelerate in any other way, whether its by setting the speed to a percentage, or using the key bindings etc has no effect. I thought it might be the controller, but I have tried another one with the same result.

Its not that the FSD can't slow the ship, its that the control to do so is not responding untill I blip the accelete a bit.

This has to be some odd bug. It only started after the upgrade and after I modded my FSD with an engineer. Guess I'll have to log (another <sigh>) bug report.
