Help me understand why Odyssey flight performance is so bad.

I'm not asking about the performance issues of Odyssey on the ground, in bases etc. but why is the inflight performance of Odyssey so poor?

Surely these aspects should have remained optimised and perfectly playable from the Horizons build? I'm talking from a VR perspective here and I'm on system that runs VR in Horizons A-OK, OC'd 1080ti, big and fast RAM and processors etc.

With rtx 2060 and ryzen 3600 i have solid 60 fps in space/stations (in-ship) on ultra using 3 monitors (5760x1080).

Actually im kinda suprised that people complain about performance. Meaby there is some bug that happens only on some computers.

Saw somewhere You should reset graphic setting by removing content of the folder "graphics" next to bindings.

The game renders things you can not see (that are behind obstacles or are very far away). For instance it renders eyeballs and hair from 20km or so away ... from NPCs that are not visible as they are hidden behind a ceiling/wall.

It's not optimized as the game is wasting your resources.

For the interest of science, try that via EDO and go to a ground station to walk about.

I have a 1080Ti, on paper mine is significantly more powerful that your card, despite being older, and EDO in space/stations (in ship) I agree on the whole extremely enjoyable. it's when I leave the ship to walk about the place, especially on planets when the FPS takes a nose dive. For reference:

EDH 4K - flawless on a 1080Ti @ solid 60fps
EDO 4K - very poor
EDO 1080p - mostly 28-60 dps, depending where I am. (in ship is good, on foot it varies)

Personally having great performance in space with RTX 3070 triple screen at 7680x1440 with around 100 to 120fps.
Had to jump back to horizons for a fuel rescue and it seemed to be smoother in Odyssey. I am running an older i7 4790k and CPU never goes over 70 even with EDMC, Voiceattack, Freetrack, G19 and chrome open.
On foot is another story! Change to single screen for anywhere between 20 and 50fps.

It's looking like optimisation has yet to be done.

Well yes. That being said why did FD not just "copy" the Horizons optimisation settings into this part of the game, after all it's the same right?

In VR, it's really odd. In 2D, I get 190fps in space and 70fps in starports. In VR, I get fps so low Oculus can't even apply ASW, only the cockpit and dark space ahead, and it causes headaches where Horizons maintains a stable 90+. It has something to do with the ship, once you switch to external cam, move the ship out of sight and look at dark space, framerates rised to 90+ (capped) again. The ship is the culprit, but obviously only in VR. The rest of situations I cannot judge, as 20fps is not enough for VR.

O7,
🙃

I don't know if that is sarcasm or not but it's actually not the same. The whole process of rendering a scene is different in Odyssey than in Horizons to support the new planetary tech or at least that was what they said somewhen iirc.
So to answer your question why they didn't just copy the optimisation procedures form Horizons (which is in fact way more complicated than simply copy pasting it) is because it's incompatible.

No sarcasm. I'm not a developer so to look at the game purely from a flying about in space PoV it looks the same so...

All i said was about playing EDO.
As for on-foot yeah it takes dive, i dont remember number though.
Rough guess is 25-35 @Ultra on surface, 25 or less in concourse.

Yesterday i just wanted to try some shooter gameplay, switched to 1 monitor, ultra preset
minus:
terrain quality ultra -> high
terrain textures (? something below terrain work slider) ultra->high

and had 50-60 fps in settlement. I think, well didint experience framerate drops. Later i can double check settings and fps if You are interested. But surely never came even close to 30fps. Ill try with full ultra at 1k

have you tryed to reset graphic setting by removing content of the folder "graphics" like has been said?
Because this problem to me vanisced after doing this.

Are those 60Fps capped? How much do you have in the same situation in EDH?

There are technical analysis around showing clear deficits with the new renderer and here you are claiming these are individual issues.

No idea. I'm getting 144fps on my 144hz in space. And I have a 1080ti, no longer considered a new card or top of line card.

Some people with 3080's are getting lower FPS then people with 980's... it's a bit crazy
