Here we go...The Update has Started

Really?

I love the new exploration mechanic. Finally it feels like I am exploring instead of mindless honking.

That's funny.

To me, it feels like I'm playing a really, really, boring fruit-machine which, until now, has been stood in a dark corner of my pretend spaceship, gathering dust.

The stars and planets in ED look incredible out of the cockpit canopy and if I want to "explore" I'm stuck with a crappy UI that looks like something out of a 1990s RTS.

Whoever was responsible for it should have spent more time looking over the shoulder of the people who created the mining updates, then binned what they'd done so far and just copied the style of the mining updates.

Just for a bit of balance....

Buy, yay. Update on it's way. [where is it]

Completely opposite sentiment here. I'll give it a few tens of hours more but it's got me contemplating life without ED.

I'm curious to see the reactions of those who approach it with fresh eyes.

Me too. Hate the new FSS system. Probably won’t dethrone my despise of the mandatory SRV for planet prospects not but definitely #2. Glad am Elite exploration already, will never be using FSS more than absolutely have to.

Don't disagree there. But, with a choice of what we'll get and what we had so far, I'll take anything over the old system.

I played the beta and like others yes the FSS changes have a learning curve. Once you progress through a few systems your finger memory will catch up.

The Ghost is ready to fly as soon as I drop in one piece of 3.3 gear I want to haul with me into the black.

See you all in analysis mode!

Ive enjoyed them. They are really fun and beats sitting there for 300000 ls. You still have the chance to play the old way too, scanning planets and shooting probes at them.

They added lots of depth to gameplay. While cutting some time out if you chose to.

Pretty neat imo.

holy crap...... a post from WGFD I can 100% agree with ;)

(however i do hope a few bits and pieces related to ui get tweaked a bit)

Even after a good play in Beta, I am still unsure if the scanning changes are good or not.
It appears that the new method removes the 1 tiny bit judgement where player could apply anything like intelligence or knowledge, or at least delays a similar but less difficult decision to beyond a lengthy hand/eye process.

OBAFGKM is now irrelevant, and KGBFOAM now does the job. That CANT be a good thing can it ?

When I honk the system with the new ADS does it fully reveal all the planets and their colorations or did Frontier go back to grey blobs? If it's still able to be done the old way at a glance seeing the system map and layout then I might bother hitting elite exploration (or just mindlessly follow road to riches). Cause if possible I plan to have no bindings for the new scanner, I dislike it and will actually manually unbind everything from it.

Good to know, OP.
I just made a small ‚holiday‘ in the x universe and i really missed things in elite.

I tried some new exploring mechanics but left it then, cause i didn‘t want to spoil myself. So time to kick some thargoids butts..

Fly safe, Cmdrs!

Heh, it's almost comical to see such levels of animosity towards a new gameplay mechanic. Daily life must be a constant struggle.

Comical, of all the days to get ill on :D

Seriously!! I was at work! I thought I was a bit sluggish during my first rounds before my break, maybe it was the strong morning Coffee giving my hands the tremors, but after the break and a cup of tea, I had started to have feel cold, the shakes got worse, but I was wearing a jacket and I was sweating.
My bosses too one look at me and sent me home and planned for my absence for tomorrow.

Un-ironically I'm downloading ED.... life sucks sometimes but in a pleasant way.

Last time I looked, the new "honk" only reveals the star(s) so that's all you get to see in the System map.

I agree, I dunno why they couldn't have left that part of the old system in place.
The new FSS seems to be all about allowing people to earn credits for scanning/mapping things, as well as finding things, so they could've just set it up so honking to reveal the system map doesn't actually yield any payment or reveal any POIs within a system - simply provides the player with a pretty picture of the system they're in.

Um. Sounds like they've kinda-sorta killed jonking.

Not even close, camera suite was way more work. This really is just binding pitch/yaw twice, plus a toggle or two.

That's good to know.

Can you re-use flight pitch/yaw, or does it have to be on otherwise unused controls? I'm guessing (and hoping!) the former.

Looking forward to getting home, turning the PC on, setting the game to update, eating dinner, washing up, firing up the game, reconfiguring Voice Attack to cope with the new UI, realising I have to go to bed, going to work tomorrow, coming home again, and playing the update.

Good times.

I'm using the left controller stick to move the cursor, and the right stick to zoom in/out and move the radio range. So, yes.

Yep.

Much as it gives me the heeby-jeebies when people do it. [where is it]

Just said the same thing in Spacecat's thread...

You've, basically, got the FSS, DSS, galmap, sysmap, ship HUDs, station-menu, camera-suite and multicrew controls which ALL make use of most of the same inputs (look around, zoom in and out, confirm/reject things and then a couple of additional functions).

None of these functions ever overlap so you can, theoretically, figure out ONE set of inputs for ALL these UIs and re-use them for each one.

For the purposes of the beta, I squeezed all the FSS/DSS controls onto my mouse without any problems.
If you want something more dedicated, a USB gamepad will manage it too.
