High quality classical music options?

Welcome to the forums optician,

great hearing some Classical HQ music and im sure ED will be using similar music in game.

not sure this is the place for this thread but ill leave that to the mods.

I'm fairly sure David has already said there will be classical music in the game.

Which is FANTASTIC! Frontier got me into classical music, especially Mussorgsky.

MMORPGITALIA: In closing: maybe inspired by “2001: A space odissey”, those starships dancing on “By the beautiful blue Danube” were a stroke of genius. As a kid I could stare at them for a very long while and from there my passion for classical music was born. Can we expect the same kind of soundtrack or are we going to get the latest dubstep crap?

David Braben: No – we are going for a full classical musical style, and it will include the Blue Danube!

Also, although I can't dig up the original post, I remember a dev promising they would try to include all the classical pieces from the Frontier games in the score, minus the ones specifically composed for those games (Frontier Theme, Quality Quartet etc.) - those would be replaced with new music.

I want Chris Jarvis' cover of the Frontier theme in the game, it's mega epic! That should be the only non-classical piece allowed ;)

Maybe they can simply make a simple plug-in feature in the cockpit which allows you to play your own music collection from your own pc.
It would be nice if you play full screen and you don't need to switch displays. :p

Oh, that's a shame. Was hoping for a general musical direction like this remake, but with much more live and organic big orchestra feel to it.

Back then it was understandable with limited amount of tracks. But now space and memory management makes it a non issue. Could even be a dynamic download thing as they find and add more and more music.

Some of my choices:
Bach, Cello Suites (BWV 1007, 1008, 1009, 1010)
Those four broken up into their individual parts could make a decent amount of tracks for a given event type.

The best of Bach, except a better version of 17 (which here have a completely weird start (imo) but at least include the fugue - which is a must :)).
Again, use of pure church organ tracks (regardless of composer) in a certain fashion, could be an indicator of certain events. Probably not combat music :D

Some Mozart slow piano (solo, no orchestra) movements and/or some Chopin Nocturnes (other romantic piano stuff as well); again special feel and instrumentation to certain events.

Albinoni- Adagio in G Minor - tracks in this line are obviously suited for KIA events.

Some Gregorian chant tracks which can be fairly short. Heavily featured in Civilization 4, and absolutely stunning. Other choral stuff here (only the pure vocal ones), the Barber one (Adagio for Strings arranged as Agnus Dei) can be split in three parts if shorter pieces are desired. Think I might have split the chants with the rest as far as event type goes.

Basically, what I'm saying is that the music chosen could be so much more than the power symphonies and waltzes.

I simply like a mp3 radio in my cockpit to listen to whatever I want

If this is not possible, then it will suffice if we want change from time to time, mute the music of the game, and listen to music on his personal hifi system. This is what I would do sometimes.

Being old enough to have played Elite on C64, i really would like to have the option to choose between the games soundstracks and my own. There are great classical pieces which sound well in space, but even an English Music Label called WARP  has tracks which would do it also for me (WARP would be considered in the House or Electronical musical genre). :)

Most games allow you to do this anyway - turn off ingame music and put on WinAmp (or similar) as a background task and voila! :)

Bach and church organs, you say?

Hmmm...

;)

Not Bach, but a rather modern piece. Due repetitiveness and pace, may not be for the faint hearted. For the old C64 guys around here though, some themes in it may be extremely familiar ;)
Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi

Ehm, no, not really. Outside game player can't react to ingame events and it becomes a struggle to control the player. If you want high level of control, you might even find that most games doesn't even survive alt-tab very good either.

[immersion mode] I'm cruising around, admiring the eye-candy, with my favourite music playing on my ship's 64-point hi-fi* - it might be Bach or Zappa, or any point in between - and I get jumped by a couple of bandits. Do I say 'Hang on, guys... I'll just switch to some more suitable music, then we can rumble'. I don't think so, somehow. [/immersion mode]

*Either my PC's media player or my hi-fi system.

Classical music is a must. My own tastes are a bit non-conformist, however, as I prefer the early 17th century composers and their "simpler" classical pieces (it is also my favourite era and the one I write novels for, so it kind of goes with the territory).

The ship's computer - although not an AI - will be able to learn your preferences and change the music so that it is the most suitable to get the best possible performance out of you. Relaxing while cruising and adrenaline-pumping (not too much, though) during battles.
