Holy VRAM batman!!!

Today, while playing Elite: Dangerous in VR, I noticed that I was using 10.4/11 GB of VRAM!

Holy cow! I've never seen it that high! I usually see around 6GB of VRAM usage. And it could have been higher, but that's the value I saw when I glanced down. It seemed to jump periodically from 10.1 to 10.4 GB. That's a lot of ram...

And I only noticed that it was using that much VRAM because I haphazardly glanced at the GPUMEM usage in fpsVR. Usually I just look at the frame rate.

What changed, FD? What are we getting in exchange for this increased use of VRAM.

Anyone else experienced this?

And what of the people who don't have 11GB of VRAM?

Haven’t checked but for the first time the game is frequently freezing up for me.

Ah pity the fool who has less than 11gb vram.

No, really, I pity them.

Maybe that's what's causing all the crashes?

When I shut down Elite my vram usage dropped all the way down.

Check your vram usage, people, and report back.

As of 3.3 the game will use far more VRAM than before, if it's available. There is also far less texture pop-in when really pushing texture resolutions.

I've seen upwards of 10GiB utilized on my 1080 Ti.

Still getting the occasional 15-20 second freeze though...where CPU and GPU utilization fall to 0%, irrespective of current VRAM use.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the freezing is related to maximizing vram usage .

I'm doubtful. Any VRAM related hitching I've seen in ED in the past (such as with my Fury) has generally been seen when assets were desperately being evicted.

The current freezing doesn't seem to have any relation to how much VRAM is currently being used and doesn't result in a reduction in VRAM use after it resolves.

Doubt the freeze is vram related.

I'd be more inclined to think the freeze is server side as everything freezes and I think it is everyone freezing at the same time.

DAT cobra engine has surprised me with some of the things it has pulled off.

I'd love to figure out what the freezing issue is about as it's getting really annoying. Right now, its not that big a deal ... but if I'm out exploring with DW2 in a few months and I die at a neutron star because my game froze up when attempting to superjump, I am absolutely going to lose my sh**

Yeah I’ve been bumbling about doing pve stuff in spare time and it’s annoying enough (I also have the 1080ti which runs most things smoothly) but this will really suck for pvp. Been a steady thing since the update too. CZs are still completely broken as well. This time around nothing seems to spawn.

I'm pretty sure the freeze is not client side so I wouldn't go messing with anything.

I made the mistake of alt tabbing the first time it happened and nearly cooked me conda in a star so do nada and wait for it to unfreeze.

The game definitely does some goofy things with the GPU. Last night I went to two engineers' bases in VR and in both cases my framerate tanked - only when flying above the bases. I have no idea what they're doing with those, but it's the only place where my framerate dips below 45fps. Even when in fogged planetary rings looking towards the planet, which one would think has the most impact, my frame rate stayed good. Visit Felicity and it's stutter mode. I have a 1070Ti with 8GB of VRAM.

Doubt very much it is VRam.

In almost all cases, the Elite Dangerous: St St Stutter is for 20 seconds or there-about. Now take into account the massive variations in PC builds and there is no way it would be so uniform.

Secondly, after the St St Stutter, there is no rubber banding, everything is as it was, which wouldn't be the case with VRam.

Thirdly, I mostly get it in HazRez, and if it was VRam, then I'd experience more often that say mining or SC. And it would be constant. Different ships, different textures, different location, different resources in the HazRez. But it's not, it's purely random.

Lastly, this is was an issue prior to 3.3 but a rare occurrence which I didn't bug report, because I thought it was just me overloading.

I'm running in VR max-settings, on a non-OCd i7 bin chip @4.2, 32bg Ram, 1080ti on all on a Maximus IX with GFX, CPU and Motherboard Water Cooling. My GFX rarely goes above 48%.

I've a gtx 960 with 2gb ram and running on Ultra and I've had the odd freeze and release as well as some disconnects. Majority of these IIRC have all been when entering a system. No expert at all but it looks to me like server/network issues.

A little inconvenient, but not spoilt my enjoyment too much of what has been a good update. Doesn't look like we'll get a fix before Christmas though....?

Which Christmas were you referring to ? :D :D :D :D

I just checked my VRAM and it's using 5.3GB of the 6 available on my GTX 1060. Not quite sure how or where because I'm currently floating beside a star. The Elite executable is using less than 3GB of system RAM as well.

If it's even maxing out an 11GB card, perhaps it's just keeping everything possible in memory just in case?

I don't think that this is anything to do with the freezes, they seem to be random to me, and they also seem to be a proper freeze of the entire simulation, not just a freeze at my end. Almost always, everything just picks up exactly where it was.

The freezing is related to the comms server, has been verified by many users (you can also check your log files) the issue isn't client side.

As far as Vram usage, this game has always been hungry. Am currently using 5gb on my 1080TI, that is in VR with everything cranked up, am out in the middle of nowhere parked up on planet.

It's fair to say that as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, the ED Comms server is running on a 1984 era BBC Micro with 32Kb RAM and a 5.25" floppy. The 20-30 sec freeze is when Ed Lewis swaps out the disc.
