Horizons: 64 bit only; DX11 only

Isn't there also variants, that some people have WIN64 (XP, Vista, WIN7, WIN8 etc), but directx10 graphic cards? Is here statistic about them too?

Your 10 year old graphics card needs to go in the bin too. DX11 came out in 2008 with Vista. Cards that were compatible with it came out before the launch of Vista.

I doubt a pre-2008 graphics card can run ED now.

Everything since 1.3 points to consolidation between the platforms. The "optimizations" made to the game has been nothing but downgrades for the PC game.
There are many threads about this already.
There's no Mac version since Horizons will not work on the current software. Did Frontier tell them that when they released ED for Mac? No.
Did Frontier know it would not work? Yes, they did.
If what you say about the Xbox game and Horizons is true, do the Xbox players know this?

I'm glad for you that you're hopeful for this game. I wish I could share that outlook.
I dont even play this game anymore, I just pop in at these forums at times to see if I can find a reason to do so again.
Not this time.

Those graphics changes, they weren't a 1.3 thing, they started with the Mac port, Metal doesn't support DX9 fully, nothing higher is supported at all, and that's on Apple to fix, no one else, it's their OS. FD has a thing about continuity, a thing they are finally realizing isn't sustainable thank the gods, but while they were following it, no version of the game could look better than any other version, and the Mac version was the low man on the totem pole for graphics, so...all the graphics 'optimizations', thank the Mac port for that, not the console, XBOne supports DX11 natively, DX12 with a software upgrade, and it's hardware is better than many of the Macs and PCs running the game right now.

Did Frontier know that Mac didn't support DX9 fully and DX11 at all? Yes, I'm sure they did, it's not a secret after all, it's been an issue for years, but like most of us in the industry, they figured Apple would pull their collective heads out and fix that. Apple didn't, Apple actually has shown NO intention of doing so as it happens, they've actually pretty much totally left OSx on the side of the road and now work on iOS and anything done for OSx is simply a side effect of iOS updates that can be translated, that's it. Macs aren't a good revenue stream, iPhones and iPads ARE the revenue stream now, so all work is concentrated on them. Sucks, but hey, that's how it goes.

So FD made the call finally, Macs are left behind, can't fix the problem and Apple doesn't care, so go ahead and go with DX11. Stats show that the majority of the systems running Elite Dangerous are 64 bit systems, 99%+, so bump that up as well, gives you FULL DX11 support as 32 bit can't do it properly, and it gets you set for DX12 upgrades, as that is a 64 bit only app.

Why XBOne isn't getting Horizons, you got me on that, it's DX11 natively, it's a 64 bit OS, and it's hardware exceed the min specs for Horizons, so...no idea at all. I figure that will come shortly, reasons why it's not done, again, no idea at all.

E: D should still run on those machines shouldn't it? - its Horizons that needs the upgrade

minimum specs according to the store pages, the minimum specs have changed quite a bit, but I would say most people will have them covered and the recommended specs have not really changed that much at all

(and of course there is no Mac client for Horizons)

Past configuration :
DualCore 6320 oc/ed @ 2.8Ghz / GTX 260 / 4G DDR2 / SSD : runs in 1680*1050 and windowed. lagged a bit during hyperspace jump
6320 replaced by E5450 @3.6Ghz : game runs very smooth
this PC wont run horizon

Intel G3420 / GTX 670 / 8G DDR3 / SSD : runs in fullHD, doesnt lag, very smooth game.
this PC wont run horizon

cost to upgrade CPU on 2nd computer : 180E
cost to upgrade 1stPC : a motherboard, a CPU, ram, GFX card, power supply : 700E

both are no go. bought lifetime pass, wont be able to enjoy it for xmas

now i have to explain that to the 2 future Space Pilots that earth is going to lose, explain them that a huge brain, deep motivation, cleverness, are not enough. World runs on money.

:_(

Your first PC just needs a newer video card, $125 US dollars for a GTX 950, if the mobo will fit the card, which could very well be an issue.

Second PC, it's hardware looks just fine, GTX 670 is DX11 capable natively, so what's the hold up there? Are both systems lacking a 64 bit OS? Upgrade to Windows 10, that's free, even if you need to upgrade to the 32 and then upgrade that to the 64, it's still free.

Thanks - I dont know much about upgrading. WOuld if I could/did. Any website for a non techy you know of that can explain my options?

Add also "the hardware specifications" in the title of this thread, because that my thread on this subject has been closed and linked with this one ...

Microsoft.
We have to beta and bug squash before submitting the XBONE release to MSQA.

This would be nice...have you been able to verify the client changes will not affect earlier versions of the game.? It would seem that this might get a bit messy over time. Keeping a forked client running and updated.

I would be hopeful this would be the case...but have not heard it to be so.

Heh - be polite. Everyone wants an answer and it's better for everyone that there is one place to find them, instead of 5 ( at the last count).

The Windows 10 upgrade, it's free, you don't actually need to know anything, it's automatic and fairly painless, just can take a bit of time and an active internet connection helps greatly.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade
That should give you all the info you need and get you on your way.

As for the hardware upgrade for that 1st system, I'm not willing to tell you to drop money on a video card that the motherboard may well not support. But your 2nd system is fine for Horizons on the hardware. Do you know if your video card from the 2nd system will work in the 1st system? If it does, well, you can get another GTX 670 pretty cheap and you are good to go. I'm thinking that first system of yours, probably needs a new motherboard and all however, sorry.

Yeah but when I posted . Originally there wasn't 4 pages of fluff before my question... also it was time sensitive as the computer in reference has other offers. I do apologize for my brunt nature. But I get 10 mins to check for every several hours just trying to make the most of that time

Yes, that system should be just fine, it's even 64 bit. I would suggest upgrading to Win10, but that's purely optional, as what you have is 64 bit and supports DX11 as it stands right now.

Awesome.. Lastly is $175 Canadian a good price..

THANKS EVERYONE. . price seems good to me I will grab it and soon hope to leave the XBONE side of ED and join the "DARK SIDE " OF pc ED
