Horrible Ship Names

Ever Just see a cmdr , with such a bad, unimaginative/unoriginal ship name, and wonder why? why even bother naming your ship something stolen from Scifi like "Nostromo" "millennium falcon" "enterprise" "firefly" or the "Ishimura" when you KNOW that every chump in a sidewinder is going to name his the exact same way, M

is it weird/wrong i enjoy merking people(in game) with unimaginative/unoriginal ship names?
Ermmmm mine is the nostromo what be the problem with it..

Used bitstorm as an alias on various platforms including Twitch, then Twitch invented bits. I'm sure streamers get the wrong idea. :(

Called my Xeno-research Conda Discovery, then ST: Discovery came out. Everyone will be "oh he copied the name, how rubbish". Deep in the black can't really change it now. :(

I tend to give my ship names appropriate to their use..
So for Passenger ships, they usually have "maru" at the end (and yes, there is NO Kobiyashi)
I name my exploration ships after famous explorers.. So my main is an anaconda called Shackleton. another conda is the
Roald Amundsen, my aspx is the Amelia Earheart, and the krait phantom I took to beagle point on DW2 , as part of lave radio coverage is called the Osa Johnson

Combat ships tend to have more aggressive names.. So my FDL is "The Pointy End" (as well as the game of thrones reference) fer de lance means tip of the spear. My God rolled Corvette is the "The Last shadow" and Combat cutter in midnight black "Abyssal"

My trade cutter I call "License to print..."

General purpose ships get various names. My Krait 2 is "Bungarus caeruleus" and my python which I've as a general mission runner since 2015 "old faithful"

My AX ships tend to follow mythological names so my AX conda is "Bellerophon" My thargoid sample getter "the poke and run" and my AX Chieftain "forlorn hope"

I was doing AX CZs last night, and toyed with the names "Nukemfromorbit" and "Sulaco", not because I was envisioning myself as a character in the series (which would be fine), but to amuse the other players. There are many levels of humor, a sidey named "Death Star" would be fun. Fantasy mmos, have thousands of 12 year old boys naming their characters Legolas or Aragorn. Let people enjoy themselves, however they see fit.

Isn't imitation a form of flattery? I think all those names are from great movies/games. Except for Firefly, never watched that one. Now you got me trying to remember the name of the ship from "Event Horizon"! That's one of the names I was going to pick for my Annie but ended up with "Porkchop" 'cos Annies have have such fat bellies!
You need to watch firefly

Not sure a refining platform qualifies as a "scow" -- M-Class star freighter, "Forty-two million in adjusted dollars. That's minus payload, of course." Sounds like a bargain!
I didn't hesitate naming my ship the nostromo... I was going to call it "big space subordination twozzak" but it just didn't sound as good and I couldn't fit those words on it

I though Maru designated fishing vessels in Japanese?

You've not watched Firefly?

Man, have you been missing a treat.....

I usually have a chuckle at the expence of names like Executioner, Exterminator, Equalizer...

I routinely open coms to compliment good ship names.

I thought about naming my 2nd Corvette "Executor" - y'know, after Vader's ship.
Even typed the name into the little box-thing but I knew it was a bit cheesy.
Launched the ship, flew out of the station, used the external camera to have a look at the ship, saw the nameplate and thought "No, I just can't."
Back to the station for a re-think.

Well, I dunno if this name is horrible or not, but I'm sure it was unimaginative: I named my exploration Clipper "Cartographer" and it's too on the nose for sure. I have hopes that someday we'll get a new Imperial ship that could compete with the DBx or Aspx as a exploration focused vessel and in that hypothetical timeline it would be called the "Imperial Cartographer" because all ships in the Empire start with C and end with R apparently and I figured it would fit the naming convention they're already using. So yeah, not the best name, but still better than what I named my Sidewinder...

My Sidewinder got its name from a combination of two things:

1. My love of the anime 'Outlaw Star'
2. The adorable tiny race of characters in Final Fantasy XIV

So a little red sidey called 'The Outlala Star'

So dumb...😖

My Viper Mk IV is called Trimeresurus Rubeus. It's a green hull with red weapons. My Imp Eagle is 'Kinzal', my Cobra MkIII is 'Gothmog' in respect to Dungeon Master on the Amiga 1200, my Asp X is Cleo (obvious really), my FAS is 'Elena's Fortune' in respect of Egosoft's X series, my Clipper is 'Water Witch' (Google is your friend (not really)), my Alliance Challenger is 'Marian' in deference to the Sisters of Mercy, my 1st Krait MkII is 'Karawala' and my 2nd is 'Kala Taro' (again, Google is your friend and again, not really), my Python is KAA (Jungle Book anyone?), my Cutter is 'Leviathan' for obvious reasons and my Sidewinder is 'Doodle' because, personal, my DBX is 'Space Hopper' 'cos that's what it does.

I name all my ships after actual creatures based on the ship type except for the ones that I don't. I have 38 ships.
