Hot takes for planet zoo

thing is steam only advertises the asian animal pack as having 7 animals and no exhibit so this has to be in the free update is its true. Which is wild considering our last free update consisted of a plant and we havent gotten a free animal for anything other than an anniversary.
The Steam news is only focused on the DLC, adding info on the free update in the same news post could be a bit confusing. I imagine Frontier will make a bigger mention of the butterfly next week.

Might be a hot take but the 4 flowers last time seem like more workload to me than a butterfly reskin

They are probably comparable in size I would say. The actual 3d modelling would side in favour of the butterfly with almost no model edits just new textures. However there is the whole doing the research adding the zoopedia entries mapping and all the other stuff that probably levels the workload out to just over barely anything.

That being said one is infinitely more useful and meaningful than the other to the point alot of people even forgot we got the flower.

We Don't Need Anymore Cats. We Have More Cats Than All Of The African Antelopes Combined, Which Includes The Dik-dik, Gazelles, Oryx, Wildebeest, Spiral-Horned Antelopes And Stuff Like The Sable Antelope, All Of Which Are Pretty Different And Got Vastly More Hate Than Any Felid.
ok but just because we have alot of cats doesnt necessarily make the elephant better
the asiatic lion whilst being just as taxonomically diverse if not worse than the elephant it offers new biomes regions and contexts to place a lion in (to be clear its not a great pick either) it is also fairly commonly requested among players.
The fishing cat would represent the first small cat from south east asia and only second tropical small cat and is common in captivity and also represents a new context for cats with very few in game cats being active swimmers and it would be the most prominent swimmer.

I agree we don't need more cats but to say the elephant is better simply because its not a cat is not an argument when the cats even when we have way too many of them can offer something new unlike the elephant which taxonomically is barely different doesnt have unique range, biome or other ecological contexts to separate it from the indian besides being small which is already replicated in the indian elephant since they are under sized.

And they're not even that much smaller than the mainland elephant... so far, it seems the Bornean Elephant is just an Indian Elephant with a greyer color palette.

Now That I Think About It, Maybe I Should Have Said Preferred.

My hot take:
Despite being a die-hard ungulate fan, I would have sacrificed the Nilgai for an Asiatic Lion.
Nilgai is very cool, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't feel like a necessity to me. The Blackbuck, sure. Nilgai? Debatable.

I like it when packs have a balanced roster, and include what is basically a full "ecosystem" with predator and prey animals alike... And this pack really feels like it's lacking a big carnivore.

Hot Take: The Bornean Pygmy Elephant Is Better Than Asiatic Lion Or Fishing Cat.
I agree, I'm glad there is no Asiatic lion. I wouldn't trade Nilgau for anything else either.... Alternatively, I would swap the elephant for some bird.... But definitely not for another lion, especially since Asia already has a good representation when it comes to cats....
Yesterday was so meh when it comes to choosing animals, because each animal is wonderful separately, but together for me they did not fit....
Today I find that the selection of animals is good. The birds are missing, yes, but the birds will make up for it in mods....

Is it tho? Honestly i prefer the flower to the butterfly lol, the flowerless version is a great grass piece that ive been using alot since. The free butterfly is neat, but id be lying if i said it has any impact at all for me really.
So imo the infinitely more usefull and meaningfull one is actually the flower

This reminded me of another hot take for Planet Zoo:
We need a Zoopedia, but for PLANTS.
I think it would be cool to have at least actual distribution map for the in-game plants, and other things such as their scientific names and a couple fun facts would be really nice

while they are at it fix some of the god awful range tags and taxonomy on plants why are the clearly african baobab trees labelled as oceanian

That flower is actually my least favourite plant in the whole game it just looks like plastic to me so maybe im biased.
A new animal will have more impact overall maybe not to you personally but im sure all the people who didnt buy grasslands would love the access to both walkthrough exhibits and butterflies and a new species makes a louder splash even if its ripple is shorter lived.

It's genuinely a very smart pick as far as freebies go.
  1. Makes walkthrough exhibits useful in the base game
  2. Low effort in terms of modelling and animating
  3. Subtly advertises the DLC pack
The most surprising thing is that it took them 6 years to think about this approach
A lot of people might have skipped out on the Grasslands Pack if they could have gotten a butterfly for free instead of having to buy the pack. I think it makes sense from Frontier's perspective to wait 2+ years before giving base game players a use for the WTE—they want their packs to sell after all, and the butterflies were a major selling point of the Grasslands Pack, I assume.

But I agree with the sentiment and would have loved for this to be a thing in earlier packs/updates.

Hot take: I want more cats! I want the Canadian Lynx and the Iberian Lynx and the Fishing Cat and the Asiatic Lion and the Sumatran Tiger!
But I'm not done here... I also want the Tibetan Fox! Yes, that's right! "Another" canid"...
And I prefer Yaks over Gaurs.
And I hate when people say that "WE don't need..." - No, YOU don't need ... But I do, so I hate it when people include everyone in "we" when it's obviously not everyone!

Not exactly a hot take, but I kinda want to spit-ball an alternate reality. Suppose that instead of our annual freebies, we instead got a Deluxe Animal Pack at launch with these 8:
  • African Leopard
  • Black-&-White Ruffed Lemur
  • Collared Peccary
  • Komodo Dragon
  • Pygmy Hippopotamus
  • Red Deer
  • Thomson's Gazelle
  • Malabar Rose Butterfly (also includes the Walkthrough exhibit)
How many people would've bought this?
