How about having medals in game to promote things we can do?

Yes, medals for some major achievements would be nice. I could see superpowers, powers, factions (BGS), cartographers, pilots federation and also other groups (Ram Tah?) granting medals. IMO, medals would also be nice way to encourage to try different stuff (unlike Engineers who try to force-feed you mining etc.).

Well Elite is really supposed to be a free roam/"sandbox" game. Achievements to guide you to completing set role challenges kinda gets in the way of that.

I don't think so. Achievements have not gotten "in the way" of playing in any other free roam game. ED is no different.

Maybe some players who just must have all achivements would agree with you.

The fact remains, this sort of thing needs to be in from the start otherwise the medals loose there shine when you've already achieved most of the goals.

Is it even possible to track an active accounts achievement?
So we're looking at something that would activate on a fresh start, which is entirely achievable as the PS4 has just this sort of thing already.

Yeah lets have a Gold Star for when you're a good boy and a Black Mark for when you've been naughty.

Yeah, because that's how the actual military views the concept?

There should've been a medal for successfully using lenslock :)

Why stop there. Windows should issues medals My first blue screen etc..

I think people would be generally against "console/Steam-style achievements" - many ED players are refugees from achievement-focused games and wouldn't like to see them here.

What you might find more popular is actual awards and decorations that would be visible in-game to you and others - medals for your flightsuit, or decals for your ships - earned by doing certain things which you could reasonably expect to receive some kind of commendation for. Participating in certain CGs and fleshing out the "military career" with military awards and campaign medals as rewards would be two options that I think would receive far more approval from the player base.

Agreed! I don't want to see trophies or achievements in the same way as Playstation or XBOX, but I would like to see medals that can be applied to my ship in a modular style, kind of like the current decal system in place where you can get certain one-time decals for participating in large community events (like distant worlds 1&2, still kicking myself for not going on those, lol) but smaller, and the ability to add multiple.

it doesn't happen so much anymore, since most games that were around when achievements/trophies came around aren't really around anymore, but those that are (WoW comes to mind) went through a change where they applied achievements to players' past actions. It wouldn't be hard considering most of your actions are already stored on your profile, and many more that aren't visible are still stored on Frontier's side.

Heh, this gave me a chuckle.

What worries me is that people would actually be on edge if they hadn't earned it...

I can almost hear the mumbling about not everyone being equal, as some sweaty dude googles a "how to earn this achievement" guide, featuring guaranteed achievement cheeses such as pulling out memory sticks during boot up.

Unless it's a bobble head trophy. I wouldn't mind these coming in the form of cosmetics and I think that's what most people were suggesting too.

Yeah because putting your life on the line is just the same as sitting in a chair pretending you're in space.

You understand that there is a level of suspended disbelief required for basically every facet of the game right? You draw the line at the fanciful military rewarding their fanciful pilots for their fanciful actions in a fanciful game, do you?
The ranking systems are just as, if not more, contrived as this concept. Should they have not been included?

I'm just going to jump in and say neither achievements or the ranking system are top dollar ideas here.

I know the ranking system has heritage and all, but holy cow is it the least engaging ranking system I've seen in a game.

It's not really supposed to be engaging. It's just a passive thing that is there, the "medal" system proposed by the OP is simply an extension of it, a more nuanced presentation of the players achievements. Considering the premise of the game is to blaze your own trail within a "living" galaxy, it stands to reason that we should have ways to do that.

I'm confused, you advocate blazing your own trail, then state achievements would contribute to this.

If you like the pat on the head that's 100% okay by me, but don't promote achievement tick boxes as conducive to dynamic play. By direct nature they encourage players to do the same thing, because completing those things is how achievements are earned.

Nothing wrong with the odd side quest. Besides, that happens already.
