How about some icy caves..

P.S. The interiors of asteroid bases are in fact 'caves'.. surely the tech could be adapted?
The interior of asteroid bases are stations with different objects placed inside the cylinder apparently ;-)
as for thargoid base, I think it was a proof of concept "level-like" structure and was a clever hack on the engine. Maybe some proof of concept stuff that was so cool that they put it in game. IDK.

Good points, although it would be nice for Fdev to place a few of the 'asteroid ports' base cylinders end-to-end, in a joined up, linear fashion; on the surface of planets.... et voila 'caves' (so lose the landing pads etc.)

P.s. I'd like to point out that what I know about generating 'computer graphic' assets can easily be written on a postage stamp. (with a little space to spare!)

Well frontier say no 'overhangs' or 'caves' in Odyssey for 'technical' reasons... but they did a fine job with the Thargoid base (Caverns).... so the caves for Odyssey; even like your fantastic cave above, will need less detailing/procedural generation than did the 'Thargoid Cavern'.... so I'm hopeful that in the fullness of time we might get 'underground' vista's in Odyssey on all planet types including Icy ones.

P.S. The interiors of asteroid and Thargoid bases are in fact 'caves' in the simplest sense.. surely the tech could be adapted?

Those structures are hand built and placed, no-one is going to hand build and place caves and stuff like that on trillions of planets, to work acceptably they would need to be procedurally generated otherwise you would have caves on a few planets in the bubble but nothing in the rest of the galaxy, and that would be silly. So I do suspect it's going to take a complete re-working of the planetary tech before we get caves or overhangs so it can be done procedurally.
