How are people making 1M merits on the first day of the cycle?

Would someone mind sharing with me, what is the magic activity that allows people to get crazy amounts of merits seemingly the instant that servers are up after weekly reset?

I don't intend to participate in PP other than to get modules unlocked (as I belive that FDev missed the opportunity after all this time to test some kind of Open Only/"more beneficial on Open" activity), so speeding up the leveling process would be greatly appriciated.

Where are you seeing those numbers? In older threads when a certain exploit was going around?

I guess in the top 10 CMDRs of each Power you'd maybe see one or two at max. who are beyond one million merits - and that's after a full week, not a couple of hours.

To me, it seems the average merit earning methods are between 10k-20k per hour. It can be higher for mining under the right circumstances. And some people just have more time to play than others.

How are you seeing the top ten Cmdr's for this cycle?

The leaderboard is for last cycle.
(
Prof.Liebstrumpf is a good friend of mine - and he has been grinding very hard to get into 4th place for the last week)

Allegedly progress is much quicker now... (and would probably take less than the 48 weeks to get all then with PP1)
(as I belive that FDev missed the opportunity after all this time to test some kind of Open Only/"more beneficial on Open" activity),
PvP activities for PP 2 are open only... Otherwise the Hotel is still open
so speeding up the leveling process would be greatly appriciated.
Why not ask some of the player groups for the power you are interested in joining how they gain merits?

Seeing how people were able to almost reach rank 100 in the first week and now some having rank >1000 after a month or so I think sooner rather than later there will be need to patch the leaderboard to make more space for digits in the rank column.

I don't understand another aspect of it.
Okay, someone strives to reach rank 100 to achieve everything. But I see in the tables people who do it every week.
What's the point of that?

They might just be working for the power goals.

Outside of the weekly tasks I try to keep my activities focused on the systems highlighted in my power’s discord.

I don't get it. Why Discord? Doesn't it show up in the game?
I remember during the Thargoids war, on the left side when selecting a Titan, there was a list of 5-6 systems on the bottom where it was recommended to beat the Thargoids first.
Heard in an interview about PP2 that this was taken fromThargoids War. I.e. the list of the most needed systems should be inside the game.

(Archer's objectives really havent been a secret this week, so I don't think they'll mind me showing them!)

As people have said, it's all about coordination - it's much more efficent when Powerplayers pool their resources (but it's also nice to feel like a part of a community too)
For example, at the start of last weeks cycle, I was quite busy reinforcing Shoujeman until I checked in with the Federal Command Discord...
They informed me of the battle for Alpha Centauri (I had somehow completely missed it) and off I went.
I'm so glad they did too - it was a VERY close contest - some epic moments were had o7

You are totally right though.
While the raw data is technically inside the game - there should be much more accessible ways to mark systems and see what other Cmdrs are focusing on - from within the game.
