How can you be Allied to all 3 superpowers?

How can you be "Allied" to both The Empire and The Federation? Even worse how can you be allied to all 3 superpowers? Being "friendly" to all 3 kinda makes sense, because you can still be neutral, but if you are allied to one faction, surely you are the enemy of the opposite faction....

Because they are not officially at war. It's more of a cold-war situation at the moment with a few accusations here and there but nothing to say a mercenary can't help all 3 :)

For example you can support the Federation/Imperial/Alliance against independent factions thereby making them all your friends without harming your reputation with any of them.

Also you are not really a political entity or subject owing loyality. More a 1-man corporation / mercenary company.

It's more about their diplomatic status towards you as an individual, rarther than who you have allied with, the ranking for Fed or Empire is basically driving licences.

Have you never been with three partners that hated each other at the same time?

While it can be explained away by some of the above posts the real problem is the faction system was never fully implemented, at least not in a meaningful way.
I always thought the whole system was a placeholder and PP was going to fix it...I was wrong, instead it didn't touch it other than to add a superficial decay mechanic.
I hoped for a system where you chose a side and reaped benefits from being allied to a faction or you could remain neutral/independent and missions, CG's, CZ's etc options would reflect your allegiance.
Ah well

I tend to agree. I feel like if you hit Allied with any one major faction, you should automatically drop to Friendly with the others. Or they could change the word 'Allied' to something else, since you aren't actually allied in any way, shape or form.

Can you get along with two people who don't like each other?

the opposite faction....

The major factions aren't opposite factions.

What I don't get is, how can one be King in an Empire?

Plenty of kingdoms have been vassal states to empires.

since you aren't actually allied in any way, shape or form.

I've been simultaneously allied with the major factions in most relevant ways, shapes, and forms.

My trade, exploration data, and culling of undesirable elements is in high demand with all of them.

Don't hang out with them both at the same time.

I'm rarely in Imperial, Federation, and Alliance territory simultaneously.
