FDev does not share this view - they seem to want ED to be the same, no matter the mode you play so each player to be able to affect the galaxy in the same way and play by the same rules.
Not sure if that was their motivation for designing the game in this way. Given past experience, I suspect it came down to meeting a demand with a minimum of time and resources.
If you see discussion of topics with a bunch of people with a common interest, polite manner, and decent intellect as a waste of time, then yes.
If it brings people no closer to the stated aim, then absolutely. Remember, this thread is supposedly about encouraging players to put themselves into dangerous PvP scenarios, even when they don't have to, not a ganker circle jerk on how somehow players would for no apparent reason choose to become gank-bait while gankers could continue ganking with impunity without making the slightest sacrifice for this common goal.
To begin with there appears to a complete disconnect between PvP players and non-PvP players. PvP players need open because they want to conduct PvP with total strangers. Non-PvP players have no such need and their social needs are already met by private groups. This is a point that simply does not appear to compute with PvP players here.
Secondly, non-PvP players are going to principally trading and exploring. Given ED's load-out and ship model, this means that precious modules that could be devoted to cargo or even left empty (for greater jump distance) would have to be devoted to defense (let alone offense, because that's simply a non-starter for any hauler of exploration ship faced with a loaded FDL). And this would add to the grind for them, which isn't going to be very encouraging.
Yet none of these people with a common interest or polite manner, you speak of, have offered any suggestion that is even vaguely on topic, instead suggesting utterly colour-blind and self serving suggestions designed only to fulfill their PvP game play aspirations. Given the supposed purpose of this thread, most would call it a complete waste of time and bandwidth. Why don't you have the same discussion but call it
"wouldn't it be nice if we have a constant flow of care bears in open to pew-pew?" At least then it would be on topic.
