Newcomer / Intro How did you guys learn Elite Dangerous?

Is it confirmed that Deadlies and Elites ALWAYS have weapons mods, though? I think that they always have SOME mods, but not necessarily weapons.

No it is not always weapons, just that now they can be weapons. They removed all the weapons mods after SJA's minions had their SkyNet revolt and they never announced that the weapon mods were re-introduced (sneaky) that's why we got support to clarify the position. Left me eating humble pie as I had gone on the dev's pronouncement that some mods will remain but that they will not be combat-oriented. I lost count of the number of times I pontificated that "they have no modded weapons" and then I had to make a grovelling apology. [mad]

Well, me, too, of course. Devs somewhat forgot to mention it when they enabled them, again.

Yeah - oh and my apologies I should have written "As you know..." at the start of the "They removed all..." sentence since I was writing as a reply to a quote. I blame Coaster-deprivation for my egregious calumny. ;)

You could not be more wrong, Elite is far from done.

Frontier decided to get a base game out of the door instead of trying to launch feature complete, a base game that would be added to over several years until they reached the game they had planned from the start. Had they taken the same route as SC, they would likely be in the same boat, still under development and taking similar levels of flak from folks who know no better complaining it is all taking too long.

I direct you to https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=36. You may want to take a gander at what has been planned for ED from day one.

Did you not notice the "done" as in there is a released game right now available.

Goodness people are touchy.

Hmm, interesting.

But it's only top rank NPCs, anyway, so I don't think that would be Merlin's case.

I run into Masters and Elites quite a bit. Mostly Masters. I've only seen Elites flying Vultures. And those... I don't even try. Just boost like hell and complete my mission.

Those are big ol' nopes for me.

I'm subscribed to the SC update emails.

No, I'm not going to spend $1,000 on a ship pack. Thanks for asking.

I hope it comes together - it certainly looks the part, and of course the Star Citizen universe needs more communism, but like this game, I'm only going to drop cash on it when it gets an official 1.0 production release.

You do realize you can spend 45 bucks on the game and still play right?

No one is forcing anyone to buy anything else.

Just like Frontier isn't forcing anyone to buy paint, hull add-ons or name plates so you can custom name your ships...

Ah well -- that is going to take a hit when the beta 2.3 (episode 1) download finishes. :)

Heh, yes, mine just finished, actually. :)

What I'm more worried about is ME:Andromeda on 16th (two weeks from now) which will kind of disrupt the betas and the whole start of the 2.3. :/

(Not that I'm complaining!)

I'm still rather leery about ME:Andromeda.

I loved all three of the ME's, even with the ending of the 3rd, but something feels... well off... with Andromeda.

Without going too far off topic, and because there are a LOT of very touchy folks here about Star Citizen.

I enjoy them both. Elite is more of a drop in and run a few missions. Its a decent game.

Star Citizen is something every time I log into it, I find something incredibly new and interesting. Usually a ship model, or getting into a gun fight because someone wants my ship.

Two different flavours of game in the space sim world.

Elite is current "done". Star Citizen, far from it.

But overall Star Citizen is much more reaching than Elite currently is. Elite has FAR more to explore, but Star Citizen packs in (even currently in its early Alpha) far far more detail in those small areas it does have than Elite does.

The open ended game play of Elite does not inspire me. Its seriously all grind. To get a promotion in the Fed Navy or such. To get that next level in Exploration, trade or combat. Its FINE, its mostly fun, but its still a grind.

I don't much worry about that in Star Citizen, and if it keeps going the way it does currently, I never will because I can just do exactly what I want, when I want, and the level of detail in game is just mind blowing.

I understand there are a lot of very touchy folks here about Star Citizen. Just one remaining question. I find ED quite difficult. Is Star Citizen easier, particularly when it comes to telling you what to do and how to do it, and with respect to the procedural aspects.

Greetings commanders,

Well it's been almost a full year since I've started in Elite Dangerous. I remember playing Elite back in the 80's with my father
and after seeing the Game play for ED on Twitch I just had to give it a shot. Granted there's a steep learning curve being
a space flight sim with all kinds of controls, I chose the sink or swim route, did the training missions once then just dove
right in. Been hooked ever since. Keep up the Great work F-Dev

Of course I do. And of course, the second part of my sentence still applies. It's the disconnect that bothers me - between a game in alpha (2.6.2 now, isn't it?), seriously overdue with large project creep and... asking for thousands of dollars from people with minimal investment in the game. Given those conditions, I'll keep my money until there's a full 1.0 retail release.

I'm not saying it's vapourware, or a scam, or any of the other things that people have said about it. I am, however, sceptical. I have many other games vying for my attention and many other things competing for access to my wallet.

The so called "project creep" was rather well know, because the backers paid to keep letting it creep.

No one is asking for 1000 bucks. There are options if you wish to spend that. Its just like buying a Mustang. No one is making you get the GT350. If you want to, go right ahead.

I'm skeptical too, and I've backed Star Citizen just like I did Elite Dangerous.

Star Citizen, right now, is easier per say.

Because there isn't a tonne to do. Yes, you have to manage your shields, and power use, but thats not that hard to do. Especially in the Alpha single seat ships are more or less point and shoot. FOR NOW.

Multi-crew ships are still easy too, for now, but once they start adding in more and more like Engineering, Weapons Systems, ect, things will get complicated very fast unless you have a decent crew.

Elite takes time to play properly. For sure. And its only going to get more complicated as multi-crew gets added shortly
Star Citizen takes time to play properly, and with the FPS options, it can be a bit more daunting. And its only going to get more complicated as mining, farming, repair, building, exploration, and ship management, including multi-crew goes deeper.

Whether or not the project creep is well-known is beside the point - it's usually a bad thing in terms of getting a project out on time and to specifications. It adds complexity to the base project that can lead to the need for redesigns of basic components, which we've seen with SC. They're working to a moving target.

And good for you for backing it. I'll be happy to spend my money on a 1.0 retail release when it gets there.

I learned the hard way. Jumped straight in and played the tutorials before PB went live. Then I jumped straight in and died. A lot. Hell of a learning curve (which was quite refreshing for a game TBH), and that's how I improved along with sterling help from the Alpha community.

Fly safe commander! :)

Played a whole bunch with friends as many others have. Also died a lot to anything from simple docking to just constant interdictions when with friends.

It's a shame there aren't more written guides these days. Video tutorials aren't my cup of tea.

Have you actually READ that forum section? That's not about Star Citizen. Its about hating on Star Citizen and stroking Derek Smart's ego.

Oh is it? I have not read all 2475 pages of the current (V5) S C thread, I have peeked in at a couple of linked posts from elsewhere over time.

Shame then really, an intelligent appraisal of developments etc would have been welcome. I don't do S C or Eve etc and NMS lasted a week. ;)
