Horizons How do I get some rank.

G'day all,
been trading and am allied to the Federation, for a while and am at 100 % as a merchant, but have no rank.

Q1. How do I get rank as I want to purchase a federal Drop ship, but need to be a midshipman?

Hi!
You are raising your ranks by doing missions for federation factions (The ones with Fed logo next to them)
As you noticed it has a separate progress bar.
Once you get a 100% of your current (nonexistent :D ) rank, you will eventually find a Navy ascension mission. Once you do that, you'll receive a rank.

Rinse and repeat.

Yeah better do Imperium for Clipper and Cutter.
For getting ranks, before engineers sharity missions worked best. Not sure if that still is the case. However was doin quite some long range "shipping" missons for Fed, they gave me only 1% at rear admiral. Payout on em where around 30 mil ( only the fed ones ).

G'day all,
thankyou for your comments.

I have found a nice little system that has a productive data run within 1 jump of each other, every now and again it produces a 400ly run that pays a couple of million cr,
I have now made it to cadet and have received a signal that says I have received a promotion to petty officer.

D.C. CERBERUS; I wanted a FDS for trading as it has a high boost speed and can get me out of interdiction's, as well as can take on a bit of cargo, at the moment the Diamondback explorer is doing the job and has got me out of several interdiction's because of it's high boost.

But, I am open to suggestions......

Well, I have never owned the FDS, only the FAS and clearly for a different purpose to the one you intend.....however....judging by what I have read I think you might consider a Type 6 which you can fully A rate (check coriolis.io) and which can boost @ 365m/s and maybe more - certainly faster out of the box than the FDS. Not much in the way of teeth but it sounds like you want to break the interdictions and be on your way.
I actually own one which I purchased and A rated solely for the period when mission cargo destinations were changing mid mission and I need to change over from a Large landing pad to Medium. I think they have fixed this because I have never used it. However, if you go to the Ships section on this forum you will see plenty of praise for it....and its brother, the Keelback.
Alternatively.....you can opt straight for IMO one of the best ships in the game - AspX. You can A rate it for circa 20-24M Cr but it will serve you perfectly well at D Rate on some modules too. A rated speed gets you 394m/s. Jump range can sit around 25Ly Laden, 30 odd unladen.

Both of the above will be cheaper than your FDS and IMO will serve you better.....

Edit: Plus if your nice little system is the Ceos/ Sothis run (if it isn't then this is another identical one), you will surely welcome the jump range of that Asp over the FDS when doing the 400ly runs.......! Play on Coriolis between the 2 - I cannot get that FDS fully lightened to much over 15ly laden. The additional number of jumps you will have to make in the FDS will have a significant hit on your Cr/hour plus of course increase your interdiction chances by a fair amount too

Edit: PS: The Cr numbers I quoted assume a purchase and fitting in a LYR system for the 12-15% discount on ship and modules. Use Inara.CZ site to check your nearest discount system

i can only echo what is already said.

From what you have said for now get the asp explorer. That is not to say do not continue to rank up with the feds, but just that you should not let waiting for the fed promotion to hold you back.

funnily enough i too in my playthrough 2.0 am saving for the FDS, however this is only because i am trying all the ships i missed out on 1st time around. waiting to get your Fed rep is inefficient because you can be earning more money whilst STILL ranking with the feds by using the asp.

once you get to 100% in the fed ranking you need to keep an eye on the mission rewards. the naval ascention missions are not as oobvious as they used to be, and indeed i was at 100% for quite some time waiting for one to come through before realising they were already there!. DOH!.

so long as you keep taking the Fed missions your rank will go up. the ++ missions will give you more rep than the + missions but in 1 session last night i went up 5% in my lieutenant rank. This was just by doing my own thing and not out and out going for Fed ranking

G'day all.
CD CERBERUS, thankyou for your well written comments. I will purchase the Asp Explorer on my next run to the big smoke and kit it out, the better jump range will defiantly be an advantage and will boost my cr/per hour.

You won't regret your decision. She's a beaut to fly too.
Couple of final points now you have come to a conclusion:
1) You may need to visit a couple of (nearby) LYR systems in order to get the exact modules you require @ the 15% discount. Again, Inara.cz will help you here - although once you are in his exploited systems it will be a jump or two maximum to fully get it done
2) Mines are generally considered, at the moment anyway, to be excellent for use in getting on your way after a interdiction. Note that you should place these on the 4 Lower (small) hardpoints to ensure that you don't detonate on your own ship. I can tell you that doing so works in almost an OP fashion, but most importantly, breaks the interdiction cycle to a certain extent even if you don't kill them. The "top" mounted medium Hardpoints I leave to you.
3) Put your Point defence on at least 1 of the rearward utility mounts. If you favour the "run at them" method of High waking, then plop one on the top centre front too just in case - you are never going to shield tank this baby so don't bother with too many boosters. It is also a fairly large target so I don't find chaff overly useful either. Use speed and agility to evade.
4) I run a 5A fuel scoop on mine: this is probably overkill, and you can certainly get away with a class 3.
5) Get an ADS. Might as well make creds on all those long cargo runs. I have one on (almost) every single one of my ships and you rack up a million or so even in the bubble travelling from A to B
6) Get the gold paint job. Looks awesome!

Sit back in the chair, pop a cold one and bask in the fact that you have a ship that will probably never leave your stable. If it does, I bet you go back and purchase it again at some point. It really is that good. (mental note to self....hope FD doesn't nerf it.....)

They say Superpower bounties are the way now. Doing the occasional mission here and there did nothing to improve my standing. And you have to grind it fast apparently because it decays like soft cheese in the sun.

G'day all,
thankyou all.
CD CERBERUS appricate your detailed suggestion, I will try the Asp Ex on my next run to the big smoke, the additional cargo space will certainly bring up my cr/hr rate,

You are confusing reputation with rank. Rank does not decay and is only gained by doing missions.
