How do you stop players from simply blowing up other players for the hell of it?

Within the context of the game, it is a form of bullying. Someone who pops someone's ship for no apparent reason, is a bully. A pirate is a bully: "give me your cargo or else". The definition of bully is "a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker". It's perfectly allowed within ED because space is a dangerous place. And popping someone for no reason is within the "rules" - since you seem to focus a lot on rules. This is why I said what I said to the OP. Perhaps I hit a chord with you, but you do seem to be taking the usage of the word "bully" a bit personally...
The "within the context of the game" is the key part. A pirate is doing what he does within the context of the game. A bully or griefer is not. There are no spoken rules but popping someone for no reason isn't within any rules that most decent people would accept. We're talking about the type of player who wouldn't have a problem with hacking someone else's account if they were able to, it was easy enough, and they thought that they could get away with it. They're just out to find ways to annoy people.

You don't ever want to stop it. You want emergent gameplay that proves a risk/reward system when you do this beyond merely a bounty system

No, we're not. I will blow you up simply because I can. It's allowed within the game, therefore I will do it. I don't do it to ruin your experience, and I have absolutely no requirement to explain myself to you or anyone I shoot at. I would not hack your account just to give you a bad day, because it's not just illegal, but against the rules. You are making hasty generalisations about people you know nothing about. That literally makes you less precious than the crap I pick from between my toes.

Why don't you fight back or try to run away? Players looking for a fight maybe just want a human challenge, because sometimes you don't meet someone for days..
I'm in a cobra and interdicted another cobra yesterday, I just wanted to fight for fun. I shot him a few times and he asked me please to stop instead of fighting back or trying to escape. I did leave him alone
but I kind of wish he tried to kill me. Play solo mode if you don't want player challenges no?

Honorable? no...
Griefing? well, if he follows you consistently kills you over and over... otherwise it's just someone roleplaying as an assassin. Because technically a pirate is after your booty and not your life.

Role-playing my hairy butt. In every game that allows PvP there's always a groups of dingle-berries that has to pee in everyone else's punch bowl. They're called bullies and there are more of them on-line than anywhere else because, in real life, they'd get stomped for their trouble.

maybe it's because that word has been used a lot on these forums as a way to link PvPers to anti-social behaviour. maybe i'm reading the wrong thing into your words then

i do take this topic personally as i spent a few years in eve out in null sec and low sec and i know the PvPers to be a friendly bunch of people who take delight in blowing stuff up, but not in upsetting people. some of the best fights you can have in PvP are when both sides want to chat about it after. that to me is the difference between a PvPer and a griefer. these forums are filled with people who think PvP (with the exception of those properly playing a pirate roll) are automatically trying to upset people.

i think that is a very unfair assumption to make. however i'm not sure it is an assumption you are making.

We got a badass over here.

does getting blown up by a bigger tank in world of tanks count as being bullied? does getting shot by a player with a better aim in call of duty count as being bullied?

does getting killed by any player in a game that is open to PvP count as being bullied?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't those other games exist for the SOLE REASON of PvP combat and nothing else besides?
.
I haven't played them myself, but I'm pretty sure that is the basic raison-d'etre behind them, and the exact reason I have no interest in them.
.
And then there's this game named Elite. Elite is SO much more than simple combat. *So much more*. Even the original Elite was so much more than combat, despite only having one real in game incentive to keep moving forwards - gain to gain "Elite" combat status.
.
But the new Elite moves the game on even further. There are now three, yes *three* ratings to work on. FDev have placed a real life reward on all three - an equal reward on all three.
.
Elite is not simply about space combat and PvP thrills.
.
My take on all this is that many players - particularly players of multiplayer online games - simply *expect*an online game to revolve around PvP and combat. Elite is simply not *that* game. Elite is SO so much more than that.
.
Stop trying to squeeze a niche game into a mould that it simply doesn't fit.
.
True enough, there is a large combat element to E: D, but that is not the be-all-and-end-all like so many other threads try to make it. (Witness the daily, sometimes hourly new threads "I am a predator, where are all my prey"; "Man up and play open"; etc, etc...)
.
Until all the EVE, CoD, Tanks players get their heads around the fact that E: D is a game that isn't exactly in the mould of others, and isn't exactly as they expect it to be, we will continue to see threads like this one and all those I highlighted in the previous paragraph.
.
For the record, I play solo since it is the only way I want to experience this game. Offline would've been better so I don't keep failing missions due to game timer counting down while *my* game isn't running, Sheesh.

PS - Elite is *so much more* than PvP.

If we assume its one of those people, the type that is just out to annoy you, then sure. But Im fairly sure thats only a small percentage, given the general maturity of those who have the patience to sit down and learn to play ED. So even with that small percentage I personally try not to let it bother me. I also would note who did it and put a contract their head - if mechanics allowed for it :) Lets not forget that this game is multi national, so we cant assume that everyone who doesnt respond is the "out to annoy you" type. They may not speak English and not want to bother typing something you wont understand....

See, this is the problem with your types. Lacking any apparent reason that you can make out, you assume the player is attacking for the sole purpose of ruining your day. It's easy to lash out and make assumptions about your assailant, it's easy to hate them and it's easy to feign disrespect and call them names, but what you're gonna have to realise is that the people doing it aren't really looking for your respect, don't consider you qualified enough to judge their psychological state, and really do just enjoy your tears. Whine about it all you want on the forums, but until you start shooting back, you're not solving anything.

This may not be an explicitly PVP game, but it does have PVP, and another player attacking you for no reason apparent to you is perfectly acceptable and wholly within the spirit of the game. If it wasn't, Frontier would not simply code the game so as to have our weapons simply not fire when pointed at another player. Other methods are available as well - in the event of a player attacking another player, the attacker can be automatically disconnected or re-instanced. The fact that none of those things, amongst other solutions, are part of the mechanics means it can be done, and if it can be done, it will be done.
Dear oh dear, talk about missing the point entirely. Did you read what I said? Did you see the bits where there are plenty of entirely legitimate reasons for attacking other players? Are you unable to grasp the idea that just because something isn't specifically banned or prevented doesn't make it acceptable? I never said anything about making assumptions at all about why someone is attacking me.

If they really do enjoy tears though (I've not got any, the fact that you seem to think so after drawing all sorts of ludicrous conclusions speaks volumes) says all that needs to be said about such people.

The guy who enjoys making your day worse exists. Fact.

I'm not talking about the guy who's ready for a bit of one-on-one at high noon. I'm talking about the guy who will do anything to make your day worse and get away with it. The guy who is ready to cheat, hack and shoot you in the back as much as he can, and brag about it later. He will use every trick - in the book or not, in order to stack the odds in his own favour. He exists, in droves. Just look at DayZ as the perfect example of how it works - or doesn't, whichever way you want to look at it.

Unchecked, they will eventually drag the whole community down, because everyone will be mentally prepared that the next person they meet might be this guy. Things will devolve into a "shoot first, ask questions never" kind of mentality. Most people won't like it, but that guy will argue that; "Hey. If you can't take the heat, you should stay out of my kitchen".

Be prepared for it. On some level, it will happen. There will be exploits, cheating, lies and hacking. That guy will be there.

Fit mine launchers and just boost in a straight line until you can jump. They either fly through the mines and take damage/explode, or fly round them and create even more of a gap to you. Making it near impossible to catch up, simply physics :)

Sure, that's fair enough. Whether I can tell the reason though is beside the point, if I misunderstand what someone is it doesn't change what they really are.

I find solo and open play pretty poor implementation of PvE / PvP concept... If solo impacts everything in the game except PvP, it’s a bit pointless. Probably most of those who hit solo... want to play solo only because of the risk (except for docking issues etc). If the risk is the issue - it would be good to find a better solution. I think it would benefit the game to have a bit more people in the open play... so the space isn’t that much empty.
I try to play open myself even though I often fly T6 full of Palladium. If I had lost it I would have been very...(!!!) But on the other hand the existence of the risk and necessity to avoid threat makes the game more interesting. Still... FD should look for some other solutions for traders... i.e. cargo insurance etc...

I saw what you perceive as entirely legitimate reasons for attacking other players. I then saw you exclude things as 'griefing' as if you're some kind of rule-maker for the game. Don't care what you consider acceptable, I only care what the rules say is acceptable. Deal with it.

Of course they exist. But assuming it's everyone who attacks you for no apparent reason is irrational.

Killing a clean status target whether npc or pc will not add to their combat rating

The far I know, that's the case, although a bit hazy - in anarchy systems everyone seems to show clean regardless whether they are or aren't (so w/o KWS you can't really be sure there).

and they just nuke you anyway, thats just griefing, surely?

Nope.

That's allowed behaviour .. no one said you had to leave you alone post ejecting cargo : it should be there, was talked about in the DDF, but FD have not (again!) implemented it yet so what you see is what you get.

Repeatedly blowing you up isn't necessarily griefing either - depends on circumstances. (If you enter Anarchy system and I kill you, then you return 10 times to same system and I keep killing you, is that griefing or pilot stupidity ? ;))

If the people who do the pirate role do this as a pirate would do instead of a murderer, I would happily come back in Open. Sadly, I encountered to many non-pirate-pirates who destroyed my ships without any purpose (first shoot, then ask questions), I moved to a group where such behaviour is restricted. Playing a pirate for profit is fine and would add some excitement for me as a trader, but I fear a minority has spoiled the fun for me to play with those people. Sorry.

If such murdering behaviour is "discouraged" we'll see what happens.

The combat in this game is amazing, one of the best flight/shooters simulation out there. I want to test my skills against other players. When a player attacks you sometimes it's not griefing, it's to have some fun playing a part of the game with you.
Every time I'm supercruising I pray that someone interdicts me so we can duel, else you fight mindless ai nonstop and that's not very fun. If you never want the fear of being jumped just play solo. And what is this about people who attack others in game
being crazy in real life, having no life etc? You can't possibly think that because some love to pvp, even if without your consent, they have issues? - If that is the way you are why do you play in open, kind of ironic that you don't want to get attacked by players but you allow it? You have the possibility to avoid combat with real people without any problem.
