I don't think Chris Roberts had anything to do with the mouse input for Freelancer. That was a decision made after he sold the company, and he didn't like it much either.

vision and imagination doesn't write the paychecks for your game developers
It has to be pointed out that ED are using procedural generation for their galaxy, which should require fewer man hours of content creation and testing than manually creating 100+ star systems.
procedural generation doesn't work all by itself you know
handmade tiles will take their time.
or do you think the spaceports all generate automatically and look totally awesome by pushing the "generate awesome looking spaceport button".
not even starting to think about the planets with vegetation and crawling with animals
I'm so glad that awful abomination of mouse mode for space sims makes it into both ED and SC. So happy, really. Can't wait for people pointing at me and my HOTAS with their precision FPS mouses and their gamer keyboards. That's going to be super balanced in multiplayer, can't wait.
Everyone will be happy, yay!
It's already been said that keyboard & mouse controls will be a lesser experience than using a gamepad or, even better, a HOTAS setup. The mouse control is nothing like how Freelancer worked. So rejoice! Except you've made it pretty obvious you've got no intention of being positive about anything...
Yeah it's not an FPS, trying to line up your gun sights with a mouse isn't anything like doing so in a typical FPS game. I mean we could have made it so your guns track where your mouse is and shoots towards that but then we would have a balance problem on our hands so we didn't. Plus this game incentiveses pitching and rolling not yaw so even if they do use a mouse to aim their ships it's going to slow going for them if they expect it to work like a FPS. Much better to roll and then pitch to turn for example.
Welcome on board. You know it makes sense.
You might want to catch up on the newsletters, the dev diaries and the archive DDF proposals. There is a tonne of stuff to read up about and very soon they'll be Alpha going on which will be all over the internet too.
Dont forget to watch the Capital Ship Video.. that will really blow you away if you haven't seen it already.
I've never been greatly impressed with the pitch of Star Citizen and didn't back it - I really question what is going on with that project and how its subsequently been marketed. When it comes to this genre I consider the ultimate of sandbox space/sandbox to have no equal other than David Braben's Elite.
We'll see how it goes but my money (quite literally) is on Elite Dangerous.![]()
I think one of the bigger problems with people going crazy on 'limited ships' in SC is they're going to start the game with every ship they could ever want and find they have no reason to spend time earning their 'dream ships' in game.
Everyone is different but a big part of the fun for me with Elite and other space sims was building my way up until being able to afford ships like the Anaconda and Panther.
Starting the game on day 1 with every type of ship you could ever need for any purpose seems odd.
Well it looks like Star Citizen isn't going to meet its alpha release date - called the 'dogfighting module' - which to me is being slightly cheeky to start with as its not an alpa of the wider universe but of a locked piece of space to bug test ship to ship combat.
Well, the Elite Alpha will basically be the same thing. It's going to be a locked of piece of space where ship to ship combat can be tested in a bunch of different scenarios. At least in the beginning.
However, I do think that their roll out of new things to test is going to be rather aggressive.
Didn't realise it was mostly just dogfighting.
Ah that is interesting to know, I wasn't aware of that.
The most I'd seen was alpha would segmented to test specific things at specific times (dog fighting being one of the obvious ones). Didn't realise it was mostly just dogfighting.

I don't KNOW if it's mostly dogfighting, but it's the only thing they have mentioned so far. As I said before. I do expect more things to be tested rather quickly (since beta still is planned for January), but they haven't said what and when.
There is a good reason why the flight mechanic is being tested first in both ED and SC though. You really need to nail that aspect of the game before anything else since that is something you are going to be exposed to constantly while playing.
one will get made and be exactly what we expect it to be.
the other is hype-ware & will not be anything like people expect it to be.
