how does start citizen stack up to elite?

It's very beta at the moment. It's more arcade-y than elite. Its graphics are nice but I wish it would run more than 20fps on my system.

Should be pretty fun when finished but you're not really missing anything right now.

That last time I had it installed on my computer all you could do was walk around in a hangar and fly around inside a little box shooting larger and larger waves of enemies. If you flew too far you would hit an invisible wall and crash and die.

They hadn't gotten the space trading and exploring and flying to other systems working yet. The game is still in pre-Alpha so it's to be expected.

I'm thinking of pledging, but the really cool looking packages are insane ($15,000??) . how does that stack up to the funding for ED?
According to a few websites, apparently SC is the most successful crowdfunding project, ever.

Yes - but you can play ED right now, SC seems to be Coming Soon™....

Z...

if they are doing what they say they are and they are holding back to make the game ready for launch then i feel it will give ED a big run for its money in content

the previews look stunning.. and all are apparently generated with their engine. I may pledge a bit and get a decent starter package. Not $15,000 though :)

Combat seem more realistic without the nerfed yaw of E: D, graphics seem to be better (only release will tell), it got a single player campaign (which is the reason I pledged) which will give you a pension of sorts to buy your starter ship for the persistent universe (of course you can skip this if you pledged for a starter PU ships). No idea on trading & PU missions. Galaxy is curated so should be more "gamey" but less "sterile".

All in all it's a different enough game from E: D, but I suspect I might enjoy that as much as (if not more than) E: D.

I am a cheapo as ever and only pledged USD 30 when they discounted the Aurora MR Anniversary pack + LX upgrade.

I heard that they got something like $60 million funding, I don't think elite got anything near that. Although we all know that more funding != better game. Chris Roberts, the creator, made the Wing Commander series though, so there's a pedigree there which should mean it is a good game eventually.

I was going to back it for the smallest amount and when it comes out just earn my ships the normal way like I do in Elite.

I'm playing on a free key at the moment which given out for PAX and I can PM it to you if you like, 20gb download but.

What Chubbybunneh said above is true, there's a beta/demo of sorts where you fight waves of enemies in your ship and you can also run around the hangar in first-person mode. Non-optimised performance makes it really chuggy on my system with low FPS.

Anyway this thread is a bit off-topic now, so it might end up getting moved or closed.

Nobody knows - it doesn't exist !
I will be trying it when it actually does exist though
And that No Man's Sky one too

The game will be released in 2016, why are you asking about it so early?
wondering if I should pledge.

what ship did package did you get? I'm thinking of getting the constellation Taurus pacakage ... I like the idea of having a massive ship you can walk around in, with a crew of three...

Been playing SC for long while and it is still too early to say anything about it. The FPS part of it will be released soon and some other features will be released this year as well. Up to now Robert has stay true to his word about releases. ED its a great game and even though has been a full release it still needs more features. I really like both so far and both have great things coming to them. Play both, have fun in both. These two games are welcome to the Space game player community knowing that the other space shooters out there do not really have what we really want. I am looking forward to SC release and already have purchased a package and two small ships. I am also invested in ED because I see that it has a great future and FD have been delivering nice goodies as of lately. I hope it stays this way.

we'll see won't we.

I jumped into ED quickly and i can jump out just as quickly. It's the most stunning space sim I've played but I'm not going to be loyal to a game that's inferior to another game that is basically its direct competition. So we'll see how SC is in 2016 and how much more has been added to ED by then.

The trial key has the basic Anvil Hornet F7C training ship but I'm thinking of backing the Mustang because it looks like more of a fighter than the Aurora.

Disclaimer: I am a backer

What I'd do is wait 'till it comes out and read a few of the independent reviews of it. Then look at some screenshots and watch a few gameplay videos on youtube and if it looks like your kind of game, rock on!!! (That's what I do with pretty much every game)

It's a massively ambitious project; if they can pull it off it will be amazing. It's also a very risky project so be wary.

It's a long way off from fruition, I don't expect to see it released this side on 2017 (Well apart from Squadron 42 first episode, they may hit in 2016).

According to their website Star Citizen has raised $75M of crowdfunding, which is certainly a lot.
You don't have to spend silly amounts of money - I'm a "Veteran Backer" and I paid $65 in 2013 for a package that gave me the same ship as this package, which is currently available for $78.
What has been released so far to backers is still effectively just a tech demo. The "Squadron 42" single-player storyline is expected to be released before the end of 2015. The multiplayer open world some time in 2016 (maybe). By then I imagine it will be competing with "Elite: Deadly" rather than "Elite: Dangerous".

tl/dr: Looks very nice, but don't hold your breath.

This is what I'm doing, Star Citizen has plenty of funding already, so I'm taking a wait and see approach.

I was a big Wing Commander and Privateer fan back in the day. I hope it turns our spectacularly though, especially for the sake of the backers.

We can't have to many good space games to play.
