How I got Horizons "working" with dk2, 8.0 runtime, and windows 7 64bit

First off I made the custom resolution of 1280x768 @ 75hz w/GTF timing which can be found here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=215305 . Then set it as my desktop resolution. After setting all that up I simply ran the game (stand alone launcher, but I'm sure the steam launcher would work the same) and made sure the resolution/refresh rate matched the custom desktop resolution/refresh rate I made earlier. From there I'm sure you can adjust your graphics options to accommodate a smooth frame rate.

Thanks to Susscon for the tips.

Previously the only way for me to get Horizons to work in VR (smoothly) was to use oculus runtime 0.5.0.1 in extended mode. I tried MANY things prior to this to get Horizons working as it should with oculus runtime 8.0 with no luck. It seems my specific issue, and possibly others as well, is related to the desktop resolution. Hopefully this will be addressed soon. (a little side note: 1280x768 sounds like it would yield a low quality image but the game "looked" just as sharp to me as 1920x1080 in 0.5.0.1 extended mode does. I think steamvr/ovr which seems to be the software that is allowing dk2 users to use direct mode in Horizons handles HMD resolutions differently than say a game that would directly access the dk2 through it's runtime)

Unfortunately even though this work around seems to be a step in the right direction there's still the issue of poor performance near or on planets, as well as in some asteroid belts. I feel like I get the same performance and possibly a slight increase (not by much) when using oculus runtime 0.5.0.1 in exteneded mode. I won't pretend like I know how their engine works, but I will say that when i'm in the middle of nowhere in my SRV, far from any settlements, that the frame rate is very poor. As soon as I look up or away from the planet surface and it's out of my FOV the frame rate skyrockets and all is smooth. THE only time I'm able to get a smooth frame rate is when i set everything to low and turn down the HMD quality ALL the way which seems like an unacceptable way to play.

My system is older, this I realize, but it's no slouch by any stretch. I'm running a I7 920 @ 3.8ghz, 780ti w/3gb of vram, and 12gb of system ram on windows 7 64bit with the latest nvidia drivers. I'm definitely looking into building a newer system made for VR, but I also hope that VR specific optimizations can be made to Horizons before then. I feel like it's within the realm of possibility, and appreciate all Frontier have done so far.

I hope this helps some of you.

Isn't there a whole multi page thread about this already (in fact several)? Did we really need another one....

EDIT: Wow - it's worse than I thought, this whole sub forum is a right mess, from just a quick look:

6 thread saying how good is 0.8 but you still told me in my thread that 0.5 is the only "official" support for elite... wich is not what i asked.
Maybe respond button is not working properly too.

Amazing eh - and out of those 6 threads you couldn't search or ask your question in one of them....

This sub forum is mess due to countless threads like yours and this one because you are A) too lazy to look for information yourself and want it handed to you on a plate or B) too lazy to test both methods yourself and see which works best for you. Both have a recurring theme - That would be "Laziness" in case you are to lazy to figure it out for yourself....

EDIT: Oh, it looks like my "Respond" button is working just fine.

Reccuring theme does not mean that my awnser is in these threads. Did you see the awnser on these threads? I don't think so.

Did I see a post which stated "Hey - Cylon, configuration X will work best on your machine and make you irresistible to the opposite sex" then no I didn't and I wouldn't have expected to. I did however read about the countless experiences the people in those threads submitted. Was that not enough for you to base a decision on? Could you not be bothered to test both configurations and make your own mind up?

I understand what you're getting at but this was aimed at windows 7 users, hence the "windows 7 64bit' in the title, since I've only seen posts regarding windows 10 workarounds. It would also be helpful if posts were made regarding progress in dk2 compatibility issues with horizons instead of wasting peoples time posting irrelevant information.

Thank you!
I have been racking my brains trying to get horizons to run with 0.8. It was a juddery mess for me using the other recommendations, but using 1280x768 @ 75Hz was the key! You are right, it doesn't look like the resolution is any lower.
I don't know why it doesn't work at 1920x1080 @ 75 Hz - it makes no sense.

good to hear this worked for you! With oculus runtime 1.0 on the way I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see better compatibility across various system configurations.
