How many VR users are there in Elite Dangerous?

Indeed you just hit on the only problem for VR for me. IF it fails (I don't think it will this time but this is not the 1st generation of consumer VR)
Bit IF it did fail then I am done with the entire racing and flight sim genre. For me at least one you go VR there is no going back. I bought drive club for PS4 (none vr) and I just can't play it. It means I no longer buy the Forza games (and I loved the 1st 4 plus horizons on Xbox 360) and I will likely never buy another codies game again after they dropped vr support following the great dirt rally.

Thankfully a big if, but I feel the same.

I dunno... if VR fails again, I'll just spend more time with the other ways I entertain myself. A good book or movie, this or that personal project/hobby, a hike or bike ride, a museum or concert, time with family/friends... the choices are virtually infinite. ;)

PC WMR player here, with HOTASAS. (dual T16000's and TFCS)

Haven't quite gotten to the simpit thing yet, but eventually I may. Been holding off to see what Frontier's "priorities" are for this game in the coming months, as I may end up putting it off until "something else" comes along. If it's more of the same, then ED will likely go to the bottom of my games pile. (over 500 and still collecting...) Been thinking of putting some more serious money into a dual Virpil Constellation setup, but I'm not going to go "all out" on this game if they're not willing to put some serious effort into depth to match the 1:1 scale scope.

VR implementation in ED is quite fascinating... a few things need serious improvement (gal map/on-screen keyboard of some sort) but overall it's a much more gratifying experience than flat-pancake view. My only wish is developers actually had more games with the option of VR out there... not necessarily just room-scale.

I looked at Skyrim, Doom and Fallout 4 VR, but not too keen on the only using controllers thing- I'd prefer my mouse/keyboard for those, as I do with most FPS games. (never been fond of controllers, which is why I avoid consoles)

Using the WMR hand tracking controllers is a great way to play VR games - think of it this way, you already use a HOTAS, which effectively simulate what your hands are doing in the game as well (as opposed to a mouse and keyboard). So why wouldn't it make sense to swing your sword and block with your shield in Skyrim?

The point of controllers like the Touch etc is that they are intuitive. Same can’t be said of mouse and keyboard. It’s stupid when people won’t try new things or even acknowledge the potential of new tech. ‘I tried a controller in 1996 and didn’t like it therefore all controllers are bad and I won’t ever own any’!

I agree. It is indeed stupid when people won't try new things or even acknowledge the potential of new tech.

That's why I never said "I won't ever use them because I tried a controller in 1996..."

Not really sure what the point of your comment was, but you might want to re-read my statement. I simply prefer mouse/keyboard over controllers for FPS games.

You may differ, and that's great. Doesn't mean I'm against anyone else using them.

Oculus Rift user as well as pancake...

I'm quite happy to switch between either mode depending on what I intend to do, VR wins on immersion, hands down, but pancake required on the odd occasion I wish to be sociable with the wife/family/dogs...

How DARE you have a personal preference based on what you are comfortable with

nobody calls touch controllers just 'controllers'.

and right off the bat i contest that touch, or even game controllers, are more 'intuitive' than a mouse or a keyboard. how can you possibly say a keyboard is not intuitive? it's a plank full of buttons with labels! it doesn't get more intuitive than that. they're just shouting at you to press them!

what you can do with them is another matter, and that's completely subjective, it depends on cultural factors, on each specific application and on how the particular interface is implemented.

as en exercise: fire up ed in vr, use your touch controllers, see how far you get. yeah, i guess you could use them as a generic 'game controller' split in half, i don't even know.

i've used game controllers quite a bit, have a few of them lying around, still use them occasionally when at friends', and still don't like them. i also use touch and like them a lot (if the app is properly implemented, not always the case), i see a lot of potential in them ... but i just much prefer my keyboard and mouse for most things. for a flight/space sim, nothing beats a joystick/hotas.

you are quick to call others stupid (luddites?) but seem very keen of considering any new thing better and obsoleting anything prior just because it's newer or it's the current fashion. not everyone dives directly into every new fancy just for the sake of it, and just uses what best suits each job and his own preferences.

I wouldn't use them for that because they are rubbish for flight/space sims. Where they shine is in VR FPS which is where kb/mouse are utter rubbish.

+1 znort - I prefer kb+ mouse for FSP's and some RPG's (but then I started with gaming when joysticks were 'new fangled' and rarely interfaced with a computer easily. HOTAS for ED is best for me and touch controllers I love to bits for the games that use them well.

It is good that we all have our own preferences, we'd be boring otherwise!

You did, pretty much 'never been fond of controllers'.

i'm not sure. i do like touch in fps, the experience is very good, but i'm not always inclined to play that way. after the initial rush, i more often just prefer to comfortably sit and manage everything with micro movements of my hands. then again i've been using mouse and keyboards for hours a day for decades, for lots of stuff, and have other means to get exercise, that might have something to do!

You class standing up as exercise? Just incredible!

standing up is exercise. but if you're curious, i practice martial arts almost daily, use my bike or skates as regular transport and do walk quite a lot so yes, when i want to play around with pixels i prefer to sit in a comfy armchair, and have something to drink and smoke in reach.

I could be in the minority 2.8% but I only ever use k/b & mouse for gaming.
to each their own...

Not planning no even trying a FPS with a stock like the ProTube VR then? Yeah, I know, you’ve drawn a red line at controllers. The fun and immersion you’re missing!
